She’s a physician who heals, a musician who entertains, a veteran who serves her country, and a philanthropist who believes the more you give, the more you receive. Her life exemplifies what we strive to inspire in our students—a desire to learn, a dedication to service and citizenship, the ability to problem-solve and think critically, and a lifelong commitment to personal growth and development. At MCC, we are grateful that Dr. Lim has chosen to shine her light on us with her participation as a member of MCC’s Development Council and her extraordinary philanthropic generosity. In her own life, growing up in Singapore, she saw how studying music promoted her creativity and critical thinking. Today, as a practitioner of integrative medicine, she combines conventional Western medicine with complementary healing practices that strengthen the body, mind, and spirit. Combining her love of music and a desire to give back to her local community and fellow veterans, her impact can be seen throughout campus with her gifts supporting the Performing Arts Center, the Veteran’s Endowment Fund, music department students, and the Rose Garden. She gave her first gift to Mesa Community College to help students advance their personal and professional development through engaged learning, and become positive forces of change for the community and the world. Her impression of MCC’s future is bright. From her insider perspective as a member of the Development Council, she has confidence that the executive team and faculty will continue to be leaders in empowering individuals to succeed and be positive citizens, both locally and globally. We are thankful for her partnership as we strive to lead the way to success for anyone who turns to us to seek it. 2017 DONOR ANNUAL REPORT | 11 Gift of $10K Propelling Exercise Sciences to New Heights with Charitable Support Wayne Balmer Alumni-Student Wayne Balmer is among Mesa Community College’s most enthusiastic students. He’s taken so many classes here that he’s obtained four associate degrees and eight certificates. The completion of his ninth certificate is just around the corner. His first class was work-related. As an urban planner for the city of Mesa in 1993, he was project manager for the civilian development of the Williams Air Force Base. The idea was to convert Williams Air Force Base into an international airport for cargo— and knowing nothing about what that would entail, he enrolled in international business classes at MCC. At the time, not only did he complete a Certificate in International Business, he gained the knowledge to establish a foreign trade zone, which ultimately attracted business investment and made the project a success. Throughout the rest of his career, he would come home from work and take online classes for fun—as varied as Sociology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Death Management, and Human Resources. He also started donating to the MCC Student Scholarship Fund. When he retired in 2014, he decided to go back to school at MCC. He said, “I looked at the classes I had already taken and started filling in the gaps to complete the degrees and certificates.” In addition to supporting the Student Scholarship Fund, Wayne wanted to help promote the Exercise Science department and support students studying to become personal trainers. He said, “People think of Exercise Science as jocks lifting weights. But it’s also a focus on health—something everyone can relate to. These classes are teaching me how to have a healthy lifestyle so that I’m ready for the next 20 years.” First, he created and funded a promotional brochure to attract more interest in Exercise Science at MCC. Then, he established the Wayne Balmer Exercise Science Certification Scholarship. The scholarship covers membership, test, and material costs for professional certification by a nationally accredited organization. As one of MCC’s biggest fans, we are lucky to have Wayne’s support, and also his valuable participation in classes. He said, “Whether it’s a transition from high school or getting back to college after a while, you’ll have a good experience.
