The Doctor of Philosophy in Health Science is designed to • provide a means of Ph.D. completion for working health care professionals currently at the master’s and professional doctoral degree levels • increase opportunities for health practitioners to earn terminal degrees in the field of health science with a core focus in research • prepare graduates to function both independently and interdependently within the clinical and nonclinical research environment • prepare graduates for advanced development of new knowledge in their fields of expertise The program challenges students to • examine the current state of health care • apply sophisticated knowledge of research design, biostatistics, and epidemiology to the literature of their core disciplines • initiate the design and follow-up mechanisms for research in health care Professor-driven and student-centered online course delivery is coupled with a research practicum; a minimum of two one-week, on-campus institutes; a comprehensive exam- ination; and a dissertation with an oral defense. Students may obtain instruction through the NSU Student Microcomputer Laboratory, the Health Science Online Orientation, or other training facilities. Upon admission, minimum computer requirements can be found at nova.edu /publications/it-standards. *strongly suggested 6 | Ph.D. in Health Science TRANSFER CREDITS Students matriculated into the Ph.D. program may petition for a transfer of credits. These credits can be transferred from doctoral courses taken at regionally accredited colleges or universities. All courses to be transferred must be substantially equivalent to courses taught in the program, as determined by the program director and appropriate faculty members. A student who wishes to have a course taken at another institution reviewed for transfer credit must submit a copy of the course syllabus to the program office. Each transfer credit petition will be reviewed on an individual basis. PROVISIONAL ACCEPTANCE Students are provisionally admitted to a degree-seeking program based on a review of unofficial transcripts or other specific program admission requirements. However, this admission includes a condition that final and official transcripts, documents, and requirements must be received within 90 calendar days from matriculation. If these final and official transcripts, documents, and/or requirements are not received by that time, the student will not be allowed to continue class attendance. Financial aid will not be disbursed to a provisional/conditional student until he or she has been fully admitted as a regular student (all admissions requirements have been approved by the college/pro- gram admissions office). Students who have an unpaid balance 30 days from the start of the term will be assessed a $100 late fee. Anthony Andrews is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has his own private practice, located in Charlotte, NC. Anthony is a North Carolina A&T alum who graduated with his MS in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2014. He is currently back at North Carolina A&T in his second year as a Doctorate Student in the “Rehabilitation Counseling & Counselor Education” program. Anthony is an Adlerian Therapist who focuses on assisting his clients with battling their own inferior feelings and finding meaning in life. Anthony has strong research interest in mentorship, specifically in young African American Males. He has spent a copious amount of time studying and researching methods of building mentoring programs in North Carolina. An- thony believes that mentorship is essential to success.     General Procedures for Completing a Doctor of Philosophy Degree School of Medicine Graduate Studies Program This section describes the procedures and documentation needed to receive a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the OHSU School of Medicine. Students and mentors should note relevant deadlines. Please refer to your individual program guide for additional requirements. Complete Program Requirements A minimum of 135 approved graduate credits are required. All program requirements must be completed including coursework, advancement to candidacy, research credits, and any additional requirements. Progress towards completing course requirements can be checked in DegreeWorks. All coursework applied towards degree requirements must meet the minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. 2. Apply for Degree The Office of the Registrar requires an Application for Degree be submitted one term prior to completing degree requirements. This can be submitted online by logging into the Student Information System (SIS). 3. Request for Oral Examination Students may not take the oral examination if they are on academic probation or if an Incomplete (I) grade remains on their transcript.     Doctorate Recipients from United States Universities: Summary Report 2004 Survey of Earned Doctorates SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, AND THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION HIGHLIGHTS This report presents data on recipients of research doctorates awarded by U.S. universities from July 1, 2003, through June 30, 2004. This information is taken from the 2004 Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED), an annual census of new doctorate recipients. • The 419 universities in the United States that conferred research doctorates awarded 42,155 doctorates during the 2003-2004 academic year (the eligibility period for the 2004 SED), an increase of 3.4 percent from the 40,770 doctorates awarded in 2003, and the highest number since the all-time high of 42,647 in 1998. • The number of doctorates awarded by broad field in 2004 was greatest in life sciences, which conferred 8,819 Ph.D.s. The numbers in the other broad areas were 6,795 in social sciences; 6,635 in education; 6,049 in physical sciences and mathematics (combined); 5,776 in engineering; 5,467 in humanities; and 2,614 in business and other professional fields. • Women received 19,098 doctorates, or 45 percent of all doctorates granted in 2004. This is very similar to last year’s percentage for women. Women earned 50 percent of the doctorates granted in life sciences, 55 percent in social sciences, 52 percent in humanities, 66 percent in education, and 46 percent in business/other professional fields.
