The link to his complete database of reviews: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Bungalow/1204/films.htm At one time or another, after viewing a certain number of films, there is a tendency for those interested in the cinema to want to express their interest in the subject with quantifiable terms--to make lists ranking films based on preference or "greatness". Perhaps these evaluations represent a search for the most effective and artistic expressions in a still relatively young medium. Whether the intent be to educate or to sell videotapes, a few of these lists have been widely publicized such as Sight and Sound's international poll of the greatest films (taken once a decade) and the AFI's listing of the 100 best American films. Both of these show Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles and released in 1941, firmly positioned at the coveted number one spot, and its reputation shows no signs of waning. If Kane has now comfortably settled into the general title of "greatest film of all-time", how did it get there? Rather than merely accepting the work's ascribed masterpiece status, its filmmakers, production, structure, characters, themes, and influences all deserve study. One of the film's rare qualities that makes it so admired is its ability to yield considerable thematic ideas upon further inspection; almost every sequence or even shot seems to have significance beyond what the frame contains.

The study builds on Jonathan Rosenbaum's observation that Welles remains a "mythical and ideological creature" and a "site for the acting out of various fantasies." Referencing Marvin Carlson's The Haunted Stage and Joseph Roach's Cities of the Dead, I apply their insights to three plays that feature Welles as a pivotal character: Jason Sherman's It's All True, Austin Pendleton's Orson's Shadow, and the Naomi Iizuka-Anne Bogart collaboration, War of the Worlds. My central concern is to consider the ways we remember and stage Welles and, in light of Rosenbaum's insight, to also question the myths and ideologies those stagings act out. A corollary to my interrogation of Welles's stage figure as a site of memory is my conviction that the collective memory of Welles's life and work might be staged more usefully. The plays considered approach Welles from different perspectives. However, all – to varying degrees – assess negative judgments. Welles's legacy has been subject to conflicting interpretations, and the arbitration of his historical and remembered significance is a process with important consequences.

    Citizen Kane: The inadequacies of the ‘Rosebud’ ending Stephanie Gajewski Citizen Kane by Orson Welles presents a hollow ending to a complex film. While Rosebud exists as numerous entities throughout the film, as Kane’s last words, the film’s narrative structure and one of the two leading interpretations of the film, whether the ending is satisfying rests upon whether the viewer believes the reveal of Rosebud as Kane’s childhood sleigh ‘solves’ the ‘narrative’ of Citizen Kane. However, as Roger Ebert notes in his commentary on Citizen Kane, ‘you have to be an active viewer when you look at Citizen Kane’.1 When a viewer reads the film holistically and without the intention of interpreting Kane’s life, Rosebud is ultimately an artificial deduction that can only be made by the audience based on the narrative structure of the film, described by Pauline Kael as ‘gimmickry’.2 Therefore, the Rosebud ending to Citizen Kane cannot be satisfying and is hinging too much on too little for two primary reasons. Freedom of the press is a basic American right, to be sure—but it’s also a serious matter of public trust, not to be lightly invoked. Magazines handle such matters differently. By appearing once a week or, in many instances, just once a month, their corrections tend to be stale when they finally appear. They do get published, though, if only “for the record.” With books it’s another story. In the realm of nonfiction a given edition of a biography or a historical work may have one appearance only, extending over many years before its backlog “sells through.” A good while ago my book about San Simeon called Hearst’s Dream was denounced by a nervous bureaucrat; and thus its lengthy ban in the Hearst Castle gift shop. Denied its main market, the first printing of 5,000 copies took 17 years to deplete, from 1989 to 2006. There was no feasible way to make updates to all those shrink-wrapped bundles, each comprising 10 copies. Not until about 2005 was it realistic to make any factual repairs before a second printing would finally be ordered.
