Chapter 10 Implementation Plan The Project on Urban Transport Improvement for Kathmandu Valley in Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal Final Report May 2017 CHAPTER 10 IMPLEMENTATION PLAN 10.1 Transport Implementation Plan 10.1.1 Staging Plan (1) Basic Concept of Staging Plan Staging plan is divided into three phases, namely short term (-2020), middle term (2021-2025) and long term (2026-2030). The targets to be achieved in each phase are: Long term (2026 - 2030) - Establishment of sustainable transport with high mobility, safety and comfort. Middle Term (2021 – 2025) - Implementation of Priority Project - Establishment of all the systems necessary for achieving long term target Short Term (-2020) - Strengthening of institutional framework for planned development - Solving urgent issues - Commencement of disaster prevention measures Based on the targets, the concept in each phase for land use development, road development and public transport development is shown in Figure 10.1.1. VT-Hour, VT- KM and V/C ratio decreases a little even though increasing traffic demand. In these days, the demand of fresh vegetable is increasing day by day because of rapid population growth, urbanization and growing awareness towards green vegetable in the kitchen. Hence, in the urban fringes, vegetable gardening has appeared as one of the productive enterprises for cash generation as well as self-employment. This study is completely based on primary data collected in the field by household questionnaire survey, key informants interview as well as focus group discussion (FGD). Finding clearly indicates that the cultivation of vegetable around Kirtipur area is gradually increasing and also able to fulfill few demands of vegetables in the local market of Kirtipur. This area has emerged as one of the vegetable growing pocket area among the outlying areas of Kirtipur Municipality. Key words: Vegetable gardening, Machchhegaun, women participation and marketing channel. Introduction Vegetable gardening is the part of agricultural geography. It comprises of vegetable production in the small piece of land or gardens in limited quantity for home use and marketing purpose as well. Vegetable gardening is synonymously used as market gardening, home gardening and fresh vegetable market gardening where vegetable are basically grown for the fulfillment of urban demand. Generally, the cropping pattern in such gardens depends on the local market demand.

The project has four components: (1) Trade Facilitation; (2) Regional Road Connectivity; (3) Institutional Strengthening; and (4) Contingency Emergency Response. Under the second component, this project will carry out the following activities: (a) Improvement of the existing 2-lane Nagdhunga-Naubise-Mugling (NNM) Road; (94.7 km on the pivotal north-south trade corridor connecting Kathmandu and Birgunj) to a 2-lane with 1 m paved shoulders, and (b) Upgrading of the Kamala-Dhalkebar-Pathlaiya (KDP) Road of the Mahendra Highway (East West Highway) from 2-lane to 4-lane. An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) was undertaken during the detailed design phase of the NNM Road to assess the environmental and social risks and impacts of the NNM Road before execution of the project in accordance with the Government of Nepal’s (GoN) requirements and the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF).

    Bulletin of the Department of Geology C Bulletin of the Department of Geology, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal, Vol. 10, 2007, pp. 21–32 e y n g t o ra l l eo De G partment of Kirtipur Environmental status of Manahara River, Kathmandu, Nepal *Ramita Bajracharya and Naresh Kazi Tamrakar Central Department of Geology, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal ABSTRACT The Manahara River located in northeast part of the Kathmandu Valley has been disturbed for last one decade by several anthropogenic activities and natural causes thereby deteriorating its recreational functions and stream habitat. To obtain an existing environmental condition and disturbances of the river, the river was surveyed for its habitat, pollution level and surface water quality. Among the five representative segments of the river, the downstream segment (Sano Thimi) was scored into intermediate category showing more pollution and environmental deterioration compared to the upstream segments. Turbidity, electrical conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand and ammonia increase, whereas dissolved oxygen decreases from upstream to downstream with exponential functions. Aquatic lives like Garra sp. (Buduna), Schizothorax sp. (Asala), Channa sp. (Hiele) and Heteropneustes sp. (Singe) were observed except in downstream of the Jadibuti Bridge situated downstream from Sano Thimi stretch. Fish species were rare from the Jadibuti area most probably due to reduced dissoved oxygen (5 mg/l). Coliform bacteria ranged from 3000 to 4000 in the Manahara River showing high amount of bacterial contamination. Major disturbances, which affect river habitat and surface water quality of the Manahara River were destruction of riparian buffer zones, excavation excessive amount of sand from the river, encroachment of floodplains and bars, solid waste and sewer effluent, and tendency of landuse change.

Received 10 September, 2020; Accepted 13 October, 2020 There is an emerging debate in the literature of urbanism that public open space is in crisis in the cities of developing countries due to the increasing trends of urbanization and in-migration. With the significant growth of the urban population and rapid expansion of the city, the land demand for housing and other infrastructure development is very high. The high rate of urbanization due to which encroachment, high speculation, use change, etc. are the major reasons for decreasing public open spaces. There are many inferences that public open spaces are decreasing in Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) as Tundikhel; an important public open space located in the heart of Kathmandu is decreasing in its size and has changed in its use over time. At present, KMC does not have a sizable public open space for emergency uses such as evacuation, relief, recovery, and reconstruction during the catastrophic hazards. Analysis of historical imagery and the changing patterns of land use reveal that the decreasing trends of open spaces may lead more vulnerable to the city as it does not have public open space for disaster management in an emergency need.
