At the 2011 Australian Age Championships in Adelaide, Cameron McEvoy burst into the public eye when he eclipsed Ian Thorpe's 16 years 100m freestyle record. He went on to win a further two gold medals in the 50m and 400m freestyle. Also in 2011, McEvoy won two World Titles in the 50m and 100m freestyle at the Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru. McEvoy got the chance to race his childhood hero Ian Thorpe at the 2011 World Cup in Singapore, grabbing his first senior international victory in the 100m freestyle, taking a full second from his personal best in the process. He then went on to eclipse the second of Ian Thorpe's age records, taking the 17 years 100m freestyle title in 49.19s. McEvoy finished high school in 2011 with a prize for advanced mathematics. He has a photographic memory which saw him place in the top ranks of all his subjects. He hopes to study biomedical science and applied physics.
