Encounters with the Early Highpointers by Charles
SOME CLOSE (AND NOT SO CLOSE) ENCOUNTERS WITH THE EARLY HIGHPOINTERS BY CHARLES FERIS Many stories can be told of how we got our first inspiration to pursue this hobby of ours, this highpointing. We’ve been inspired in a hundred ways; mine arose during a period of boredom, while in college. Seeking something other than study, I took out a Rand McNally road atlas, and looked at a map of my native state of Illinois, noting the little red dot in the northwest corner of the state. Wow, something neat to do. So while the other kids were off to Florida, off to Charles Mound I went during spring break 1961. Then it hit me; I had already done Mt. Whitney the year before, so why not do all the states. Now I was really excited. The next few years saw me collecting 13 more highpoints in the Midwest and southeast. I went my merry way, never realizing that others might be crazy enough to be pursuing the very same project. At this point I was not aware of the tiny fraternity of early highpointers who were already years before me. I had no idea of the remarkable people I was about to meet. Then in August 1965 a Sierra Club friend of mine in Chicago told me about C. Rowland Stebbins. I had found a kindred soul, one who had already completed the 48. I phoned him immediately. Soon my wife and I were off on the four hour drive to Lansing, Michigan. We arrived to an expansive mansion on Moore’s River Drive atop a bluff overlooking the Grand River. -

12-Inch Alvan Clark Telescope Restoration: Summary of Research and Final Recommendations Deborah Culmer and Hannah Johnson September, 2011 Introduction The first telescope installed at Lick Observatory was a second-hand purchase, with the telescope and its optic made by the premier telescope makers of the time, Alvan Clark and Sons of Cambridge, MA. The dome that housed it was the first structure built on Mt. Hamilton, from bricks fired in a kiln on location. That dome still stands; and until the 1970’s, the 12-inch refracting telescope was in operation, but without its original driver clock and gears (replaced with an electronic drive, perhaps in the 1950’s). Since it was decommissioned, the 12-inch has been in storage. The Lick Instrument Lab has retrieved it, and it is currently on location at UC Santa Cruz in anticipation of total restoration. In the summer of 2011, a research project was launched to determine to what era and condition the telescope should be restored. In recent years, there has been great interest in historical restoration of Alvan Clark telescopes (and others, to be sure). As a result of that interest, we had a pool of organizations and institutions from which to glean information. Two we visited in person; many more we contacted via email and conference calls. Based on our research and interviews, we offer our recommendations on the restoration of this historically important telescope. 1. Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th, 2002 "For it is true that astronomy, from a popular standpoint, is handicapped by the inability of the average workman to own an expensive astronomical telescope. It is also true that if an amateur starts out to build a telescope just for fun he will find, before his labors are over, that he has become seriously interested in the wonderful mechanism of our universe. And finally there is understandably the stimulus of being able to unlock the mysteries of the heavens by a tool fashioned by one's own hand." Russell W. Porter, March 1923 -- Founder of Stellafane The Stellafane Convention is a gathering of amateur telescope makers. The Convention was started in 1926 to give amateur telescope makers an opportunity to gather, to show off their creations and teach each other telescope making and mirror grinding techniques. If you have made your own telescope, we strongly encourage you to display it in the telescope fields near the Pink Clubhouse. If you wish, you can enter it in the mechanical and/or optical competition. There are also mirror grinding and telescope making demonstrations, technical lectures on telescope making and the presentation of awards for telescope design and craftsmanship. Ifilillii SEPTEMBER, I938 PUBLISHED BY THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY OF BROWN UNIVERSITY JOHN HAY On the 8th day of October in the year 1838, John Hay was born in the pioneer town of Salem, Indiana. His mother, born in Assonet, Massachusetts, in 1803, was a Leonard and his maternal grandfather, David Augustus Leonard, had attended Brown Uni versity (then Rhode Island College) in the Class of 1792. This New England connection drew the youth, John Milton Hay, when of college age, to Brown. His subsequent career has placed him in the very highest esteem among the University's alumni. During October, from the 24th through the 30th, there will be an exhibition of John Hay memorabilia in the Harris Room of the Library. On the evening of October 26th the Friends of the Li brary will hold their October meeting in the Harris Room at eight o'clock and members will have an opportunity to view the exhibit. The exhibition will include examples of Hay's published and private works, autograph letters, pictures, and his college records. Early letters of Hay are extremely rare as most of them were addressed to his family and were subsequently destroyed. During the brief interval between his graduation from Brown and his departure for Washington to become Lincoln's private secretary, he suffered from, or perhaps we should say, indulged in, "Leonard Melancholy." This period it is hoped will be repre sented by copy No. 1 of Caroline Tichnor's book, A Poet in Exile, which has the original letters bound in. -

High Point, New Jersey – ‘09 High Point, New Jersey is located a few miles from the NJ-NY-PA tri-point. The summit is 1803 feet above sea level. It is a drive-up located inside of High Point State Park. At the top of the 220-foot structure, observers have a breathtaking view of the ridges of the Pocono Mountains toward the west, the Catskill Mountains to the north and the Wallkill River Valley in the southeast. 2010 STELLAFANE CONVENTION Beginner Talks “Tour of the Russell Porter Turret Telescope” by Brad Vietje and John Gallagher Friday, August 6th, 3:00 p.m. & Saturday, August 15th, 11:30 a.m. Meets at the Turret Telescope Located at the summit of Breezy Hill, immediately to the North of the Stellafane Pink Clubhouse, The Russell Porter Turret Telescope is one of three known “turret telescopes”. The primary advantage of this type of telescope is that the observers are inside of the observatory building, protected from the cold temperatures of long winter nights and biting mosquitoes of summer nights. Brad Vietje and John Gallagher, both members and past presidents of the Springfield Telescope Makers, will talk about the history of the Turret Telescope, demonstrate how the telescope is used and observe the Sun, if the weather permits and the Sun obliges by displaying some sunspots. “Solar System Walk” by Roger Williams Friday, August 6th, 4:15 p.m. & Saturday, August 7th, 12:30 p.m. Starts behind the Pink Clubhouse near the green shed To illustrate the vast size of outer space, the Springfield Telescope Makers have constructed a scale model of the solar system, based on the Sun being 12 inches in diameter. At that scale, the Earth would be approximately 1/10 of an inch in diameter and 107 feet from the Sun. Jupiter would be 1.2 inches in diameter and approximately 560 feet from the Sun. The “Solar System Walk” begins behind the Pink Clubhouse and proceeds down the road going towards the Stellafane camping area. At the appropriate distance, from the scale model of the Sun, there are stations with the appropriate planet, built to scale, and a short description of each planet. -
