Drawing & Lettering DRAWING & LETTERING DRAWI N G & LETTERING A century of fine pen-making began in 1899, when the C. Howard Hunt Pen Company began manufacturing and distributing steel pens. In those days, drawing and lettering was laborious and time consuming due to the only available tools—small brushes and fine pens. Looking for a method to improve the speed of this work, Speedball® joined forces with master letterers Ross F. George and William Hugh Gordon in 1913 to contrive and perfect a nib with a reservoir. It was nicknamed “Speedball” because of the efficiency of the pen, which cut working time in half. Since that time, the Speedball name has become synonymous with high-quality lettering pens. Anatomy of a Nib Most nibs are firm nibs. Shown above is a typical firm nib, with its parts called out. Learn the right names for the parts of a nib so that everyone will be talking the same language. Most especially, remember that a nib, just like a person, has a left side and a right side. Left and right always refer to the sides of the nib as shown here. (When you are looking at the underside of a nib, its right tine is to your left.)
