Lou tells you, “What a difference a day earned by Lou Nimnicht and Steve makes! On Monday we needed a very Watson in Portage on June 25 strong final round against one of the 74.31% better pairs in the room to hit 50%. This 70 percenter was unusual in that we scored just below 52% against three pairs and a littlemore than 83% against the other 5 pairs. One of the highlights was Steve going 1 down in 6 diamonds to tie for top!” Steve writes — With our outstanding director, Wayne, having returned to take control at the helm and Barbara having organized a simultaneous four-table novice/intermediate game while also pro- viding the pizza along with other goodies, it all was conducive to exerting a favor- able influence upon our play. We respond very well to favorable influences, parti- cularly “gifts”.

Carolyn and Yuan earned 11.57 masterpoints! What a magnificent showing! Carolyn comments — I like to play with Yuan because his bidding is so simple and easy to understand. Therefore, we almost always bid to the right contract. Yuan, too, was overjoyed at the unexpected out- come. He added — Carolyn is a very pleasant per- son to play bridge with. We play a simple system with very little conventions, and we find the best contract almost all of the time. That makes , win or lose, our bridge game very enjoyable. Thank you, Carolyn!

Don Valiska and Mike Devine were the winners of 77.50% this fantastic percentage — at a Tuesday afternoon game at South Suburban Bridge Center. Unfortu- nately, their names will not be published in the Bridge Bulletin since there were less than 5 tables in play. Another unfortunately — Mike is extremely busy and is not able to find the time during these several weeks to write of his opinion of the game. However, here is Don’s commentary — Mike and I have been playing regularly for a month or two on Tuesday afternoon in Lynwood, and we are having a pretty good time. We are usually on the same page, but we are still learning each other’s styles. The day of our 77.5% game we had the last sit out and left before the game was completed. On the way out, we commented to each other that we really didn’t do anything terrible, but nothing great either — just a good solid game. When we came back to play that evening (this time with different partners), we were really surprised by our score in the afternoon. Hopefully, we will continue learning from each other and having fun times.

Congratulations to Dave Bigler on his meteoric rise to Gold Life Master — having been awarded this prestigious recognition for acquiring 2500 master- points! It has been an arduous, though delightful, adventure to reach this sig- nificant milestone. Here are Dave’s reminisces — Wayne made it a goal to help me reach Gold Life Master status. His dedication to bridge and good nature are amazing. I was determined to take lots of time off and then along came “The Longest Day”. I couldn’t say no. With Chuck Briggs as a mentor, and Laverne, Wayne and Yuan as partners, I got so much more than I deserved from . John Chmielowiec, Bob Kellstrom, Jim O’Connell, Joe Chin and Howie Schmid were always teaching, and I was always listening. Lou Nimnicht took me to an even higher level. Hilda Connor and Dolores Gerdes helped me tone down my attitude when I needed it. While teaching three years at Maria Reiner Center in Hobart and three more years at Briar Ridge on Friday and Wednesday, I met many new people. At every dupli- cate game, I have a room of friends. How can you walk away from that?

The first time that I played with Dave I could see that he had good card sense. We went to the Chicago National and won an overall 299 event. We then placed second in the Swiss team event with Wayne and Laverne. Dave was then hooked on duplicate bridge. We went on to play many enjoyable games and together. Dave has gone on to play with many different partners showing his ability to play with different person- alities and to adapt to different bidding conventions. I would like to congratulate him on his latest achievement — GOLD LIFE MASTER! ~ Chuck Briggs Dave and I go way back and have a lot of things in common. We both went to Hobart High School and followed the Brickie’s great ten-year football run. We got to know each other better at Indiana University Northwest while socializing between classes playing bridge — and sometimes we just had to miss some of those classes to play bridge. After graduating from IU, we both spent over thirty years working for U.S. Steel before getting our release papers to continue doing what we really enjoy doing — playing bridge. Dave and I try to play once a week, as well as some tournaments along with our friends — Yuan Hsu and my cousin, Laverne Niksch. Having Dave as a partner or on our team is always a pleasure. We all know Dave’s dedication to bridge and fellow bridge players. Dave — Congratulations on achieving your GOLD LIFE MASTER! You earned it and you deserve it. Thanks for letting me be a small part of this journey. ~ Wayne Carpenter Kudos to Dave for achieving this milestone. I’ve known Dave since I retired 12+ years ago and began to play in Indiana. Although we have not partnered that often over the years, we have developed a friendship that involved families, politics and life, in general. In addition to being a fine player, Dave has given his all to the community at large — including countless bridge lessons (always free) at various venues. His Life Master status is truly golden. ~ Lou Nimnicht Dave is not only an excellent bridge player, but also a very nice person. One thing very special about Dave is that he always takes care of new players. He did that for me when I first joined our club. He taught me a lot of new tricks and conventions. He took me to many tournaments and helped me get my Life Master status. Thanks, Dave, and congratulations on your gold! ~ Yuan Hsu Congratulations, Dave! Gold Life Master! Quite an accomplishment! I met Dave a few years ago when he was teaching bridge at the Hobart Senior Center. Not only is he a wonderful instructor, but he is generous with his time and expertise. Any time that I need help or have a question about bridge, he is willing to help out. Dave is also a great partner. He really understands the game and is fun to play with. ~ Mary Kocevar When Wayne and I started going to bridge tournaments, we usually played in Swiss team events. Our partners were usually Dave Bigler and Chuck Briggs, We did very well. This was how we got most of our Gold points. Our biggest haul was in Chicago. It helped that we were C players and often got A and B points. I have probably played with Dave about 10 times. He is a great player and a gentleman, and I wish him more bridge luck in the future. ~ Laverne Niksch The first time I met Dave was at a local Bridge-O-Rama game. He was just a friendly guy who played bridge — that’s all I knew about him. Talk about a dark horse! I have watched Dave over the years and his special talent is that he can play well with everybody— no matter what system — it may be a beginner or a top player. His way of teaching has helped us all. Congratulations, Dave — a true Gold Life Master! ~ Trudi McKamey

Dave has offered a multitude of lessons throughout the years — whenever and wherever— all without remuneration. He oftentimes comes to the game with bags of food, also without remuneration — but with gratitude from us. He signed up as a “pro” to help increase Alzheimer’s donations. Nine players signed up to play with him, and he accepted them all. In fact, he doubled their games with him (2 for the price of 1), and he collected $240 for Alzheimer’s. He is willing (or more so, he is enthusiastic) to partner with new players to the game — no matter how elemental their skill level is — and those newbies leave having had a successful experience. This tribute to Dave is not just having accumulated points, but in giving back to the betterment of bridge in our locality and, consequently, good for the game ACBL-wide. His contributions are GOLDEN! 70.24% Rich and Sally Will, a partnership which has a high degree of understanding each other’s bidding and signals (and using their highly-developed intuition) have reached another 70%+ game — this time on a Wednesday in Valparaiso. Sally says. “Since our retirement Rich and I have worked on play- ing duplicate together. Rich is a great player both on offense and defense.” Rich adds, “Sally has always been an excellent player. She has taught me to be more aggressive, and now our games really complement each other.” Congratulations!

Gloria Georger lives primarily in Rochester, MN, but also has a house in Lowell (from when she worked in the area). She used to run the Ford Motor Co. as plant manager in Chicago Heights. After running that very large plant, she then moved to Rochester where she ran five plants for Osh Kosh Trucks, where they made garbage trucks and concrete mixers. Gloria’s mom taught her bridge at the kitchen table, but she didn’t play bridge for 35 years. After she retired, she is back into it. She has been a student of the game since she began playing again — reading and attending tournaments. She loves the game and is greatly addicted to it. She has about 750 masterpoints in her third year of playing. She plays a lot and plays with people who have expertise. She became a Life Master last May. Gloria played in the Calumet Township and Highland games. She characterized these bridge clubs as nice and well-operated. She found the people to be genuine and very congenial.

Conrad Staudacher passed away. His visitation will be on Friday, July 19 from 4:00-6:00 at Tews-Ryan Funeral Home in Homewood. Conrad enjoyed playing bridge (almost as much as dancing) and has played with most of us as a partner. His big disappointment was that he was never

Trudi comments — When I started playing duplicate, there were no 299er games, so I began playing against Howard Schmid, Bob Kellstrom, Jim O’Connell, etc. — You can guess the rest. Over time better players gave me a chance, and I was on my journey to becoming a Ruby Life Master. I was helped along by Yuan Hsu, Barbara Walczak, Pat Mikuta, Bob Porter, Carolyn Potasnik and many more. Anna Urick introduced me to the 2 over 1 system, and I still try to get the finer points of bidding. Lynne Kostopoulos encouraged me to go to tournaments to get enough gold points. As it happened — Charlie Abernethy, Anna Urick and I got the gold we needed to become Life Masters at the tourna- ment in Champaign. I love the game. I try to improve and I love my bridge family. From Yuan Hsu — Playing bridge with such a nice and pretty lady like Trudi is truly a joyful experience. She is not only a good bridge player, but also a very kind and wonderful human being. Trudi and I are partners twice a month, and I want to thank her for being so nice to me all these times and who never complains about my bridge playing or behaviors. Thank you, Trudi, and sincere congratulations on your new achievement! From Pat Mikuta — I enjoy playing with Trudi very much — she is a true competitor. We play a couple of times per month and and the team game and the “flings” with Alan and Arlyne Filler. Congratulations on your achievement! It is well deserved. From Bob Porter — Congratulations, Trudi, on achieving Ruby Life Master. Your achievement is proof of your commitment, dedi- cation and drive for excellence at the bridge table. Your success also comes from your continual lead for accurate bidding and improvement in best play of each hand. Trudi continues to enjoy playing with several partners, providing refreshments at special club events, traveling to many top- level tournaments — as well as world traveler with destinations including Austria and Iceland. We have partnered for the last seven plus years. Again, congratulations, Trudi, on achieving Ruby Life Master! All the best — from Bob! CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! Dan Spain and Lou Nimnicht were the triumphantly suc- cessful winners in a Tuesday afternoon game — 18.75% 73.96% higher than the second place pair — Yippee ki-yay! Lou says that perhaps he was extra motivated after racking up a 43% game on Monday. This game was smooth sailing from the first board. Dan was especially insightful with his bidding, declarer play and defense. Incredibly they bid no slams en route to this big game. Dan surmised that Lou made some good guesses. Alan Yngve has become a Silver Life Master — 1000 masterpoints — his name will probably appear in the September issue of the Bridge Bulletin. As Jim 9 mentions farther down and what is most impres- sive, is that as the director he most often partners with players whose skills are of lower level than his, and somehow brings out the best in them. Alan shares his thoughts with you —The other day I picked up this hand as dealer (both vulnerable) K T 7 4 2 — — K T 9 8 7 6 4 2. According to some — a four-loser hand! What action would you take with this hand? I have some stories, but let’s push that to “in person” bridge discussions. So — I seem to have reached 1000 masterpoints. It was bound to happen since they are only additive. Also — interesting — because I’m currently in a serious slump. I’ve made some poor decisions (or at least ones that don’t work out) that have sent me back “to the books”. It seems that I need to do this with some regularity to right my sometimes tilted ship, but I enjoy the study — so it is not wasted time. I hope all the many players I have sat with enjoyed their time at the bridge table with me. I remember all of you, but admit that you are too numerous to list! Now to see if I can earn that “next” masterpoint — maybe with you!

Alan — to a fine player, teacher and director! Sorry that I don’t get to play with you too often, but I appreciate that you take me out of my comfort zone. That’s exactly what I need to improve my game. Congratulations on hitting the SILVER mark! ~ Trudi McKamey Alan is my Lafayette bridge partner and being the modest fellow that he is, I had no idea that he recently made Silver Life Master until I was asked to write something. Congratulations, Alan! Those who know Alan know that he has developed an interesting bidding scheme he calls Demand Minor. The first time I played the system I was anxious to get it right. As luck would have it, we had no call to use the system until the last table of the evening against a well-known pair of senior life masters. One of our opponents became agitated with our bidding — not undertstanding it and believing he was being taken. (Now I am very anxious.) Finally in a fit of pique he challenged Alan by asking if Alan’s system wasn’t just another name for the Montreal Relay. Alan with a hint of a smile simply answered that it was a little similar — but only better! Modesty only goes so far. Don’t mess with Alan. ~ L’Shalom, John Polles Alan is one of the most knowledgeable bridge players that I’ve ever met. He explains bridge concepts and systems very clearly. His system on Demand Minors is, by far, the best system I have ever used. It is so deceptive to the opponents, and it puts pressure on them to . He is tolerant of mistakes I make, which helps me to concentrate more and also not to make that mistake again. Alan is also a very good chauffeur in his well-designed car. Congratulations to an extremely talented player! ~ Mike Brissette Congrats to Alan for reaching Silver Life Master — a remarkable feat, considering that he often just directs or plays with all levels of partners. I can say that his bidding is accurate and reliable, and this is reflected in his great play of the cards. I enjoy being his partner! ~ Jim Angell
