In looking at it today, it’s as fresh and new as when it was made in 1982. Cars may change, along with hairstyles and clothes … but the performances, particularly by the children and by E.T. himself, are so honest, timeless, and true, that the film absolutely qualifies to be ranked as a classic. What’s particularly special about today’s concert is that we’ll hear one of our great symphony orchestras, The Philadelphia Orchestra, performing the entire score live, along with the complete picture, sound effects, and dialogue.

But his parents insisted on a “sensible” career, and Chabrier spent several decades as a minor clerk in the Ministry of the Interior who dabbled in composition in his spare time. Then in the spring of 1882 Chabrier and his wife took a vacation trip to Spain, where – like so many other French composers – he was intoxicated by Spanish music. Back in France, he noted down several characteristic melodies and dance rhythms that he had heard in Andalusia, and from these he fashioned what he called a fantasia for solo piano. When the conductor Charles Lamoureux heard Chabrier play this piece, he urged him to orchestrate it. Lamoureux led the premiere of the orchestral version, now titled España, in Paris on November 4, 1883. It was an instant success, and Chabrier woke the next morning to find himself famous. Even now, 130 years later, España remains his best-known work.

Maurice Ravel (geb. Ciboure bei SaintJeandeLuz, 7. März 1875 - gest. Paris, 28.

Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875 in Ciboure, near the Spanish border and the Spanish Basque Country (Euskadi ), and even though he lived his entire life either in Paris or nearby, the musician remained very attached to his birthplace and to Basque folk dances like the zortzico (a dance that inspired the 1st movement of his Trio, composed in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1914, and the Chanson épique, 2nd of the three songs in Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, composed in 1932–1933) and the fandango that he often saw during the summer in the Place Louis XIV in Saint-Jean-de-Luz from 1902 on (Ravel also possessed in his library the collections of Basque folksongs by Sallaberry, 1870, and Santesteban, 1869–1890), and above all the Spanish folksongs (guajiras, habaneras, etc.) which his mother sang to him as lullabies.

Those reasons begin with my dissertation advisor, Roberta Freund Schwartz, a scholar of Renaissance music and the blues; she shepherded my project with such care and conviction that anyone not looking closely would think I was writing about Robert Johnson, not Ravel. Roberta encouraged me to strive for greater clarity by sloughing off the stylistic and scholarly accretions that cling to graduate students like barnacles. I am grateful for her patience and conscientious attention to my writing, as well as her sustained enthusiasm for this project; her dedication is inspiring.

  • Ravel's Miroirs
Ravel’s Miroirs : Text and Context Héloïse Marie Murdoch Research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music. Johannesburg, February, 2007 Abstract This research report examines Maurice Ravel’s piano pieces, Miroirs (1905), as texts. These five piano pieces draw on a wide range of sources and conventions across nearly two centuries and yet are utterly integrated in their expression. In the Miroirs, Ravel exhibits a fascinating meshing of historical and contemporary influences that range from Mozart to Chabrier and Fauré. The pieces are also interestingly and very personally related to their cultural and social contexts, in that each individual piece was dedicated to a member of the Apaches , a group of young artists and intellectuals residing in Paris of whom Ravel was himself one. The research examines the significance of the Miroirs both within Ravel’s own and the broader twentieth-century piano repertoire. ii Declaration I declare that this research report is my own unaided work. It is submitted for the degree of Master of Music in the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. It has not been submitted before for any other degree or examination in any other university. ____________________ 12 Day of February 2007. iii Preface and Acknowledgements Maurice Ravel is an intriguing composer; sometimes categorised as an Impressionist, sometimes a Neo-classicist and perhaps more often uncategorised. Although his older contemporary, Claude Debussy, is generally assessed as more important to the development of twentieth-century music and certainly the leader of French music at the turn of the century, Ravel nevertheless made a unique contribution.

It is extremely popular among pianists and is frequently studied and performed, both whole or in part, by pianists at various levels. The body of research available on this work primarily addresses its analytical aspects, but unfortunately little is said of the stylistic, interpretive, and technical challenges for the performer. Vlado Perlemuter and Hélène Jourdan-Morhange’s Ravel according to Ravel and Nancy Bricard’s introduction and commentary in the Alfred Edition are perhaps the most insightful references for this type of information. In my own study and research, however, it became clear to me that there was a need for a more detailed and imaginative analysis of this work–one that would not only address its analytical aspects but relate them as much as possible to issues of performance and interpretation as well.
