Scholar-Athlete Team representatives also demonstrated athletic achievement on the ice and have given back to the community and/or the campus though service opportunities. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed a full year at their school. Making up the 2014-15 NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team are Western Michigan sophomore defenseman Taylor Fleming, Colorado College junior forward Jared Hanson, Denver senior forward Larkin Jacobson, St. Cloud State junior forward Kalle Kossila, Minnesota Duluth senior forward Adam Krause, Omaha senior goalie Ryan Massa, North Dakota senior defenseman Nick Mattson and Miami junior goalie Jay Williams. Krause is the lone repeat selection to the Scholar-Athlete Team after also being on the inaugural team in 2013-14. The 2014-15 NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team combined for a 3.74 grade-point average with all eight members posting a GPA north of 3.6, including two above a 3.9. Three of the members are finance majors while three others are in business-related fields. Half of the team consists of seniors while three juniors and one sophomore complete the team. Half of the team is also forwards with two defensemen and two goaltenders. One member is a team captain, while two are active Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members, two more are Hobey Baker Award candidates and one is an NCAA Elite 89 Award winner for having the top GPA at the Frozen Four. Fleming, a business major, played in all 24 conference games for WMU and totaled five points while blocking 38 shots. He also earned NCHC Defenseman of the Week once during the season. Hanson is a molecular and cellular biology major who is a SAAC officer at CC and has tallied two goals and an assist this season. Jacobson appeared in 23 conference games while totaling three goals and five points for the Pioneers. He is a finance major with a near 4.0 GPA, who has volunteered at the Special Olympics and Colorado Children’s Hospital. Kossila, who majors in international busi- ness, played in all 24 conference games for SCSU this season while racking up four goals and 16 assists. He earned SCSU’s Outstanding Student-Ath- lete Award (McDonald President’s Award) last season. Krause, the captain for the Bulldogs, appeared in 18 conference games after an injury early in the season. The finance major notched three goals and seven points in conference play, while he is an active SAAC member and was also a Senior CLASS Award and Hockey Humanitarian Award candi- date. Massa, a business administration major, led the NCHC with a .933 save percentage in conference play and was second with a 2.12 GAA. Massa, Omaha’s only Hobey Baker Award candidate, was NCHC Player of the Month in October and has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Omaha Children’s Hospital. Mattson is a management major with a GPA north of 3.9, while he earned the NCAA Elite 89 Award at last year’s Frozen Four and was an Academic All-American in 2013-14. The Blackhawks draft pick is also a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award and played in 19 conference games this year, finishing fourth among defensemen with 15 points in conference play. Williams, also a Hobey Baker Award candidate, is a finance major and four-time NCHC Goalie of the Week, starting 16 conference games in net for Miami and leading the NCHC with a 2.12 GAA and two shut- outs in NCHC play this season. He is also active in the You Can Play Project. Along with the eight student-athletes on the Scholar-Athlete Team, a total of 97 NCHC student-athletes received Academic All-Conference rec- ognition for achieving a cumulative GPA above 3.0 and having completed a full year at their current institution. Freshmen are not included in this list, but those first-year student-athletes that finish with a 3.0 GPA or better at the end of the 2014-15 school year will be recognized this summer and added to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team. Athletic success and playing time are not criteria for this award. Denver led the way with 17 Academic All-Conference honorees, while St. Cloud State placed 14 student-athletes on the team. Miami and Omaha each had 13 student-athletes represented on the Academic All-Conference Team. NCAA Frozen Four NCHCHockey.com | NCHC.tv 13 NCHC Players of the Week/Month
