It was developed by “over 900 East locals who came together to create Grand Targhee, Inc. in 1966 to help out the economy of the community.” It opened on December 26, 1969. “The original inhabitants of the area around Grand Targhee were the , Bannock, Blackfoot, and Crow tribes. The Shoshone Indians called the the Tee‐Win‐At meaning ‘high pinnacles’. The name Grand Targhee pulls from the Grand Tetons and Chief Targhee, head chief of the Bannock tribe. Chief Targhee was know n for his pacifism, strong character and integrity. Vertical drop is 2270 feet, base line elevation is 7851 feet. There are mountains in the National Forest. They are Fred’s Mountain (closest to the resort), Peaked Mountain and Mary’s Nipple.
