Hello, As Module Three draws to a close, so does some of the great House Quizzes that have been on offer to you for a period of time, made by many departments across the school. This includes the Math's House Quiz that was sent out by Mr. Hardy on email. Avalon and Alexandria dominated whilst Sempringham and Castille managed a draw in House Participation Points. After last weeks house assemblies, we hope that many students will begin to put in the effort in an attempt to guarantee the House Cup! Will the ribbons on the trophy be blue, yellow, green or red?! It is up to you to make the difference!! We hope you have a great Half Term Break and are all refreshed for the upcoming 4th Module of this Academic Year. Enjoy the articles, Catherine  Year 8 News Sophie Harrison

What's Going on in Year 8? This year’s school show is West Side Story, a romantic musical based on Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, and it will be performed this week on Wednesday and Thursday. From the main parts to the lighting crew, everyone has worked exceptionally hard to help bring the production together. Last year’s production of Les Miserables was a huge success and, though it will be hard to top that performance, we’re sure the 2017 cast will do their best. Good luck to everyone taking part, or in other words, break a leg! Though the half term break is drawing ever closer, the Year 8s have had yet another busy week full of opportunities to get involved with house events. With valuable house points on offer, there will hopefully be lots of participants in the House Paper Aeroplane competition (which is taking place on Wednesday 8th February in the Sports Hall). If this isn’t the type of activity for you, don’t worry. There are a range of house events introduced every week, giving students the chance to contribute towards their house total at the end of the academic year. The Music House Quiz, put together by Mr Billinger, is still open for anybody who wants to take part. It doesn’t take long, but it will certainly make a difference to your house’s number of participation points. With only a few days left to enter, make sure you don’t miss out! After a fantastic performance in the Future Chef Local heat, Holly Blockley attended the Regional heat at Loughborough College. With the help of her Mother Holly set about improving her dishes acting upon feedback received by the local heat judges. On the day, Holly held it together and set about her task with determination any professional chef would have been proud of. The 6 students were again taken out of their comfort zones and asked to prepare and cook a main dish and dessert in an industrial style kitchen. The set criteria is to cook 2 portions of each of the 2 courses within a 90 minutes timeframe and also within a £10.00 budget. Holly’s dishes were prepared and presented on time, she gave it everything she had. After an anxious wait for the judges to deliberate the presentation took place. With some very high standards of cooking by all competitors, the winner of the regional heat was Holly. The judges were particularly impressed with her dessert. The Grand Final will be taking place 27th March at the Westminster College after an overnight stay including attending a dinner hosted by Celebrity Chef Brian Turner the competition patron. To reach the Grand Final is an incredible achievement, Congratulations Holly. Just one more heat to go, good luck. Cultural x Social x Moral x Spiritual World Book Day 2017 Library Quiz Library Staff

Now, then. We have lots of entries from Alexandria, but hardly any from the other houses.

Where is your house pride?

Who is going to represent your house in the Big Book Quiz on World Book Day 2017 if you cannot be bothered?

Hmmm??

The quiz will take place on Thursday 2nd March at lunchtime in the library. If you would like to help your house win, first please enter our online quiz: just go to the Library page on Sharepoint, then select ‘Name Another Book By The Writer Of…’ from the left hand menu. You will be given titles of books, and you need to name another book by the same author. We will then inform you nearer the time if you made it into your house team.

Go on, have a go. Cultural x Social x Moral x Spiritual Fantasy Games Afternoon – Friday 17th March Library Staff You have the opportunity to play non-electronic games in the school library including Magic the Gathering, YuGiOh, Dungeons and Dragons, and Warhammer. Please also feel free to bring in other games for people to try. The aim is to raise money for the school charities so you will have to pay £2.50 per session to join in. There will be four sessions: lunchtime, P4, P5 and after school, so staying for the whole afternoon would cost a charitable donation of £10. If you wish to take time out of lessons to play games P4 and/or P5 you must have written permission from a parent/guardian and each teacher whose lesson you are missing and you must catch up with the work in your own time. I’m afraid this opportunity is not open to year 11 as they are too close to their GCSEs, but year 11 students are welcome to join in at lunchtime or after school. If you wish to attend, please email the organiser Lamara Wilson at [email protected] for further information and a permission form. Never Get Out of Bed Again Everyone knows that getting out of bed can be one of the toughest parts of the day. One tech company claims it’s found the answer to this living nightmare. At a Beam shop in downtown Palo Alto, California, employees came from all over the world, with not one grumble! Workers, instead of dragging themselves out of bed, “beam in” to the store from the comfort of their own homes. The robots can unlock the doors, adjust the lights, interact with customers and as a special party trick, hand out sweets to curious passers-by. The people behind the screens can control the robots’ movements with their keyboard and mouse and use a webcam to display their face. The sight of what is effectively a huge head on stilts careering around the shop floor like a drunken sailor can be both comical and slightly terrifying to an unsuspecting customer. Mr Hassan has pedigree when it comes to technology. The billionaire previously helped write the code that led to the creation of search engine Google and is reported to have made millions from his early stake in the firm. He was frustrated at the amount of group chat companies yet none where workers could do their job at home. Cultural Social x Moral x Spiritual Film of the Week James Ghest

The Lego Batman Movie ‘’ is a 2017 animated spinoff film from 2014’s ‘The Lego Movie’, based off of the immensely successful toy brand. The film is directed by Chris McKay and written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern and John Whittington, and had a budget of $80 million. Will Arnett voices the lead of Batman, and Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson and Ralph Fiennes star in supporting roles. Like its 2014 counterpart, the Lego Batman movie appears to have been animated in a stop motion style, but, in actual fact, the entire thing was produced digitally. ‘There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman wants to save the city from the Joker's hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Maybe his superhero sidekick Robin and loyal butler Alfred can show him a thing or two.’ The film has received a generally positive critical response, with a 98% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, and an IMDb score of 8.1/10. ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ releases on Friday 10th February. Cultural x Social x Moral x Spiritual West Side Story Sophie Harrison From Module 2, a busy crew of budding actors alongside Mrs Wilkinson, Mr Craven and Mr Billinger have been preparing for the school production this year. On Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th February, the cast showcased their hard work and effort and we are glad to announce that it was a huge success! Starring sixth formers Ellie Martland (Maria) and Harry Nuttall (Tony), the romantic musical based on ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was truly spellbinding. From the lighting crew to those involved in making programmes or selling tickets, everybody both on and off the stage worked exceptionally hard to pull together the performance. The show, based on the rivalry of teen gangs in America, followed the tragic story of Tony and Maria (from opposing gangs: the Sharks and the Jets). With outstanding vocals from Harry Nuttall and Ellie Martland in many numbers including ‘Tonight’ and support from the incredible chorus, the audience became enraptured in the sorrowful storyline. Despite the fact that the lights stopped working on one of the two nights, the show still went on with the lighting crew improvising with two spotlights. Nevertheless, the production was still fantastic, especially with the orchestra playing without fault on both evenings. Mr Billinger played the piano expertly throughout the performance, and the show wouldn’t have been able to take place without the combined efforts of both him and the orchestra. Moreover, without the efforts of Mrs Wilkinson, Mr Billinger and Mr Craven, there wouldn’t have been a play at all, so we want to thank them all for their dedication to this year’s production of West Side Story. There are obviously too many people to congratulate by name, but we want to congratulate everyone who was a part of it. Last year’s production of Les Miserables was equally stunning and though at the time it seemed almost impossible to top it, the 2017 cast have certainly been up to the challenge! We can’t wait to see what next year’s production will be like and with so many talented students involved in this year’s production, the stakes are certainly very high! Priory Press needs YOU!
