Welcome to the Boys and Girls Varsity Water Polo Team. You are part of Venice AND Southwest Florida History! Introduction to Water Polo Welcome to the fastest growing sport in America. College scholarship opportunities are exploding, and in 2017, 15 NCAA schools came to recruit 55 Juniors and Seniors at the first annual Florida Combine. Total athlete participation is still small compared with other sports (45,000 in water polo vs. 1 million lacrosse or 7 million baseball players). You will have access to college coaches, high- level development programs like USA Water Polo’s Olympic Development Program, and ample playing time to learn and have fun. The hardest part about playing is deciding to get in the pool! Water polo is easy to learn and requires dedication to fitness and skills practice. Games are spectator-friendly, exciting, and last about an hour. It’s a team sport experience that complements a swimming background or other ball sport knowledge. Most water polo players and families become loyal fans, coaches, or supporters and remain part of the sport for a lifetime.

Away Games: I know we have 3 away tournaments in Orlando, Gainesville, and Miami. I understand there is no transportation provided by the school. I understand an overnight stay will be required. If the team does not execute the fundraising available, I may need to cover part of the hotel cost. I will be responsible for my meals and incidentals. (Team will coordinate as able.) I will communicate travel needs/plans with our team travel coordinator (Amanda Stoneburner) and complete paperwork as requested before each tournament. How to Join USA Water Polo Each water polo athlete must have an active bronze membership or above with USA Water Polo. USAWP is our insurance provider as required by the Sarasota School District. The USAWP membership also gives you other benefits and eligibility for non-FHSAA water polo tournaments, events, and practices.
Steps 1. Go to www.usawaterpolo.org 2. Click the “JOIN” link at the top of the page in yellow. 3. If you have a current or previous (e.g. trial) membership, click LOGIN to manage your membership. 4. Choose Bronze Athlete (2018 pricing = $40). You can always upgrade if needed. 5. Click Sign Up button. 6. Club affiliation: o Choose your state (Florida) o Select Southwest Florida Water Polo Foundation (#31651) 7. Practice Schedule • 1/22/2018: First Day of Practice. Parent/athlete meeting at 5pm @ VHS pool. • 4/12/2018: Last Day of Practice. • Monday – Friday**: Practices @ Venice High pool from 3:15-5:15. Our team fundraisers are organized to pay for travel expenses, t-shirts, caps, equipment, etc. and to lead to a self-sustaining program we can all be proud of!
Team Sponsorship Drive Purpose: To engage personal, school, and local contacts/relationships to build community support for a long-term, sustainable water polo program at Venice High. Dates: 1/22 – Complete Sponsor Worksheet and coordinate with Amanda Stoneburner. 1/22 – 2/2 – Reach out to your personal and school/local contacts using the Fundraiser Letter. 2/2 – Finalize donation levels with Sponsors. 2/5 – Print and hang banners. Chocolate Sale Purpose: To provide an easy way for athletes to contribute to our team needs. Dates: 1/26 – Terri Porter/Scout Lead will distribute chocolate bars at the end of practice and as needed. Bring money and get more bars after practices. 1/29 – 2/2 – Chocolate Sale at VHS, other locations ongoing until we run out. Goals: 1. Sell all 620 Hershey’s brand chocolate bars for $1/each. 2. $620 raised. Terri Porter ([email protected], 360-202-7619) is coordinating this fundraiser, with Scout Lead ([email protected], 941-716-5560) assisting. Please contact them with questions or to get a box to sell.
Applebee’s Breakfast Purpose: An all-team awareness and fundraising project with big potential and short time commitment. Dates: 2/2 – Ticket distribution. 2/3 – All-team ticket sales at VHS Parade and Picnic. 2/3 – 3/2 – Sell tickets. Minimum 10 tickets per athlete. 3/3 – 7:30AM: Athletes arrive at Applebee’s, 8AM – 10AM Breakfast Goals: 1. 20 tickets sold per athlete (10 is the minimum). 2. $4,000 profit. Varsity Letter Requirements Earning a Varsity Letter in any sport indicates a certain level of achievement. To earn a Varsity Letter in Boy’s and Girl’s Water Polo at Venice High School, team members will need to meet the following requirements:
✓ Maintain good athletic and academic standing, complete the season, and remain eligible academically. ✓ Be of good character, a teammate, and team player. ✓ Attend all practices, games, team events, and fundraisers unless excused by the coach in advance. ✓ Contribute to the team’s success. ✓ Letters may also be given at the coach’s discretion.
