  • Exerpts from "A Closer Look at DTS"
DTS Article http://www.msbtech.com/dtsarticle.html HI FI NEWS & RECORD REVIEW February 1998 Exerpts from "A Closer Look at DTS" By: Malcolm Hawksford Momentum is gaining for a new high-definition digital audio standard and technical debate continues about what features this new medium should embody. In the pages of HFN/RR we were amongst the first to consider this topic back in 1995, where several key issues were identified. Since then, we have seen the launch of DVD-video (at least in the USA and Japan), which has already demonstrated superb performance capabilities, signaling the beginning of the end of Laserdisc video. The critics of course have already pointed to some minor defects, but then I can usually point to substantial defects in Laserdisc. I predicted that DVD, with MPEG-2 video encoding with the bit-rate elevated to approximately 8 Mbit/s and with a DTS soundtrack at around 1.4 Mbit/s will be a killer product and with the stamp of quality needed for home theater – that is, until higher-density discs allow recording of HDTV pictures. .. So why should the audio world wish to embrace a new audio standard? The answer is simply because it offers new opportunities, where the improvement in sound quality is only part of the story. For many, the main attraction is to usher in a paradigm shift from two-channel to multi-channel recording and sound reproduction; the potential improvements this brings are profound, enabling greater realism and sense of envelopment. For natural recordings, there is the space and atmosphere of the recording venue, while for the more creative or synthetic recordings there is a world of 3-Dimensional sound to explore.

  • 55 Years of Country-Rock, 1965-Present
55 years of country-rock, 1965-present: Creating a new American musical genre--how two immensely popular genres of music merged to create a timeless style, uniquely American in every aspect. This class will cover the historically significant country-rock movement which started in LA in 1965 and spread across the country, changing the musical landscape of popular music. We will explore how two roots-oriented genres-- country music and rock and roll--borrowed from each other and merged to create a new genre which has since spawned many sub-genres, each with its own unique approach to country-rock. We will look at several artists and their key albums, including: The Byrds, the Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Poco, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Steve Earle and others, as well as trends in instruments, arrangements and lyric-writing that made up the songs. • Scape of America in the Seventies, Casting the Social Mores of Those High-Flying Years Into Keenly Observed Songs That Everyone Came to Know by Heart
O RP E R F O RP MERS THE EAGLES SOARED ABOVE THE RAPIDLY CHANGING LAND- scape of America in the Seventies, casting the social mores of those high-flying years into keenly observed songs that everyone came to know by heart. In their flight across a decade that they defined as authoritatively as any band, the Eagles mirrored the larger changes tak ing place in society They began as wide-eyed innocents with a country- rock pedigree and ended as purveyors of grandiose, dark-themed albums chronicling a world of excess and seduction that had begun spinning seriously out of control. A Hollywood scriptwriter couldn’t have plotted out the parallel history of a band and the decade they inhabited any better than this: The Eagles were born in 1971 and died in 1980. The ultimate plot twist is that they were reborn in 1994 for anoth er go-round as the public demonstrated an insatiable appetite for their music and messages. (LThe stats on the Eagles are hugely impressive. A best-of collection, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has the distinction of being the second biggest-selling album of all time, having sold in excess of twenty-four million copies to date. It was also, The Eagles, 1979: Glenn incidentally, the first album ever to be certified plat Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Don Felder, Joe inum (one million sold) by the Recording Industry Walsh (from left) Association of America, which introduced that classification in 1976. How complete was the Eagles’ conquest of the Seventies, particularly the latter half of the decade? Consider that they released four consecu tive Number One albums between 1975 and 1979 - One o f These Nights, B Y P A R K E P U T 1 R B AU G lü Their Greatest Hits, Hotel California and The Long Run - which collectively topped Billboards album chart for twenty-seven weeks.

  • Linn Lounge Presents the Eagles
Linn Lounge presents the Eagles Tonight we’ll be listening to the Eagles in the highest quality available on a Linn network music system, including with a few tracks in Studio Master. A Studio Master music download is the highest quality music file available anywhere. It allows you the listener to hear the music exactly as it was recorded, before it was altered to fit on a CD or squashed down to MP3 size. So sit back and relax as you we uncover the life, loves and inspiraqtions of America’s favourite country rockers. Experiencing success beyond their wildest imaginations, The Eagles invented ‘Life in the Fast Lane’: partying hard, throwing TVs out of windows, and all the while still producing carefully crafted tracks full of finely-honed harmonies. ‘Rescue Me’ - Linda Ronstadt SPOTIFY In their earliest formation, The Eagles began as the nameless backing band for American sweetheart Linda Ronstadt – a popular country, folk singer. After completing a whirlwind tour across America during the summer of 1971 and recording on her 1972 self titled album, Don Henely, Glen Frey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner had caught a taste for fame and desired to embark on their own Rock & Roll adventure. With Linda’s blessing, the four lads formed a band of their own – seeking to produce music that encapsulated their original country rock sound. Henley was on drums and vocals, Frey sang and played guitar and keyboard, Leadon laid down the lead guitar role and Meisner filled in the bass. Soon they were signed to Asylum Records, a fledgling music label that had been recently started by David Geffen.

  • Elliot Scheiner Recording the Eagles Live for 5.1
Elliot Scheiner Recording The Eagles Live for 5.1 Elliot Scheiner (above) in the vintage Neve-based ABC OB van. (Left) The Eagles at work on stage at the Rod Laver Arena. Hotel Victoria Christopher Holder: Can you give me a brief synopsis of what’s occurring here, Elliot? Elliot Scheiner: For a while now, the band’s been planning a follow-up DVD to Hell Freezes Over. Once those plans were made known, NBC in The States got involved and wanted a package they could televise. So what we’re doing is recording three shows in Melbourne. While we’re recording I’m supplying a stereo mix to the vision guys so they have something they can use to make editing decisions from footage over the three nights. CH: Why Melbourne of all places? ES: The band loves it down here. The Eagles are doing an extensive Asian tour and this is an English-speaking country, so it’s easier to work. But fundamentally, they love it here. There’s a big fan base so we know we’ll get a great audience reaction for the recordings. The other consideration is that the Rod Laver Arena is small enough to warrant three nights. We really needed a location that allowed us to set up and get those nights under our belt so we had choices down the line when it came to editing up the footage. CH: And when it comes time to piece the ‘best bits’ together what are the choices based on? ES: The vocal performances. The band plays consistently great every night so that’s less of a concern – it always comes down to When the Eagles decided a follow up to their hugely successful ‘Hell Freezes Over’ the vocal performances.

  • HOME THEATER for Muslc LOVERS
HOME THEATER FOR MUSlC LOVERS The Vandersteen Audio "Home Theater" Speaker System TOM MIILLER T H E A U D I O A D V E N T U R E Spring 1995 The sonic struggle between home theater enthusiasts and music loving audiophiles resembles nothing so much as the battle of sexes -videophiles are from Mars, audiophiles are from Venus. Should you optimize your sound system for music or movies? Is there a difference? Most people think there is and many believe the only solution is two systems. Richard Vandersteen, however, thinks that's hogwash. He believes that video and audio sound systems can and must coexist successfully in a "coed" environment and, to support the point, offers a "home theater" system comprised of mixed Vandersteen speakers - some designed for music, some for home theater. All with sonic accuracy in mind. HOW GOOD CAN THIS MARRIAGE BE The answer to this question arrived in some seriously sized boxes that did not have serious price tags attached. Mind you, the Vandersteen system is not cheap or even inexpensive - it is, however, a great value in high performance sound reproduction. The system starts with the $2,595 Vandersteen Model 3As as the main speakers. The Model 3A is a full range loudspeaker, a "music first" design that features a 1- inch metal tweeter, a 4.5-inch midrange driver, an 8-inch bass driver and a 10- inch woofer that is an active acoustic coupler. All packed into a slim cabinet 48 inches tall by 16 inches wide and 10.75 inches deep, weighing in at a hefty but manageable 98 pounds.
