E-mail: [email protected] Received 10 January 2006; accepted 13 May 2006 Summary The objective of the study was Phacelia campanularia, an annual species of Hydrophyllaceae family. During 2003 – 2005 seasons, the investigations of flowering period and pollen effi- ciency were carried out under climatic conditions of the Lublin area. Weight of pollen was esti- mated by Warakomska's modified ether method (1972), pollen grains were measured according to the recommendations by Andrejev (1926). The results showed that the blooming of Phacelia campanularia started in first decade of June and lasted till the third decade of July (37 – 45 days). The mean number of flowers developed per one plant during the vegetation season reached from 388.7 in 2004, to 423.3 in 2003 and 437.8 in 2005. The flower of Phacelia has five stamens, the anthers of which start dehiscing and releasing pollen at morning hours. Pollen grains are round-flattened with furrows and smooth exine. Their dimensions ranged between 18.88 – 19.63 µm in polar view and 21.32 – 22.15 µm in equatorial view. The mean pollen weight produced by one flower reached 1.05 mg in 2003, 1.42 mg in 2004 and 1.35 mg in 2005, i.e. 444.25 mg, 552.92 mg and 592.34 mg per one plant respectively. A square meter of a phacelia plot may supply 4.22 – 5.63 g of pollen. -

The Weekly Plant 4 March 2012 Common names: desertbells, desert bluebells, California bluebell Scientific name: Phacelia campanularia1 TAV location: Between driveway and Javelina Way in front of Sarah Dinham’s townhome. Discussion: This showy annual has inch-long, bell-shaped blue flowers. The leaves are coarsely toothed, basal, and have dark red edges. It’s not clear if this species is native to Arizona or just to California. Some references list it as native to Maricopa and Pima Counties. Others list it as native to California only. However, it is frequently included in “desert wildflower” mixes, which may explain its appearance in Arizona and at TAV. Phacelias2 are in the waterleaf family (Hydrophyllaceae). Most have blue-purple flowers and bloom in early spring. The 5-petaled flowers are held in a helicoid cyme, a structure typically found in the waterleaf family and also in the borage family (Boraginaceae). In a helicoid cyme, the flowers are held on a long stalk that is coiled on itself, similar to a scorpion’s tail or to the symbol used in the TAV and ASA logos. The stalk straightens as more flowers open. Why do we care about helicoid cymes? You can use it to help you identify a plant. If you find a plant with a helicoid cyme, check your ID books for plants in the waterleaf and borage families. Many plant identification books and floras3 organize plants by families. Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. Racemes 11-21 flowered, 1.8-4.5cm long. Calyx 8-10mm long, the tube 3.8- 4.8mm long, 10-ribbed, villous, the teeth 3.6-5.2mm long, linear-lanceolate, as long as the tube; flowers 8.1-10.6 mm long, indigo; valves of pods with large, round, discrete yellowish or orange blister glands, pubescent between blister glands. Flowering and fruiting from May to June. Similar species: Differs consistently from P. fremontii only in the ornamentation of the pod. P. fremontii has small orange glands that are confluent lengthwise into crowded ridges towards the pod’s beak. P. arborescens has large round blister glands separated from one another by spaces as wide as their diameter. Habitat: On soils derived from the Moenkopi Formation in mixed desert shrub communities between 3400 – 4900ft Distribution: Endemic Northern Coconino County, AZ, in the vicinity of Marble Canyon. Navajo Nation Distribution: Currently only known from Navajo Springs area, south of Navajo Bridge. Potential Navajo Nation Distribution: Lee’s Backbone to Bitter Springs. Recommended Survey Period: Proper identification is only possible during the flowering and fruiting period in May and June. VOGL Department of Botany California State College at Los Angeles Los Angeles, California SHORTLY after arriving in California six years ago, I was asked to give a biology seminar lecture on my research. This was the usual procedure with new faculty and I prepared a lecture on my fire research in Wisconsin (Vogi 1961). These seminars were open to the public, since the college serves the city and sur rounding communities. As I presented my findings, I became con scious of the glint of state and U. S. Forest Service uniforms in the back rows. These back rows literally erupted into a barrage of probing questions at the end of the lecture. The questions were somewhat skeptical and were intended to discredit. They admitted that I almost created an acceptable argument for the uses and effects of fire in the Midwest, but were quick to emphasize that they were certain that none of these concepts or principles of fire would apply out here in the West. I consider this first California Tall Timbers Fire Ecology Con ference a major step towards convincing the West that fire has helped shape its vegetation and is an important ecological factor here, just as it is in the Midwest, Southeast, or wherever in North 79 RICHARD J. I hope that southern Californians attending these meetings or reading these Proceedings are not left with the impression that the information presented might be acceptable for northern California but cannot be applied to southern California because the majority of contributors worked in the north. -

Vegetation Classification and Map Accuracy Assessment of the Proposed Tehachapi Pass High-Speed Rail Corridor Vegetation Map Kern County, California Prepared for the Strategic Growth Council by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program September 2015 ABSTRACT The Geographical Information Center (GIC) at California State University, Chico, completed a vegetation map of the Proposed Tehachapi Pass High-Speed Rail Corridor (HSRC), covering 199,493 acres. The project was funded by the Strategic Growth Council to support routing and mitigation planning for the high-speed rail system. The map was produced using heads-up digitizing based on 2012 National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery. The minimum mapping unit (MMU) is one acre for most vegetation types, with a smaller MMU for wetlands. Although the primary purpose of the map is to document vegetation communities, it provides additional structural data such as herbaceous, shrub, and tree cover, and information about the level of disturbance within the vegetation stand. This report describes the tasks performed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program (VegCAMP), specifically, the creation of a vegetation classification for the project area and the accuracy assessment of the map. Department of Fish and Game Biogeographic Data Branch The Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program List of California Terrestrial Natural Communities Recognized by The California Natural Diversity Database September 2003 Edition Introduction: This document supersedes all other lists of terrestrial natural communities developed by the Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB). It is based on the classification put forth in “A Manual of California Vegetation” (Sawyer and Keeler-Wolf 1995 and upcoming new edition). However, it is structured to be compatible with previous CNDDB lists (e.g., Holland 1986). For those familiar with the Holland numerical coding system you will see a general similarity in the upper levels of the hierarchy. You will also see a greater detail at the lower levels of the hierarchy. The numbering system has been modified to incorporate this richer detail. Decimal points have been added to separate major groupings and two additional digits have been added to encompass the finest hierarchal detail. One of the objectives of the Manual of California Vegetation (MCV) was to apply a uniform hierarchical structure to the State’s vegetation types. Quantifiable classification rules were established to define the major floristic groups, called alliances and associations in the National Vegetation Classification (Grossman et al. 1998). In this document, the alliance level is denoted in the center triplet of the coding system and the associations in the right hand pair of numbers to the left of the final decimal. The numbers of the alliance in the center triplet attempt to denote relationships in floristic similarity. For example, the Chamise-Eastwood Manzanita alliance (37.106.00) is more closely related to the Chamise- Cupleaf Ceanothus alliance (37.105.00) than it is to the Chaparral Whitethorn alliance (37.205.00). -
