It has been the practice since H)51 to publish for each District a Consus Handbook, containing the Census Statistics for each village and town in the District together with certain administrative statistics colleded from the various Department.;; of the State Government. This publication was cOInpiled by the Census Department and publIshed! by the Sta:te Government. The ccntentR of the District Census Handbook have been; consideravly improved during the subsequent Censuses and in 1'971 this publication is' being brought out in three separate purtf--- Part A-Vilhge and Town Directory. Part B-\'iUage and Townwise Primary Census Abstract; and Part C-Analytical Report and Administrative Statements and District Census Tables. The history and origin of the District Census Handbook have been given in the Introductory Note of this volume. 'The present volume of rart-A hUG two sections-Village Directory ano 'l~own: DIrectory. In the Village Directory, basic information relating to the villages such as Educational, ::Medical, Drinking waiter-supply, Electricity, Communioa tions, Post and Telegraphs facilities as well as infornuiion on area, staple-food, land use data and other allied information are given. In the Eecond section, viz., Town Directory, informa'tion for tbe TOWllB a.bout the Status, Growth history, Functional category, Physical aspects, Mun:cipal finance, Civic and other amenities are presented. Details about the 1V(edICal~ Educational, Hecreaiional facilities available in the towns as well as particulars regard ing Tirade, Commerce, Industry and b:mking are also given. The population particulars!. of the towns as per 1971 Census toge_ther with the population of thes,e towns since 1901 and Religious composition of the population in 1971 are aI.so furnished. The details other 'than population particulars presented in these statemenfs ha.ve been obtained from the concerned departments of the State Government for whic!l I am thankful to the Collector. The District Census Handbook for each district presellting tae Census data for 'the village!> and towns of tile district is being published from ;l951 census. 'rill then, the village statistics show.ing merely the number of houses and population by religion in respect of each village and town were published as supplement. In 1951, the general population tables.t economic tables and village-wise and town-wise statiBtics relating to taluks were presented as Part I and Social and Cultural Tables as Part II. In 1961 also, the District Census Handbook was published in two volumes. In Volume I, all the Census tables giving taluk-wise data with a narrative report were published and Volume II was confined to present village-wise and town-wise statistics known as Primary C~nBui Abstract which gives the basic data Eke population, literates, scheduled castes, scheduled .Tribes and the industrial cla,ssifLCutlOn of workers and non-workers. As these data are finalised in the first stage of tabulation itself in Hl71 Census, it has been aecided in thiiJ Census to present the D.C.H. in 3 parts. Part-A containing the Village and Town Directory which will show the land ulle pattern dalia, basi~ amenities available in the vjHages and the conditions of· the t'Jwns. Part-B furnishing the Village and Town P.C.A. Part-C presenting the administrative statistics collected and compiled from various departments, Census tables and a shorb analytical report. This method of preparing the Handbook in 3 parts is also to facilitate the timely publication of the basic data relating to villages and towns which are required by various departments and research scholars. lvlethod of p1"escntation. The present volume being Part-A presents the Village and rrown Directory aI Hu. titles suggest. It lists ant aU the villages and towns in the State. '11he Village Ditectory is presented at the taluk level and Town Dir.ectory at di~trict level. '1'11e Village Directory is presentecl first followed by the 'rown. DIrectory. Vill(,(ge Directory. In the Village Directory, for each taluk, a statement showing the villages, th.ir extent, the amenities like Educational, Medical, Drinking "Yater Supply, Communications, Postal & Telegraphs, etc., available within each village and the land· use pattern is given. In addition to this, particulars in regard to s'taple food, land use data and certain other' miscellaneous information such as the existence of veterinary hospital, co-operative societies, banks, etc. are also furnished. An alphabetical list of. villages has also been prepared indicating the Location Code Number of the village for purpose of quick reference. Apart from these particulars, the land use particulars of places comprising of non-city urban units (non.munic·ipal area) is given as Appendix I. A Italuk-wise abstract showin~ the tota.l number of institutions and number of villages where such basic amenities like Educa.tional, Medica.l, Drinkng Water Supply, Communications, Postal & Telegraphi, etc. are available has also been prepared and given as Appendix II. The particulars relating to Village Directory have been collected from the concerned .Tahsildars for each revenue village as a whole and particulars in respect 0: places compri sing of Non-City urban units (Non-Municipal units) and Municipal units ha.Te .of b.'en 12-21-AIA.. furnished in the Village Directory Statement. The detaIls of the data furnished In different columns, of the Village Directory and the method of collection of the data on land use pattern, etc., are indicated below :- Location Code N'llmber. Numbers have been assigned to the administrative units of district, taluk and village to denote their location. By a combination of these numbers, it would be pOf\,;,l-le t') know the exact location of an area. The district number is given along with the name of the district on the cover page and the taluk number is shown against the taluk name in the concerned pages. The villages in each taluk are arranged in the IJocation Code order. r.I.'he village number has been given against the name of the concerned unit and tha numbers have been assigned in Arabic numerals for each, taluk separately. hJducational Amenities. Primary School-Up to Vth Standard. MidiUe School-Up tc VIIl th Standard. High School-Up to XIth Standard. Power supply. Villages having electrification. facilitief?, for agricultural purposes only are also taken as electrified and a suitahle indication in this regard has been noted in: the remarks column. Communications. Villages having HaiIway Station within a, mile are taken as served by train facilities. Villages connected by road are also indicated in this column. Staple Ji'ood. Food of the majority population of the village during the major portion of the Jear is taken as staple food. F_orest. This includes all actually forested area the lands classified or administered as forest's under any legal enactment dealing with forests whether state ~wned or private. If any portion of such land is not actuailly wooded but put to some agrIcultural use, that portion has been included under the appropriate heading of cultivated or uncultivated land. Irrigated and unirr£gated land. Irrigated and unirrigated covers all agricultural land and includes net area sown with crops and orchards and also current and other fallows. As far as possible, the extent, of irrigated land under different types of irrigation as! river, tank and well and the total area irrigated have also been indicated. Cultivable waste. This includes lands fit for cultivation, whether or not taken up for cultivation or once ,taken up for cultivat,ion but not cultivated f,or more than five years in succession.
