These areas provide the spectator with the chance to look down Into the car and get very close to the action. Chippy’s Bend RAC BRITISH HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP Having signalled his intentions last year with some superb performances in his 2800cc engined Pilbeam, young Guernsey driver Andy Priaulx has taken this year’s hillclimb championship by the scruff of the neck now he has a 4 litre engine installed. If the weather is suitable David Grace's record could be under considerable threat. David Grace at the moment is playing 'catch up' as has been the way in the last few seasons but his task is even more difficult this year with Andy seemingly able to dictate the pace. In equal third place Harewood expert Roy Lane will be looking for a win to bolster his championship chances as will Mark Colton who is gaining ground after his 'ofT at Barbon, but their task would appear enormous and the championship looks at the moment to be a two way fight between Andy and David. The eighteen strong field in Class L is the best entry that we have received at Harewood for some time and as the inter-class competition is extremely keen we look fonward to some scintillating on track action. RAC MSA HILLCLIMB LEADERS CHAMPIONSHIP Roger Moran in the Pilbeam MP62 has a healthy 16 point lead over second place, and previous Leaders Championship winner Tony Lambert's Ferrari while Tony is under threat from the Pilt>eam sports car of Jim Robinson. Jim is only 1 point adrift of Tony's Ferrari, similarly he has a 1 point lead over 4 drivers - Roger Thomas in the Class B works Westfield, Mark Coley in the Class H Jedi, Brian Robbins in the Class I Bewley and Peter Millington in the Class A strikingly liveried Clan Crusader. With class wins all important maybe all the above drivers will have to set new class records if they wish to improve their championship positions. HAREWOOD HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP Tony Mekwinski and Dennis Crompton look set for a season long battle in their quest for the Harewood Hillclimb Championship as both drivers are competing in the same class in their Escort and BMW respectively, it could boil down to who keeps his nerve the best or whose car is the more reliable. At the moment Tony has a two and a half point advantage and this could prove all important if we have any weather affected events before the championship is concluded. David Bailey is presently upholding the Formula Ford's honours in the championship, historically Formula Fords have always done well in the Harewood championship but with over 4 points adrift of the leader he would look to have an impossible task. As well as holding 4th place within the main championship, Alan Aucote's 1100cc Terrapin continues to lead the FTD series despite the attentions of larger engined cars within the championship. Although harking back to more gentlemanly days, competition is none the less extremely fierce amongst the MG 'T Register Cars. Dave Clewley drifting his MG TB round Quarry always extracts the maximum fi-om his pre-war car. In those near 40 years the event has changed out of all recognition from when we spent 5 days and nights travelling all around the country to this years event which is effectively over 3 days, with just a couple of stages in the dark for the big boys, spread over just half of Wales plus a short trip into Cheshire for a Mickey Mouse stage. Looking at the latest schedule I don’t envy the marshals on the Aberhirnant and Dyfnant stages as each stage is run twice, first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening so I guess they will be on duty for the best part of 17-18 hours. Well at least the MSA appears to have recognised the extraordinary dedication in the August Marshals Newsletter as I quote “We are looking at how best to provide support for everyone who is making the event run on these particular stages. And while we don't have an answer just yet, it is one of our top priorities”. Far be it for me to say but this sort of scheduling is completely unjustified and with a bit of thought could have been avoided.
