Is the “Ugg-ly” Trend Over? From the STATION MANAGER... “Good bye may seem forever. Farewell is like the end, but in my heart is the memory and there you will always be.” -The Fox and the Hound I have been dreading having to write this final column since the day that I was elected. I don’t want to say goodbye to this part of my life. When I came to Bona’s I decided to join the station because I thought it would be fun to have a show with some friends and call a few basketball games. I thought getting on the Board of Directors or becoming Station Manager would be extremely cool but impossible to achieve. Little did I know that the station would become the center of my college experience. Ever since I was put on the Board of Directors my sophomore year, The Buzz has felt like home. I’ve met some of my closest friends in the Board Room. Over the years, I’ve spent hours wasting time in the station and have taken countless naps on the leather couches. I’d like to say the station has become my home. Now I’m old and getting pushed out of the nest. However, it’s nice to know that I’m not alone. Marissa, Karly and Paige are in the same boat as I am. I’ve known these lovely ladies since I started school, and it’s been amazing sharing this experience with them. I know somewhere in this issue will be a farewell page to all of us who are leaving when the semester ends. However, I wanted to say my own goodbyes. Marissa and I came on the board the same semester. Since we were both shy at first, we were attached at the hip. I’ll never forget hanging out with Danny Busch at banquet and sleeping together in a shower curtain. Through the years, Marissa has always been a reliable Board member, even if she’s never shown up to a board meeting on time. As time has passed, we’ve had many Paul classes together and have grown as friends. Marissa, thank you for helping me adjust to the board and for all of the amazing memories. Karly was always that person in class who intimidated the hell out of me. Freshman year she always had something to say and seemed to be the stereotypical “know it all.” After I got on the board however, I instantly wanted to be friends with Karl who always seemed like the life of the party in the Board Room. No matter how close Karl and I got though I always feared being put on the Buzzworthy’s “Shit List,” which I’ve been placed on a few times. Karl, I have nothing but fond and fun memories with you. Thank you for constantly putting up with my horrible grammar and becoming a close friend. Paige, writing to you is really awkward because you are across the room writing my goodbye right now, too. Paige was one of the first friends that I made when I came to Bona’s and someone on the board that I have the most memories with. Between classes, weekend activities and CMJ’s, my memories with Paige are endless and sometimes nonexistent. There are so many things I want to say to you, Paige, but I think that we can both agree that the Buzzworthy is just not ready for some things. Paige, thanks for always making things interesting and for being a friend for so long, but please stop hitting on me. Well now I’m just down right sad. Leaving the station is harder than any test, paper or assignment that I’ll have to do in school. However, it’s nice to know that The Buzz is in good hands. We have an amazing Board filled with people who are extremely dedicated. I know Mike will do a wonderful job leading them, and we have the ability to make it back to #1 again. Thank you to all the members of the Board of Directors, alumni and the JMC School for making this year as Station Manager absolutely amazing. Even though sometimes it was stressful and not everything always went as planned, it was still incredible. I look forward to coming back next semester as a staffer and watching the Board grow. After all, I still live off campus and still don’t have a car, where else am I going to spend all my time between classes? -Meghan Palluconi Station Manager Station Manager: Meghan Palluconi Editor-in-Chief: Alexandra Napoli Managing Editor: Morgan Statt

Most of the artists, I’ve noticed, are considerably interactive with their followers despite their popularity. They ensure their fans, “Hey, we’re people too, and we can make weird, totally messed up, gone-a-bit-too-far tweets just like you guys can!” Some of these artists have completely harmless tweets, but just really like to connect with their followers. tumblr.com 10 November 22, 2013 The Buzzworthy happiest person on this side of the pond. It’s packed with covers and originals by the Fab Four, as well as chatter between songs that gives you a feeling of an intimate and private concert. One of the more intriguing options this holiday season is Childish Gambino’s release of his new album, Because the Internet. It’ll be released on December 10th and will only be pressed 800 times on vinyl. It’ll quickly become a collectible, especially for the fact it does not come with a tracklist, but a script, which makes it an even more intriguing purchase. Enjoy your holiday season, get cozy, get messy in the snow, but all in all, let the music guide you, friends.

GIFTS FOR MUSIC LOVERS By Nicholas Coyne This coming holiday season provides more than enough opportunity to get a gift for that special music nerd in your life, from audio box sets to new autobiographies from music’s more significant figures. The newly released autobiography by English solo artist and former lead singer of , ’s Autobiography chronicles his upbringing and rise and fall of his artistic adventures in a way only Morrissey can tell it: empathetic and sarcastic. Someone who has maintained such privacy and systematic release of his personal emotions automatically makes for an intriguing biographical release. It’s been receiving tons of great reviews upon its release weeks back in the UK. It’s coming out in the US around the first week of December, just in time for the holidays. Another Englishman releasing an autobiography is Graham Nash, titled Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life. It documents his solo career, his time with The Hollies and his well-acclaimed time spent as a part of CSN(Y). Nash was at the turning point of most turning points correlating between music and culture, such as his part in penning “Ohio,” with Neil Young, in dedication of the horrific Kent State shootings in 1970. It’s a great read for the music historian and for anyone interested in the crossover between music and culture during a time when rebellion and activism was partially attributed to the brave musicians who did their best to voice their generation’s criticisms and terrified confusion. Some of the most popular gift for music lovers in the past few years has been vinyl. Nothing like giving the gift of musical wax to a friend to keep them company on snowy nights (maybe while you read one of the previously mentioned books). Arcade Fire’s Reflektor has been a quick seller, as well as the Lorde’s Pure Heroine. As it pertains to box sets and collectibles, either one of the recently released two volumes of The Beatles’ On Air – Live at the BBC would make the Beatle lover in your life the

November 22, 2013 wsbufm.net 11 What to WEAR THE UGG-LY TREND COMING TO A CLOSE By Sarah Vaden

The reign of Uggs is finally coming to a close as the 2013 winter begins. The popular boots have been the “boots to wear” every winter since about 2006. According to an article in Business Insider: “Sales are down at Ugg, and executives are desperate to fix the problem,” the company blames warm winters for the decrease in sales, but that is not the case. The cold hard truth is that Uggs are just going out of style now that so many different types of boots are in. Boots such as thigh high boots, combat boots, riding boots, lace up booties and many others are now in style. Uggs are being pushed out of the spotlight because there are so many other, better, options. They had a good seven-year run, but by next winter I don’t think anyone will be putting them on their Christmas lists. Even I decided not to purchase a new pair of Uggs this year, and I’ve been getting a new pair every two years since sixth grade. Let’s face it, they may be great to warm our feet up on a cold December morning, but when it comes to style, they’re lacking. Unfortunately for Ugg, the dozen types of boots in style right now make outfits look cute and keep your feet warm. Uggs are also not weather dependent while boots such as combat boots are more durable in the snow and rain. At this point, no matter how disappointing it is to all those Ugg-lovers out there, buying them is just not practical. All we can do is hope that they come back into style or accept the fact that things are changing. In the meantime, pick out a cute pair of thigh high boots for Christmas this December instead of Uggs. It can’t hurt, right? 12 November 22, 2013 The Buzzworthy TRANSFORM Lauren Zazzara shows you how to take your summer pieces and use them for your winter look

Seeing as it has snowed multiple times in the past couple of weeks, I think it’s fair to say that winter is quickly making its way to St. Bonaventure. Upon looking inside your closet, you may ponder what to do with that left over summer clothing you refused to bring home over the last break. Should those pieces remain in the back of your wardrobe collecting cobwebs as the bleary months of winter pass slowly by? Of course not! Here’s how to take what you wore in the summer and transition it to colder months so that you can 1) look fashionable 2) make use of what you have, and 3) stay toasty. Consider the shorts that you wore in the summer, especially your patterned or colorful pairs. In the summer, you probably paired these with a t-shirt, belt, and sandals. To prevent your legs, arms, and toes from getting frost-bitten while still getting some wear out of your cute shorts, replace the t-shirt with a cozy sweater, climb into some thick opaque tights, and slip on some ankle boots. For extra warmth when the temperature drops below freezing, add a denim or military-style jacket, or even your parka. And voila! Your shorts have successfully survived the trek into the Western New York winter. What about that crop top that you wore with a pair of shorts and flip flops two months ago? Don’t let it go to waste at the bottom of your drawer. Invest in a pair of high-waisted jeans. The proportion of the shorter top with the jeans covering up more of your stomach creates an illusion of long legs that flatters every figure. Then, cover up your arms and shoulders with a grandpa cardigan and finish it off with a pair of boots. For a dressier option, replace the jeans with a maxi skirt to shield legs from the cold. If you’re a guy and are against wearing crop tops or tights with your shorts, simply take your summer t-shirts that you probably wore with cargo shorts and sandals, and replace the shorts with dark-wash jeans, the sandals with a pair of sneakers or desert boots, and throw on a zip-up jacket. A leather or wool jacket on top adds even more warmth on brisk mornings. Don’t feel the need to dump the contents of your wallet on a whole new wardrobe for winter. By using layers, you can easily transition your summer clothing into cozy shielding from the winter blizzards.

November 22, 2013 wsbufm.net 13 A TRIP TO THE CINEMA A look into the best and the worst of Hollywood’s hottest movies THOR: THE DARK WORLD By Justin Peterson As most of you probably know, Marvel has taken control of the summer blockbuster. Starting with Iron Man, Marvel has been releasing a constant stream of movies based off of its characters, and has been making billions of dollars in the process. Not only are names like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and The Hulk now household names, these movies have been able to capture the comics brilliantly with almost every try. Thor: The Dark World is no different. It soars above its predecessor Thor in more ways than one, and is one of the most enjoyable Marvel movies to date. Now facing the threat of an enemy long-forgotten, Thor must save the Nine Realms from destruction, albeit without his new superhero friends. Christopher Hemsworth once again picks up the hammer and cape in the flick, under a new director and coming fresh off of the enormous success of The Avengers. He makes Thor seem almost human even though he’s a god. It’s hard to see anyone else in the role at this point, really. Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins reprise their roles from the first movie as Jane and Odin, respectively, but it’s the return of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) that has fanboys foaming at the mouth. Before we talk about everyone’s favorite God of Mischief, there’s a new face behind the camera in the form of Game of Thrones alum Alan Taylor. What Taylor has done with Thor that makes it stand out from its predecessor is the battle scenes. Most of the Marvel movie battle scenes use a heavy dose of CGI, which is why it’s so refreshing to see the epic scope of the battles in The Dark World. Think of the Dark Elves as the Orcs in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, they’re real actors, making everything feel as real as mythical gods fighting elves can get. Other than the battle scenes, the story was good but predictable. There were some tear-jerking moments that may surprise some, and the ending of the movie is certainly going to shock viewers. Otherwise, it’s just good, old fashioned fun, just like all the other Marvel movies. You won’t get something as controversial as Iron Man 3, but you’ll leave satisfied. That being said, the screen sizzles every time Hiddleston’s Loki appears. Never before have I cared so much about an antagonist, and seeing him team up (begrudgingly) with Thor will make hardcore fans giddy and put smiles on every viewer’s face. Unfortunately, not everything runs smoothly for the God of Thunder’s second solo run. Malekith, played under pounds of make-up by Christopher Eccleston might look like a great villain, but he never really develops enough for anyone to care about his fate. His side-kick Kurse, however is much more interesting to watch and gets plenty of screen-time to show off. Other than that, Thor: The Dark World is an immensely enjoyable blockbuster that provides loads of action, comedy and likable characters. It is high up on my list of Marvel movies (and I’ve seen them all), and I strongly urge you to check it out for yourself. JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA By Stephanie Kennedy On Oct. 25, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, directed by Jeff Tremaine, was released. And it was as expected: vulgar, and hilarious. Of course, this is on par for a director who is one of the creators of the Jackass series, along with many other MTV productions. During the weekend, the movie grossed over double what the budget was for the movie. According to IMDb, this was roughly around $32 million just for the first weekend. Currently at number 5 in the box office sales, the movie's gross in the past four weeks has been about $90 million. These sales just show how successful this R-rated comedy has become. The comedy features actors in costume in real life situations. These professionals get real reactions from the people, or should I say victims, by pulling extensive practical jokes. Surprisingly, there was an actual plot to the movie along with all of the pranks. The main story of the film was about a grandfather, Irving, played by Johnny Knoxville, whose daughter was having some trouble taking care of herself and her young son, Billy, played by Jackson Nicoll. Billy goes on a roadtrip to live with his dad under the watchful eye of his grandfather. The trip ultimately results in a series of adventures and fun pranks that they both pull along the way. Eager to go see it because of how much I love comedies, I went during the first weekend. I walked in expecting extreme vulgarity because it was a Jackass production, so the pranks didn't surprise me as much in terms of how crazy they would be. From the eruption of laughter coming from the audience, it's safe to say that the movie does what it’s supposed to do. You know a movie’s funny when you laugh so hard you start to cry. The real reactions from the innocent people on the street add to the hilarity. If you're looking for a laugh, this is a perfect choice for a movie night. It has a good balance between the laughs and vulgarity. *WARNING* If you get offended easily, this isn’t the movie for you. You need a good sense of humor to watch this one; just remember, it’s a Jackass produced movie. Those who love to watch comedies, and love laughing so much that your cheeks hurt, will probably love this movie.

14 November 22, 2013 The Buzzworthy WE’LL MISS YOU, SENIORS! Board members say “goodbye” to their partners Karly, I’m not gonna lie; you intimidated me quite a bit at the very first interest meeting, fall semester of my freshman year. But I loved writing and knew I’d be able to win you over. And I did! At least, I hope I did... My first few weeks on the board were filled with tons of things to learn; I was overwhelmed. But you were always so patient and taught me everything there was to know. And look at me now! The phoenix crawling out of the ashes, as you would put it. Throughout my three semesters working with you, I had always looked up to you like an older sister. You’re brilliant, creative and hilarious: three things that will take you on amazing journeys throughout your life. Just don’t forget the little people in the small room upstairs in the RC! You bring so much life and excitement to WSBU. Really, there was never a dull moment when you were sitting in one of those ratty couches. And I can only imagine what excitement you’ll bring to wherever you end up. So, Big Sis, it’s safe to say that we’ll more than miss you here at the Buzz; myself especially. Board meetings will not be the same without you doodling inappropriately in your notebook. The layout board will also never be the same without “BALLSWORTHY” written in the most convenient of places... I’m glad to say that “Crazy Karly” freshman year did actually turn out to be crazy, but in the best way. Thank you so much for teaching me everything I know as I write this letter to you. Good luck out there; we’ll miss you in here. With love, Allie Well, Marissa, this is certainly a letter I'm saddened to write. It doesn't seem too long ago that I was sitting in the audience of Murphy listening to you and Clarky explain the News Department. I raced down to the front of the auditorium right after to talk to both of you right away, assuming there would be a line going out the door. Little did I know at the time, just a few months later I'd know you as much more than just the girl with very nice hair and a killer speaking voice (lolz). Both you and Clarky took me under your wing my freshman year and I'm so thankful for that. I knew we'd have a lot in common after the first news meeting, but when I first saw you tweet about , I knew it was fate that someday we would be partners. Our similarities don't stop with our love of Gossip Girl, though. Since my first day at the station, we've been able to hold endless conversations together. Each one with "Oh my goodness, Marissa is the coolest," running through my mind the whole time. I think what makes us such a great pair, however, is our mutual love for the News Department. I don't think I'll ever be able to find a boss as compatible with me as you are. Though I'm excited to be able to fill the gigantic shoes you've left me, I'll miss discussing the oh-so-very-complex relationship between Blair Waldorf and Chuck Bass and our hopes for the station. You've been a great role model and friend to me. Even though you're taking the next big stride in your life and graduating from the Buzz, I'll still look up to you as the best director ever. For the sake of the News Department's next assistant director, I hope I can be at least of fraction of as great of a director as you are. I miss you already, Marissa! But I promise, you've trained me well and the department is in good hands. Xoxo, Your Assistant, Jackie Roberts P.S. Hopefully we can find an occasion to wear our spy costumes together! Paige, A subject for many essays throughout my college career, Paige Winston, might as well be the most interesting “man” in the world. As my mentor for the past year, this chaotic masterpiece of a person has had an impact on me in ways that cannot be expressed through some grand cliché. Paige Winston is sure to raise your spirits any given day—and I didn’t even mean to rhyme. Maybe her “artsy” side is just as contagious. What I do know is that I pity anyone who has not gotten to know her like I have. It is impossible for me to recall a dull moment during the innumerable amount of concerts we attended together. The packing list for our most recent trip included things like: a quarter tank of gas for a 6 hour car ride our station manager successfully crammed in between our uncalled-for amount of luggage—a ridiculous lack for plans—one small apartment in the heart of Manhattan—three full press passes, and 500 bands from around the world. Hey man, not too shabby after all. This bittersweet transition—painful but necessary—gives me the opportunity to fulfill and continue your legacy. I cannot wait to see what kind of hell you raise next. Fingers crossed—Paige, this year is for you. Thank you for everything, and “WE GET IT,” I’m soft.
