ABSTRACT The Liberty-Orrington fault separates two tectonic terranes of widely different lithologies and metamorphic grades within the Coastal Lithotectonic Belt of Maine. While the juxtaposition of the sillimanite-bearing Passagassawakeag gneiss and the chlorite grade Bucksport Formation (turbidites) requires a fault between them, field evidence for, and an understanding of, the nature of the fault has hitherto been lacking. Although the Liberty-Orrington fault has previously been interpreted as a thrust, strike- slip, and/or normal fault, the most recent debate has been centered around two models of Acadian amalgamation involving thrusting of the Passagassawakeag terrane from the southeast vs. thrusting from beneath central Maine (from the northwest) (Osberg et al., 1998; Stewart et al., 1995).

Whittaker Maine Geological Survey, Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry 1 Passagassawakeag Rail Trail, Belfast Maine Geological Survey Introduction The Belfast (or Passagassawakeag or “Passy”) Rail Trail is a relatively new walking trail in the Belfast area. The old track and railroad ties were pulled up in the fall of 2014 and the trail was officially open for use by the summer of 2016. The former railroad bed follows the western bank of the Passagassawakeag River from Belfast in the south to City Point in the north, a distance of 2.2 miles. The trail affords excellent views of the river for much of its length, including a river crossing near the northern end of the trail, as well as opportunities to observe many facets of the area’s natural history. ABSTRACT This thesis describes the stratigraphy and structure of the Roach River syncline, in northwest Maine. The syncline lies southeast of and parallel to the Moose River synclinorium. Physiographically the region is part of the New England Upland; geologically it belongs to the northern Appalachians. The thesis area includes parts of the Ragged Lake, North East Carry, Moose- head Lake, and First Roach Pond quadrangles. Strongly folded Lower Paleozoic rocks are exposed in the area, and fossils of Silurian and Early Devonian age have been found in them. These stratified rocks have a composite thickness of 26,000 feet. The oldest units of Cambrian (?) or Ordovician (?) age includes slates, dark-colored quartzites, phyllites, and carbonate rocks, as well as diorite and diabase in intrusive bodies. During the Taconic orogeny, the area was deformed and eroded. Silurian and younger strata were then laid down in a subsiding area, the earliest deposits of Silurian age being red conglomerate of terrestrial origin.
