Strive For 5 continued from page 1 great to feature Glow and Cosmic Bowling but this does nothing to increase membership…unless we can succeed in signing up many of these recreational bowlers. We can begin with a rallying cry of ”Strive For Five Drive”; that is a goal of five million mem- bers. The USBC needs to increase income in order to operate properly. This can be done in several ways. But an increase in membership is the first step. It is the primary goal, a goal that can be reached. Here is a six-point plan to jump- start the project: 1. Seek a dues increase, even if only for one or two dollars. This will not increase membership but it will add dollars to the treasury. Those who object to this slight raise at such a ridiculously low rate should try to buy memberships for golf or tennis associations. 2. There are thousands upon thousands of seniors who are not sanctioned in every state. Give seniors a “senior” discount, even as low as two dollars. Two dollars times whatever number of unsanctioned seniors can run up a tidy sum. This is one area where the USBC and the bowling pro- Friday prietors must absolutely work hand-in-hand. It would benefit both sides. Perhaps a few free games of practice at specified hours would be an incentive. May 28th 2010 @ 7:00 pm 3.Entice youth bowlers with lower sanction fees. Also offer some sort of incentive to junior bowlers for soliciting new members. This could add additional bowlers to the membership. Teams - Mix 5 4.Select committees in all areas to canvas neighborhoods, private clubs, churches, and busi- nesses and present the advantages of belonging to an elite sports/recreational group. I’m sure that (Must have one of opposite sex) most proprietors have these programs on their agendas … implemented by their employees. None- theless, a concerted effort by ardent bowlers and proprietors could double or triple the possibilities 32 Teams of added membership. First Come First Serve 5. Explore possibilities for a USBC lottery for members only. Bowlers are a different sports breed. They may object to a dues increase but willingly gamble on anything. Each state has its own gambling regulations and many states do not allow gambling. A lottery would need similar recogni- 3 Games - $125.00 per Team tion from ever state and each state would want a hunk of the money. Nevertheless, it’s worth a try. 6.Concentrate on soliciting new members during the Glow-Bowling/ Cosmic Bowling events held on weekends throughout the country. Demonstrate the advantages of “belonging” to a league. Handicap - 90% of 230 A big portion of these incentives would be in the form of free games by proprietors. But it would (Side Pots Optional) be worth the price. MANY proprietors offer free games to “regular” customers. These freebies are all contingent on slow periods of operation and are hardly costly. Some short-sighted proprietors will refuse to “give away” any of their business. But is this not promotion? Can anyone doubt that Denny’s gave away millions of Grand Slam breakfasts during Super Bowl week? The dirty little PREPAID ENTRIES ONLY secret is they made up for it in charging for coffee… anywhere from $1.95 to $2.25 per cup. How about all the give-away and coupon promotions and “early bird menus” offered by many topnotch restaurants. Look at the never-ending promotions offered by Burger King, McDonalds, Del Taco, Entering Averages Taco Bell, and so many other 1. Winter 2008-09 Book. major corporations? Kim started with 10 in a row and spared for a 288 and finished with 268-202 for her best 758 series that raised her average up to 205 for this season. 8 Gamer Back in 1996 at St. Louis, MO, Kim won the Deaf Women World Championship in which she set the women’s record two games 473 series in the semi-finals. Also in the companion tournament Sunday April 18th 10AM - Upland Bowl National Deaf Queens, Kim set the high 4 games qualifying record of 874 before losing out in the quarterfinals. Kim made the Deaf Team USA by finishing 2nd to Stacey Thompson also of Kansas in the 40 games trials conducted by this writer in 1996 at Council Bluffs, IA. They won the silver medal in the 1997 for Deaf in . The World Games GUARANTEED for Deaf was changed to Deaflympics in 2001. Few years ago Kim reported that she hit a 270 in a league and reported back a week later with another 270 in another league. So with her recent 288 she may be warming up for a 300 soon. $1,500 2nd Deaf Travel Did Poorly As 1 in 6 Cash MacMonagle Led With 760 At Cal Bowl LAKEWOOD — After coming off a great scoring effort at Oak Tree Lanes, the 50th anniversary So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League hit a bump in its stop at Cal Bowl. Though Cal Bowl dressed its Limited to 120 Bowlers other side lanes well enough, the deaf bowlers never felt comfort- able bowling on this short side. The result was a lowest scoring $1,000 3rd session of the season. Only 8 bowlers made the honor roll and there were no 800s with Leroy MacMonagle leading for the 2nd straight time with his 760 $100 A Game Sidepots including 213-209. Previously at Oak Tree Lanes, Leroy led with 266/924. Also there was no team scoring 2700 team series to make the team honor roll. The highest was 2655 by Mid City. $500 2nd & 6th Game Sidepots For $20 The powerful dominating league leader Beach Cities finally fell badly losing 19-6 to 3rd place Quad Cities which gained 13 points to shorten Beach’s lead from 30.5 to 16.5 points. Second place Riverside also won 19 points from Sunland to gain 13 points and Cost: $150.00 Per Bowler is now only 15 points behind first place with two travel stops to go. Other teams made gains were Mid City’s 19-6 win over Orange County and S.F. Valley’s 18 to 7 win over El Camino Village. Check-In 9:00 to 10:00AM Behind MacMonagle’s 760 were Pablo Yoma with 731, Ed Abakumoff 722, Ken DeGroff (200) 718, Lonnie Jones Jr. 708 and Connie Marchione 701. Frank Sotelo rolled a 209 and besides Beach Cities’ surprising fall, the other bright star on the day is Celia Salcedo taking over the ladies season high game with her 217. The 75-year-old right-hander entered the 2010 USBC Open Championships needing just 272 pins to become the newest member of the tournament’s elite 100,000-Pin Club, and he got there in the seventh frame of his second team game. As always, his wife, Mary Cay, was by his side, and he was joined on the lanes by his granddaughter Cathy Kipp and his son, Lyle. Zikes posted games of 171, 178 and 150 for a 499 series as he became the 12th bowler in 107 years of tournament competition to eclipse the 100,000-pin mark. Late USBC Hall of Famer Joe Norris of San Diego tops the all-time pinfall list with 123,770. “Tonight was very special,” said Zikes, who is the proprietor of Beverly Lanes in Arlington Heights, Ill. “I was hoping to bowl better for my teammates, but it was a big thrill. I only needed 272 pins to get to 100,000, and for a minute, I thought it was going to take me all three games to get there. I do feel very proud and very fortunate to be able to bowl for that long.” Zikes began his Open Championships journey at the 1950 event in Columbus, Ohio, as a curious 15-year-old. Just 12 years later, he claimed the first of his six titles as he helped Strike ‘n Spare of Chicago to the top spot in Regular Team at the 1962 tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. He added another Regular Team title in 1963 and Regular All-Events and Team All-Events crowns in 1964 to become the only bowler in history to win in three consecutive years. The hall of famer later took home the Classic Singles title in 1975 and Classic Team in 1977. He also is a two-time Professional Bowlers Association national champion and a three-time winner on the PBA Senior Tour. Over the years, Zikes also found international success, winning gold medals at the 1963 and 1967 World Championships and the 1964 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships. “I have had a lot of milestones,” Zikes said. “To win three consecutive years against that many bowlers, you have to be at the right place at the right time. I have had so many big thrills, and to- night, achieving 100,000 pins and receiving a crystal pin was another one for me. I am so lucky to have been at the right place at the right time. Someone has been looking out for me.” Although Zikes has made 58 Open Championships appearances, every year seems like his first. “I still get goose bumps when I walk down Center Aisle,” Zikes said. “When a team walks down the Center Aisle, they may act nonchalant, but they are really nervous. There is something about FOuNtAiN BOwL this tournament that 70,000 bowlers look forward to. I still feel the butterflies when I walk down SummER 2010 LEAguE SChEDuLE the aisle, and I hope I always will.” There aren’t many milestones left for Zikes to achieve, but he does have his eye on making 60 Open Championships appearances. Only 13 bowlers have reached the 60-year mark. 714-963-7888 “If I’m healthy, I will be back,” Zikes said. “The last few years, I have had a few physical prob- ADuLt BOwLiNg LEAguES lems, which has not allowed me to practice like I normally would. DeVaney squandered his early four-bag- ger with a big-four in the 7th, then also failed to strike out on Cheetah when his first pitch in the 10th also hooked high, leaving him with 217. Page, who actually went third in the rotation, had posted a respectable 223 score when he overcame some issues on Join us for the Shark and Chameleon by finishing with a late hambone in frames 7-10. The score (unlike Anthony Kim’s late heroics at the Mas- ters) held up and Page, like fellow lefty Phil Mickelson, our all-new punched a ticket into the fi- nale. This five-frame show- down saw Page continuing his struggles on the Shark, as he missed the headpin for the second time in three shots (his other shot left a 3-4-7-9, which he converted). Page was able to right the ship, however, fol- lowing his frame one spare with strike, spare strike. O’Neill threw a quick COSMIC double, then a nine-spare, but pitched one wide on Viper for a difficult 1-2-4-10 washout. After failing to convert, the best he could do in the end was post 104 with three strikes on the Cheetah, which he did. Page then needed the first strike in the 10th and seven pins for the win, and he calmly stepped up, threw his urethane BOWLING ball (designed not to overhook on the massive friction of The Very Best the Cheetah pattern’s outside boards) way out and back for Light Show! of Laughlin… a pretty strike.
