Special Events Special Events Eggs ‘N Beggin’ PET-ACULAR Event The City of Rio Rancho Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Pet Food Gone Wild, and various other rescue groups have come together for a PET-ACULAR event! Have your pet’s picture taken with the Easter Bunny and don’t forget to bring their Easter basket for the Easter Egg Hunt. Dress up your pet in their Easter best and participate in the pet parade and costume contest. Also, come by and check out the adopt-a-thon! There will be many animals from all over the state looking for a best friend to go home with. Detweiler is looking forward to a fun-filled summer. Boredom quickly sets in until T.J. uncovers a scheme to do away with summer vacation! Former principal Dr. Benedict, who once tried to eliminate recess from the school day, now plans to use a laser beam to alter the weather and create permanent winter. It sure would be tough to go to school year-round, so T.J. calls in all his friends for help. June 12: The Lion King (1994) This Disney animated feature follows the adventures of the young lion Simba, the heir of his father, Mufasa. Simba’s wicked uncle, Scar, plots to usurp Mufasa’s throne by luring father and son into a stampede of wildebeests. But Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed. Simba returns as an adult to take back his homeland from Scar with the help of his friends Timon and Pumbaa. June 26: Lady and the Tramp (1955) This Disney animated classic follows a pampered cocker spaniel named Lady whose comfortable life slips away once her owners have a baby. When, after some tense circumstances, Lady finds herself on the loose and out on the street, she is befriended and protected by the tough stray mutt Tramp. A romance begins to blossom between the two dogs, but their many differences, along with more drama at Lady’s household, threaten to keep them apart. July 10: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang While truant from school, young siblings Jeremy and Jemima meet the beautiful Truly Scrumptious, who falls for their widowed father, Caractacus Potts, and his various oddball inventions, including the family’s noisy rebuilt car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. One day at the beach, Caractacus tells Truly and the children a fanciful fable about the villainous Baron Bomburst and his evil designs on the Potts family car. July 24: Christopher Robin Christopher Robin -- now a family man living in London -- receives a surprise visit from his old childhood pal, Winnie-the-Pooh. With Christopher’s help, Pooh embarks on a journey to find his friends -- Tigger, Eeyore, Owl, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga and Roo. Once reunited, the lovable bear and the gang travel to the big city to help Christopher rediscover the joy of life. August 14: Oliver & Company In this animated update of the classic “Oliver Twist” tale, Oliver is an orphaned kitten taken in by a gang of thieving dogs, led by cavalier canine Dodger and owned by down-and-out pickpocket Fagin. While pulling a job in the streets of New York City, Oliver winds up being adopted by a rich girl, Jenny, and landing on easy street. But through a series of events, a loan shark threatens the peaceful new arrangement. Mayor’s Sunday is Funday Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with your family. The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate.

Berkeley, California, June 11, 2019—Youth Musical Theater Company (YMTC) concludes its 13th season with the award-winning musical Parade. It will run July 20–29 at El Cerrito High School Performing Arts Theater. Set in 1913, Parade tells the true story of Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia. Frank is put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker he employed. Already deemed guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, Frank suffered the added consequences of sensationalist news stories and a janitor's false testimony. His only defenders were a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife, who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion. “Parade is a story about one of the most glaring miscarriages of justice in recent American history,” says Director Jennifer Boesing. “It’s also a cautionary tale, a warning against scapegoating, racism, xenophobia, and sensationalism in the media—all issues that we can see playing out in American politics today.” Boesing adds, “Underneath these issues, Parade reveals a deeply human lesson about how love and human connection can be forged, even in a climate of intolerance—a story that needs to be told now more than ever. Theater has the power to change hearts and minds, and the young artists at the heart of YMTC take their role as storytellers very seriously.” The book was written by Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy), and the music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, The Bridges of Madison County).

A. Milne wrote two books about a bear named Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends. The former was called simply Winnie- the-Pooh (WP) and was published in 1926, and the second, The House at Pooh Corner (HPC), was published in 1928. The books contain a collection of stories that the author used to tell to his son before he went to bed in the evening and they came to be counted among the most widely known children‟s stories in literary history. Many consider the books about Winnie-the-Pooh some of the greatest literary works ever written for children. They have been lined up and compared with such classic masterpieces as Alice in Wonderland (1865) by Lewis Carroll and The Wind in the Willows (1908) by Kenneth Graham. How Milne uses poetry and prose together in his stories has earned him a place next to some of the great poets, such as E. Nesbit, Walter de la Mare and Robert Louis Stevenson (Greene). In my view, the author‟s basic purpose with writing the books was to make children, his son in particular, happy, and to give them a chance to enter an “enchanted place” (HPC 508). The books were not written to be a means of education or to be the source of constant in-depth analysis of over-zealous critics.

Winter, MD, MMM, JFK Family Medicine Residency Program Abstract Resident physicians are particularly susceptible to burnout due to the stresses of residency training. They also experience the added pressures of multitasking because of the increased use of computers and mobile devices while delivering patient care. Our Family Medicine residency program addresses these problems by teaching residents about the mindful practice of medicine. We utilize A. A. Milne’s classic children’s books, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, along with Benjamin Hoff’s The Tao of Pooh to explain Dr. Ron Epstein’s four habits of mindfulness: attentive observation, critical curiosity, beginner’s mind, and presence. We also use video clips from two Disney movies, The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh and A Day for Eeyore as well as Kenny Loggins’ song, House at Pooh Corner. With Winnie-the-Pooh’s help, residents learn how to become more mindful physicians by incorporating Epstein’s four habits of mindfulness into their daily practice.
