One of our main objectives is to establish a sizeable catalog of studio orchestra arrangements. During the Swing Era and into the 1960s many vocalists recorded with a big band augmented by a string section and often French horns, a harp, and percussion instruments. This instrumentation is making a comeback in the studio and the concert hall. The problem is that there isn’t adequate repertoire for these performances. We have previously published studio orchestra arrangements from the libraries of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Artie Shaw. Now we’re squarely focused on Ella Fitzgerald. Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook was the high point in the series of songbook packages produced by Norman Granz for the Verve label. There had been four such projects beforehand: boxes of songs by Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington and Irving Berlin preceded it. Granz decided to make the Gershwin box the most ambitious of all of them; 5 LPs plus a 7” limited edition bonus disc that included Riddle arrangements of Gershwin instrumental compositions. This project had the enthusiastic cooperation and participation of lyricist Ira Gershwin who attended the recording sessions and re-wrote lyrics for the occasion. This was the first songbook that was arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle. Granz had wanted Riddle for the first songbooks, but he was unavailable at the time. Most of the Gershwin Songbook arrangements feature a big band (with reed doubles) along with strings and French horn. We are presenting the arrangements as-written but also including an optional synthesizer part that may be used in place of the strings - though we strongly encourage the conductor to perform the pieces as intended. Look for many more releases over the coming months! We, along with the arrangers and performers we represent, thank you for your support of our efforts! P.S. - Visit us at www.ejazzlines.com - we carry over 7,000 arrangements from every publisher: Hal Leonard, Alfred, Sierra, Lush Life, Powerhouse, Barnhouse, Advance, Lorenz, Smart Chart, 3-2, Kendor, Second Floor, Walrus, and other publishers. GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

Camp Sol is a weekend retreat for families who have experienced the death of a child/sibling. The goal of the current study is to establish areas reported by parents and sibling campers as being impacted by their experience at camp in hopes of identifying standardized measures that can be implemented in the future evaluation process. This will provide future researchers the ability to quantitatively evaluate the overall efficacy of a family bereavement camp among bereaved parents and siblings. SUBJECTS: Camp Sol evaluations were collected post-camp over the span of five and a half years totaling 656 evaluations. Parents comprised 50.2% of the sample, where the majority of them spoke English versus Spanish (81.4% vs. 18.5%). The children comprised 49.8% of the sample and ranged from the age of 4 to 19.

Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. • Film (CORE-UA.750)
1 Dana Polan Fall 2017 Frank Sinatra: Movies, Music, Media, Masculinity Expressive Culture: Film (CORE-UA.750) W 12:30 – 4:30 PM ROOM: Cantor 102 office: 629 Tisch office hours: Tues. 9:15 AM - 12:15PM and by appointment phone: (212) 998-1614 email: [email protected] Although he is obviously best known within realms of American popular culture as a singer, Frank Sinatra had of course a very important and extensive career in Hollywood cinema (along with other media such as radio and television). While a number of the films serve certainly as little more than star vehicles (whether conceived of as such by the major studios during the decades of the 1940s and 1950s when the classic studio system was still in place or orchestrated by Sinatra himself from the late 1950s on, when the break-up of the studio system encouraged creative personnel to go independent and develop projects of their own), it is striking how often Sinatra worked with directors that film study has come to think of as auteurs – creators of a cinema of exploration and inventive style often revealing of a personal directorial vision in both theme and visual design. Many of these stand-out films use Sinatra’s connotations as a performer from an ethnic and working-class background to investigate – and sometimes interrogate – postwar class structures and strictures, especially around projections of masculinity. This course approaches the culture and politics of postwar America through a study of key films starring Frank Sinatra. Yet while the course will focus most on cinema and the meanings of performance within that medium, we will also pay extensive attention to Sinatra’s efforts in other media, such as radio and recording where we will devote much time to the analysis of pop music as American expressive art.

  • Jazz at the Crossroads)
MUSIC 127A: 1959 (Jazz at the Crossroads) Professor Anthony Davis Rather than present a chronological account of the development of Jazz, this course will focus on the year 1959 in Jazz, a year of profound change in the music and in our society. In 1959, Jazz is at a crossroads with musicians searching for new directions after the innovations of the late 1940s’ Bebop. Musical figures such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane begin to forge a new direction in music building on their previous success earlier in the fifties. The recording Kind of Blue debuts in 1959 documenting the work of Miles Davis’ legendary sextet with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb and reflects a new direction in the music with the introduction of a modal approach to composition and improvisation. John Coltrane records Giant Steps the culmination of the harmonic intricacies of Bebop and at the same time the beginning of something new. Ornette Coleman arrives in New York and records The Shape of Jazz to Come, an LP that presents a radical departure from the orthodoxies of Be-Bop. Dave Brubeck records Time Out, a record featuring a new approach to rhythmic structure in the music. Charles Mingus records Mingus Ah Um, establishing Mingus as a pre-eminent composer in Jazz. Bill Evans forms his trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian transforming the interaction and function of the rhythm section. The quiet revolution in music reflects a world that is profoundly changed. The movement for Civil Rights has begun. The Birmingham boycott and the Supreme Court decision Brown vs.

Helen, whose flight to Troy with the Trojan prince Paris had prompted the Greek expedition to seek revenge and reclaim her, is now home in Sparta, living harmoniously once more with her husband Meneláos (Menelaus). His brother Agamémnon, commander in chief of the Greek forces, was murdered on his return from the war by his wife and her paramour. Of the Greek chieftains who have survived both the war and the perilous homeward voyage, all have returned except Odysseus, the crafty and astute ruler of Ithaka (Ithaca), an island in the Ionian Sea off western Greece. Since he is presumed dead, suitors from Ithaka and other regions have overrun his house, paying court to his attractive wife Penélopê, endangering the position of his son, Telémakhos (Telemachus), corrupting many of the servants, and literally eating up Odysseus’ estate. Penélopê has stalled for time but is finding it increasingly difficult to deny the suitors’ demands that she marry one of them; Telémakhos, who is just approaching young manhood, is becom- ing actively resentful of the indignities suffered by his household. Many persons and places in the Odyssey are best known to readers by their Latinized names, such as Telemachus. The present translator has used forms (Telémakhos) closer to the Greek spelling and pronunciation.
