Dear Friend of ,

Mesa Community College is a cornerstone of our community, an exciting and nurturing environment where people learn to thrive in their lives and contribute to society.

Every day in our classrooms and online, men and women of all ages and walks of life are achieving their personal goals and blossoming into our local leaders in business, the arts, civic service, and more.

Because of friends like you, MCC provides high-quality, affordable, and accessible education. Consider how your support of MCC helps a recent high school graduate exploring his or her passion and talent for art … a young man or woman who has always wanted to be a firefighter … a single parent going back to school to become a nurse … and a recent retiree taking a variety of classes to stay engaged.

And, in a fast-changing local and global economy, support like yours ensures MCC can give our students the competitive edge with a wide variety of relevant programs areas, degrees, and certificates.

Thanks to you, success truly starts at MCC.

In the following pages, you’ll read how, as a valued friend of MCC, you are making personal dreams come true and enhancing our community.

Investing in Veterans and the Arts

Dr. Ruth Tan Lim Member, Development Council

Dr. Ruth Tan Lim is a woman of many talents. She’s a physician who heals, a musician who entertains, a veteran who serves her country, and a philanthropist who believes the more you give, the more you receive.

Her life exemplifies what we strive to inspire in our students—a desire to learn, a dedication to service and citizenship, the ability to problem-solve and think critically, and a lifelong commitment to personal growth and development.

At MCC, we are grateful that Dr. Lim has chosen to shine her light on us with her participation as a member of MCC’s Development Council and her extraordinary philanthropic generosity.

In her own life, growing up in Singapore, she saw how studying music promoted her creativity and critical thinking. Today, as a practitioner of integrative medicine, she combines conventional Western medicine with complementary healing practices that strengthen the body, mind, and spirit.

Combining her love of music and a desire to give back to her local community and fellow veterans, her impact can be seen throughout campus with her gifts supporting the Performing Arts Center, the Veteran’s Endowment Fund, music department students, and the Rose Garden.

She gave her first gift to Mesa Community College to help students advance their personal and professional development through engaged learning, and become positive forces of change for the community and the world.

Her impression of MCC’s future is bright. From her insider perspective as a member of the Development Council, she has confidence that the executive team and faculty will continue to be leaders in empowering individuals to succeed and be positive citizens, both locally and globally.

We are thankful for her partnership as we strive to lead the way to success for anyone who turns to us to seek it.

Propelling Exercise Sciences to New Heights with Charitable Support

Wayne Balmer Alumni-Student

Wayne Balmer is among Mesa Community College’s most enthusiastic students. He’s taken so many classes here that he’s obtained four associate degrees and eight certificates. The completion of his ninth certificate is just around the corner. His first class was work-related. As an urban planner for the city of Mesa in 1993, he was project manager for the civilian development of the Williams Air Force Base. The idea was to convert Williams Air Force Base into an international airport for cargo— and knowing nothing about what that would entail, he enrolled in international business classes at MCC. At the time, not only did he complete a Certificate in International Business, he gained the knowledge to establish a foreign trade zone, which ultimately attracted business investment and made the project a success. Throughout the rest of his career, he would come home from work and take online classes for fun—as varied as Sociology, Marriage and Family Therapy, Death Management, and Human Resources. He also started donating to the MCC Student Scholarship Fund. When he retired in 2014, he decided to go back to school at MCC. He said, “I looked at the classes I had already taken and started filling in the gaps to complete the degrees and certificates.” In addition to supporting the Student Scholarship Fund, Wayne wanted to help promote the Exercise Science department and support students studying to become personal trainers. He said, “People think of Exercise Science as jocks lifting weights. But it’s also a focus on health—something everyone can relate to. These classes are teaching me how to have a healthy lifestyle so that I’m ready for the next 20 years.” First, he created and funded a promotional brochure to attract more interest in Exercise Science at MCC. Then, he established the Wayne Balmer Exercise Science Certification Scholarship. The scholarship covers membership, test, and material costs for professional certification by a nationally accredited organization. As one of MCC’s biggest fans, we are lucky to have Wayne’s support, and also his valuable participation in classes. He said, “Whether it’s a transition from high school or getting back to college after a while, you’ll have a good experience. You’ll get a better idea of what your future might hold. As an older adult, all you have to do is get out of the house. College is not just for kids. It’s fun, there’s a lot to learn, you’ll meet new people, and you’ll have a positive experience.” We couldn’t agree with him more!

Supporting Student Veterans’ Growth through Scholarships

Jean Sandoval Alumni

At MCC, we believe any age is “college age”. For recent high school graduates to adults in their twilight years, we offer a welcoming learning and growing environment.

Jean Sandoval had a career working for the City of Mesa, but she’d never had a chance to finish a college degree. At mid-life, she decided to go back to school at Mesa Community College, where the classes are small and the instructors are accessible. She said, “When I walked into the first class, I expected only high school graduates, but there were a lot of people my age which made me feel comfortable.” She especially appreciated the support from Bob Pease, her instructor in Beginning Algebra. “I had taken Algebra two other times before that. He gave me the confidence that I could do this.”

After graduating MCC with an Associate’s degree, Jean went on to get a B.A. and an M.A. in Global Technology and Development from Arizona State University. Along the way, her husband, Richard, helped her with her homework assignments, from home physics experiments to proofreading papers. She was working toward her master’s degree when Richard passed away in 2008.

Not long afterward, she decided to honor her husband by establishing the Richard Gonzales Sandoval Scholarship Fund at Mesa Community College. She had received tuition reimbursement from her employer to pay for school, and she wanted to “pay it forward” for other students who couldn’t afford college.

She then furthered her support by getting involved with veterans on campus. “These guys and gals are coming back from their tour of duty and I wanted to help give them what they needed to be successful.”

Her gifts include money for graphing calculators, seminars and conferences, and a barbeque grill for the Veteran’s Center on campus. The grill, lovingly called “the Jean Machine” brings veterans together, and they invite Jean to their barbeques. Jean said, “It’s interesting for me to see these students enjoy what I have been able to provide, even if it’s just hot dogs. I spend time with the veterans and we can talk about anything from world affairs to crockpot cooking and it’s a good feeling.”

Gifts from alumni like Jean illustrate the success of MCC’s program, which promotes personal development, as well as the desire to help others.

Drachler Gift Establishes a One-of-a-Kind Library of Art History

Dr. Carole Drachler MCC Retired Faculty Member

Growing up in Detroit, Carole Drachler was surrounded by art. Her mother, a painter, took her to art museums and showed her how to look at the world through art.

In college, she was further inspired by her professors, and went on to get a PhD in Art History. Mesa Community College came into her life in the early ‘80s, when she was hired as an art history professor. It was her dream job for 26 years.

“MCC was wonderful to me. It was fun. They have an amazing, caring staff. I adored the students. They gave me complete freedom to teach how I wanted. I had the best job anyone could ever have. I consider myself very fortunate to have taught at Mesa. It was the job of a lifetime.”

Professor Drachler engaged MCC students with her passion for art, accessible teaching style, and personal collection of art slides and books from years of extensive travel throughout the world.

“Art history connects you to the history of the world through pictures and buildings, instead of words in a textbook. Art elevates us. It makes us feel like we’re immortal. It opens up the world. To show people how to think about what we see is such a joy.”

Not long after Dr. Drachler retired, she and her husband were attending an MCC fundraiser and began to think about how she wanted to make a meaningful gift to commemorate her connection to the college. “My husband and I decided that to leave a real mark, I needed to do something really spectacular.” And the idea for the Carole Drachler Library was born.

Dr. Drachler has donated 99% of her entire personal collection of art history books and memorabilia from her travels. The 2,000+ books and objects will be housed in a room in the Mesa Community College Art Museum. The Drachlers are also funding the construction of the room and are helping to design the space.

“The room will be a little treasure, an artistic experience when we’re done,” Dr. Drachler said. “Books have been my passion, after family and teaching. I’m happy that generations of students will use the books I enjoyed.”

36 | 2017 DONOR ANNUAL REPORT Notes of Gratitude

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. As a single father raising two children, every dollar counts on my journey for a better life, for both my children and myself. I will do my utmost to honor this opportunity both with my involvement at MCC and by working with my community for a better Arizona. I only can hope that I honor this gift to the highest level. Thank you very much from my family and me. TODD SMELTZER STUDENT, ASSOCIATE IN ARTS

After the kids grew up and moved out, I was finally preparing to go back to school when my husband lost his job, and I was diagnosed with cancer. The past few years have been filled with surgery and chemo which ate up all our savings and retirement. I need to be able to help with our financial distress, but without a degree, I am unable to apply for the jobs I used to do. Now is the time for me to finish school. The MCC scholarship I received will allow me to take a giant step towards focusing on my education and finishing my bachelor’s degree. Thank you for the opportunity to continue towards accomplishing my educational and life goals. VALERIE TANNER STUDENT, AA FINE ARTS-THEATRE

I am so grateful for this opportunity I have to thank you for the help you have given to me, and thereby to my young family and those I plan to help throughout my future career. I am a husband and a father of an eight-month-old little girl. I plan to one day support the dreams of others by helping them to start and grow small businesses. I know that it will not only be my efforts that get me to where I want to be but will also be because of the help I receive from people and organizations like you. I give my sincere gratitude to you and hope you know that your scholarship will not be wasted on me. Thank you again!

JOHNATHAN SPEAKMAN STUDENT, AAS BUSINESS

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be in healthcare; my dreams came true when I was accepted into the nursing program at MCC. Having the opportunity to be involved in the care of my patients has furthered my passion for nursing and helping others. Returning to school can be difficult, especially when taking into consideration one’s tuition, books, nursing supplies, and other financial obligations. I thought it would take years for me to return to become a nurse. With this all said, I want to thank MCC for an opportunity that will forever have an impact on my future as a nurse. No words can explain my deep appreciation for your values to help students obtain their educational goals, and your belief in me to do well. I can assure you, that I will continue to excel in my coursework and give back to the community. ATEH WANGIA STUDENT, AAS NURSING
