Oral History of Grant Saviers Interviewed by: Tom Gardner Recorded: May 17, 2011 Mountain View, California CHM Reference number: X6162.2011 © 2011 Computer History Museum Oral History of Grant Saviers [0:00:00]1 Gardner: I'm Tom Gardner, a volunteer with the Storage Special Interest Group at the Computer History Museum, and this morning I'm here with Grant Saviers, to mainly cover Grant's remarkable history at Digital Equipment Corporation. Probably a good time for the prisoner shot. Saviers: Right, an original sign from DEC, when it was a 6,000 square foot operation at Building 12 of the Mill [DEC Maynard MA facility]. Of course, once you’ve been at DEC, you're always a DEC-ie, so I saved this when I left. Gardner: Grant has a long career in the computer industry, long time at DEC, and then with Adaptec. We'll probably not get to Adaptec in this recording session, we'll leave that for later, and we probably will not cover all of Grant's career, focusing today mainly on the storage aspects of Grant's career. Grant, tell us about your early background, where you grew up. Saviers: Well, I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and my dad was learning to run a machine gun, so he could go off to Europe and fight in World War II, and I grew up as the only child in a family which was not a technical family, my dad was an accountant, my mother was a housewife, and at some early age, I got interested in technology, you know, the kids' chemistry set, how to blow up things, and things like that, and I got into electronics via ham radio, and that was when I was 13 years old. -

Tape Storage – an introduction Popular perception of tape storage is that of an old and obsolete technology. It is the oldest storage technology still in use today. There are some benefits to tape storage in comparison to hard disk based storage that give reason to the continued development of the technology. Some of those are for example: • No power needed to preserve data (HDDs are similar in this regard but are rarely used as offline media due to portability reasons) • Data density (more data can be fit within the same volume) • Portability (tape cartridges can be easily transported – e.g. to secure locations geographically apart from the backed‐up data center) • Cost per stored Byte is lower Source: http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2013/09/information‐storage Image [1]: http://cdn.static‐economist.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/full‐ width/images/2013/09/blogs/babbage/20130928_stp504.jpg Hierarchical Storage Management Tape storage is located at the bottom of the hierarchical storage model. Storage is always a trade‐off between cost, capacity, durability and performance. The decision which technology to use is based on weighing those factors against each other. Small, expensive, volatile and very fast memories like CPU registers and caches which range up to a couple of Mbytes on one side of the spectrum versus relatively cheap, and comparatively slow non‐volatile HDDs and tape‐based storage on the other side.
