Football IS Coming Home! on Sunday (11 July 2021) England Will Be Playing Italy in the Final of the Euros Football Tournament at Wembley Stadium
Football IS coming home! On Sunday (11 July 2021) England will be playing Italy in the final of the Euros football tournament at Wembley Stadium. There is nowhere else in our country more appropriate for this historic match, but why is that? 1. Wembley Stadium and its new steps, April 2021. (Photo by Philip Grant) One hundred years ago, when the British Empire Exhibition was being planned, the then Prince of Wales, who was President of its organising committee, wanted it to include ‘a great national sports ground’. His wish was granted, and the giant reinforced concrete Empire Stadium, with its iconic twin towers, was built in just 300 days. It hosted the FA Cup final in April 1923, and a year later its first England international football match, against Scotland (a 1-1 draw). 2. The Empire Stadium at Wembley in 1924. (Image from the Wembley History Society Colln. at Brent Archives) The long-term future of the stadium was in doubt, until it was saved from demolition in 1927 by Arthur Elvin. He ensured that annual events, like the FA Cup and Rugby League Challenge Cup finals were popular days out for spectators, as well as making the stadium pay its way with regular greyhound and speedway racing meetings. Although cup finals made the stadium famous in this country, the 1948 Olympic Games put Wembley on the world map. The Olympic football final at Wembley saw Sweden beating Yugoslavia 3-1, with Denmark taking the bronze medal after a 5-3 victory over Great Britain. 3. RONALDO MOST HATED FOOTBALLER in the PREMIERSHIP Submitted By: 10 Yetis PR and Marketing Tuesday, 20 January 2009
RONALDO MOST HATED FOOTBALLER IN THE PREMIERSHIP Submitted by: 10 Yetis PR and Marketing Tuesday, 20 January 2009 A study of over 2500 football fans has found that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is the most hated football player in the Barclays Premiership, despite winning Fifa’s World Player of the Year award and having had a successful season to date. A recent survey asked 2,614 UK-based football fans the multiple answer question, “Which players do you dislike the most in the Barclays Premiership?” Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo topped the poll, taking 48% of the votes. Ronaldo has been the standout recipient of world awards this season, being the current holder of the Ballon d'Or and the reigning FIFPro World Player of the Year, PFA and FWA Player of the Year, but his success in the awards has done little for his public standing, with 69% of fans claiming that he is ‘full of himself’, according to the survey commissioned by sports TV site www.Wheresthematch.com. Senegalese Sunderland striker El-Hadji Diouf came second in the poll of most hated footballers, followed by Newcastle United midfielder and England one-cap Joey Barton, best known publicly for his stint in prison for assault. When asked, “What makes a bad player?”, fans were split. ‘Foul play’ was noted as the main reason with 31%, followed closely by ‘arrogance’, with 28%. ‘Diving’ came in at third, with 19%. ‘Off-field behaviour’ was seventh, with 7% of the votes. There was representation in the survey of every Premiership team. -

Frontier Economics Bulletin Water Energy Environment Retailing Transport Financial services Healthcare Telecoms Media Post Competition policy Policy analysis and design Regulation Strategy Contract design and evaluation Dispute support services Market design and auctions FEBRUARY 2014 Is Bale the Real deal? THE VALUE OF TOP FOOTBALL PLAYERS The 2013 summer transfer window saw Gareth Bale become the most expensive football player in the world, when he left Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid – for a record fee of more than £80m. An analysis of player valuations conducted by Frontier suggests that – even at the time of the deal – Bale’s footballing skills were worth just £66m. So did Real Madrid pay too much for its latest “Galáctico” – or wasn’t it all about the game? Football has long dominated the sports pages of European newspapers, but these days it can increasingly be found in the business pages as well. Europe’s largest clubs are collectively worth billions. Some, such as Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, are now publicly-listed companies. The performance – or underperformance – of star signings can send clubs zinging up and down the financial charts as well as the football leagues. 2 Frontier Economics | February 2014 But how confident can clubs be that they are getting their money’s worth, when they sign expensive new players? To help address this question, Frontier has developed an economic model that estimates the value of players on the basis of their proven football skills, i.e. their performance so far. The model uses data collected from all transfers over £1m in the English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga – two of Europe’s richest leagues – over the past few seasons. -
You Go Ahead, Cause Its Making Me Laugh... by Fausto Sala - Vice President FISSC
Year Number Jan - Mar 2 1 2012 You go ahead, cause its making me laugh... by Fausto Sala - Vice President FISSC “Olimpico” stadium in Rome, Sunday 5 February 2012. Around the 20 minute of the first half of Roma-Inter in South stand appeared a banner which read: “All at 15: the nature of things, by nature force”. As everybody knows the match was scheduled to be played on Saturday at 20.45, then anticipated at 15 and at last moved at the same time on Sunday, in contemporary with all other matches in serie A as the tradition was back in the past. Thus the roman fans wanted to underline this fact and their consent for the traditional shcedule of matches, remarking as only the snow emergency had forced the hands of those in command to revert to old habits of italian football fans. We can repeat until boredom that playing at night in the coldest days of the year is madness. Yet since January 18 up to February 5, between league and national cup, 21 matches at night have been programmed and out of these 19 in the north between Bergamo, Milan, Torino or Novara. But you think that who decides does not know such facts? But more the Lega is criticised, and more who guides the Lega continues to be bend to the will of the television networks who now have absolute power to decide the time in which games are playes, having tv rights now constitute the main income for the clubs. Thus the only concern of the Lega in these last seasons, whose president Maurizio Beretta has resigned since March of last year since he now passed to a top managerial post within UniCredit, was to see how to divide between the clubs the income coming from these rights with the consequent effect of half-empty stadiums to the benefit of sitting in cosy armchairs and sofas at home. -
