Marquetry using a - Course now full

The workshop on marquetry with a knife on Sunday 18st March 2018 is now full.

However, another workshop can be arranged if there is sufficient interest among members of the Guild. Please register your name with Robin Cromer if you are interested in such a workshop (see below).

A $40 fee will be charged to cover veneers and a contribution to the Guild. Five sheets of veneer (300 x 400 mm) will be provided (Birch, Kauri pine, American Cherry, American Walnut, and Blackwood), 0.6 square meters in total, making the workshop great value.

The workshop will be organised by Robin Cromer with help from Don Rowland. Neither of us consider ourselves expert in this craft but we do have some experience and are willing to share what we know. Don Rowland wrote a good background article on the subject for a workshop in 2009. That article has now been posted on the Guild website under “Resources/ Presentations and articles”. If you plan to attend, please read Don’s article and try to follow up some of the references: (http://www.woodcraftguild.org.au/wp- content/uploads/2012/05/Marquetry-with-a-knife.pdf )

We will plan to complete a basic marquetry design using the ‘window’ method to final glue-up stage. We will also aim to cover veneering techniques such as book matching of veneers, creating borders and possibly parquetry designs. Numbers will be limited to 10-12 but if more members are interested, we will look at having another workshop soon after.

Some basic equipment is required to get started with hand veneers, so attendees will require the following items or their equivalent.

Equipment

• A scalpel handle and spare . X-ACTO #2 handle is a good size and #2 blades are available in packs of 5 *. Traditional scalpel handles are fine but can become tiring to hold. X-ACTO #1 handles accept #11 scalpel blades. X-ACTO #2 handles also accept Swann Morton scalpel blades #26. ** The Swann-Morton blades #11 and #26 are suitable alternatives to the X-ACTO #2. • Cutting mat (40 x 30 cm). * • Aluminium or steel cutting rule (30 – 45 cm). * • Blue masking tape. Marquetry tape will be available at the workshop. • PVA glue – a small hobby size container is good for marquetry or a small open top jar with a small brush. Larger size container for gluing veneers to backing will be supplied. • Tissues or paper towels for padding up excess glue. • Medium grade whetstone (small) or for grinding the back of blades to sharpen. Squeeze bottle of water for the whetstone. • Transfer paper (white and/or graphite). * Note that ‘normal’ blue carbon paper is not recommended as it stains the veneers and is difficult to remove. • Pencils: 2H for transfer of patterns and a 2B (or softer) for other drawing. • Notebook & pencil. • You need to be able to see well, so bring a magnifying lamp or headband magnifier and supplementary light. • Bring your own veneers if you have them. * Items available from Eckerslys Art/Craft supplies ** Scalpel blades can be purchased on line in lots of 100 at Hobby Aust: (https://www.hobbytools.com.au/swann-morton-scalpel-blades-and- handles/?sort=featured&page=2 ) Contact Robin to register and arrange payment: Robin Cromer ([email protected])
