Pragnę pokazać, że w kontekście amerykańskim The Front Runner może pełnić rolę tekstu kultury i medium pamięci, a dla nowych europejskich czytelników stanowić potencjalne źródło pamięci protetycznej, dostarczające literacką reprezentację doświad- czenia ujawnienia orientacji homoseksualnej i zmieniających się postaw społecznych wobec niebinarnych ról płciowych i nieheteroseksualności zaraz po zamieszkach w Stonewall i przed epidemią AIDS. This fact seems surprising because Warren, the first wife of George Tarnawsky, disappoint- ed with the lack of success with her work in English, in the 1960s published a few volumes of poetry in Ukrainian under the pen name Patricia Kilina. Hence she has a strong link to the Ukrainian literary process. Although a few scholarly articles have been published about Warren’s most popular novel, The Front Runner (1974), its sequels have not been studied yet. The aim of this article is to fill this gap by examining Billy’s Boy (1997). The authors of this article argue that by depicting the coming-of-age experience of John Wil- liam, the twelve-year-old son of Billy Sive who tries to find his own identity and find out more about his father, Warren manages to not only show that cultivating the postmemory of Billy and trying to understand his roots are crucial in the process of William’s matura- tion but also portrays social changes happening in the USA in the late 1990s.     ABSTRACT GAY MEN’S LITERATURE IN THE UNITED STATES (1903 – 1968): UNCOVERING THE BURIED ROOTS OF A QUEER TRADITION Adam W. Burgess, PhD Department of English Northern Illinois University, 2017 Ibis Gómez-Vega, Director This dissertation draws on queer-postmodernism and feminist standpoint theory to investigate and describe aspects of the gay American literary tradition before the historic Stonewall Riots. Specifically, the dissertation offers four points of enquiry: the significance of a text’s displacement in time and location; the successful pulp fiction genre; the importance of intertextuality in establishing discourse; and the complexities of gender and sexuality in fictional texts that incorporate and describe same-sex relationships. There are many works that examine gay American writing in the twentieth-century but much of this scholarship pertains to literature of the 1950s and later; criticism of gay texts published before Stonewall is severely limited. The output of texts by gay American writers begins before the twentieth-century but grows rapidly in scale and clarity of purpose after Whitman, beginning especially with Charles Warren Stoddard’s For the Pleasure of His Company (1903). As a literary historiography, this dissertation treats questions of culture and society alongside close readings of representative texts to argue that the gay literary tradition in the United States is intricately linked to institutions such as medicine, psychology, publication methods, and the law. She attended the City University of New York, earning a Bachelors in English and a Masters in Education. Vazquez lived and worked in San Francisco for almost two decades, becoming a seasoned activist and movement leader in causes ranging from immigrant rights to lesbian health. Vazquez was the founding director of the Women’s Building in San Francisco, the Director of the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and the Coordinator of Lesbian & Gay Health Services for the San Francisco Department of Public Health. She was also the co-founder and co-chair of Somos Hermanas, a Central American Women’s Solidarity Network. Vazquez returned to New York in 1994 as the Director of Public Policy for the LGBT Community Center in New York City. She has published in many journals, magazines, and anthologies and is a featured speaker at activist conferences including the NGLTF’s Creating Change.     Gaily Ever After: Neo-Victorian M/M Genre Romance for the Twenty-First Century Caroline Duvezin-Caubet (University of Poitiers, France) Abstract: This article examines the subgenre of M/M (gay) genre romance set in the nineteenth century, focusing on a corpus of 2017 to 2018 novels as well as shorter works by authors K. J. Charles and Cat Sebastian. Their writings are rooted in the legacy of Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances and the history of M/M romance, a recent genre which owes as much to digital fanfiction as it does to queer publishers in the 1960s and 1970s. I explore the idea of a queer Happily Ever After as a topos and telos that allows the narratives to re- write the past through creating a happy queer ‘archive’, while also engaging critically with the representation of marginalised gender, sexual, and racial identities. This fact seems surprising because Warren, the first wife of George Tarnawsky, disappoint- ed with the lack of success with her work in English, in the 1960s published a few volumes of poetry in Ukrainian under the pen name Patricia Kilina. Hence she has a strong link to the Ukrainian literary process. Although a few scholarly articles have been published about Warren’s most popular novel, The Front Runner (1974), its sequels have not been studied yet. The aim of this article is to fill this gap by examining Billy’s Boy (1997). The authors of this article argue that by depicting the coming-of-age experience of John Wil- liam, the twelve-year-old son of Billy Sive who tries to find his own identity and find out more about his father, Warren manages to not only show that cultivating the postmemory of Billy and trying to understand his roots are crucial in the process of William’s matura- tion but also portrays social changes happening in the USA in the late 1990s. Hosted by California Senator Sheila James Kuehl, the first openly gay or lesbian person to be elected to the California Legislature, the program also highlights individuals whose lives and work have left a lasting legacy in the LGBT community. Issues examined by the series cover such topics as the gay civil rights movement, domestic violence, gay marriage and hate crimes.
