M V Magnier of Coolmore Stud bought just one horse, but she cost 2,200,000gns, the sum he paid for the sale-topper, Beach Frolic, who was sold to dissolve a partnership between consignors Highclere Stud and Floors Stud. MAHONY’S LOOK BACK ON TURBULENT TIMES At the conclusion of the sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony reflected on the strangest of sales seasons, on the emergence of online bidding, and on the importance of international investors to a catalogue that was shy of the very highest quality. His company turned over 261,000,000gns during a turbulent #JUMPINGTOIT year, some 44,000,000gns down on 2019 and the lowest figure since 2013. Given the sense of shock when Britain was locked down initially in March, with no immediate end date, that reduction might not seem too bad now. Mahony’s close-of-sale statement read: “Traditionally at the conclusion of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale we would reflect upon the level of trade, both at the December Sales and earlier sales, £250,000 and also record our thanks and appreciation to all those who have contributed throughout the year. “In this strangest of years our thanks to all concerned is an even more central message, but we should start by expressing heartfelt paid out in GBB gratitude on behalf of the wider industry that the 2020 Tattersalls Jumps bonuses December Sales, Europe’s foremost foal and breeding stock sales,

Banmi (Kodiac), consigned by Christine Dunnett’s College Feeling Farm Stables as Lot 2195, topped the final session of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale yesterday when purchased for 21,000gns. © Tattersalls.com entrance, rain dripping from his stetson. If the aim was to create an image of the gunslinger who has kicked open the doors of the Last Chance Saloon, sending card players and bourbon drinkers TOP! scurrying under tables, it worked, and with a nonchalant lift of his pistol – apologies, finger – rival bidders were silenced. 54 foals, fillies, Thorman, in keeping with the cool (and rather damp) persona, said little except to say he was acting for Howson, but the buyer and mares himself later relayed: “We’ve bought her for a French client. She was quite small but she has speed in the pedigree and that’s what the Exceptional pedigrees client wanted. The Kodiac over Night Shift cross was very appealing too. I don’t know who she’ll be covered by yet, but she’s going to be a The leading European sires broodmare and as she’s heading to France she’ll visit a stallion in Normandy.” Three-year-old Banmi, a daughter of Kodiac and the Night Shift mare Fingal Nights, was consigned by trainer Christine Dunnett, who has run her four times recently without success, Arqana Breeding Stock Sale 2020 although she did win a race at Chelmsford last year while with Mohamed Moubarak. That made her one of six winners for her Rendez-vous in dam, whose best foal, Moonlit Garden, was Listed-placed and the Hippodrome Yard has foaled a couple of minor black-type earners of her own. Fingal Nights’s two-year-old Ballintoy Harbour, a daughter of Vadamos, ran well on debut when fourth to the useful Umm Kulthum, and subsequently won at Pontefract in August. Dunnett’s yard also consigned Penarth Pier (Lot 2095), a four- year-old mare believed not in foal, but whose dam, Listed winner © Agence G Waveband, is a full-sister to the sire Bungle Inthejungle. He stands at Maurice Burns’s Rathasker Stud, and it was that same Kildare stallion farm which lowered the hammer for Penarth Pier with a bid of 16,000gns. FROM CRACKER TO QUEEN Stringston Farm’s Nick Pocock was a vendor and buyer at the final session, gaining 5,000gns for Code Cracker (Lot 2176) and then spending that and adding some to gain Divine Queen (2258). Consigned by Julia Feilden, the three-year-old Divine Queen (Kingman) won at Windsor in October and is a half-sister to Listed winner Second Generation, a filly by Dawn Approach. The first Lucie Lamotte +33 (0)6 67 35 74 58 dam El Manati was a winner at two and placed in the Gr.3 Cornwallis Gwenaël Monneraye +33 (0)6 67 71 21 41 Stakes, and it was that precocity which caught Pocock’s eye.

SELWOOD PAIR MAKE SENSE A pair of mares from James Read’s Selwood Bloodstock included The Stalking Moon (Lot 2158) who was sold for 19,000gns. Josh Schwartz of Creighton Schwartz Bloodstock signed for the six-year-old, a daughter of Arcano and a winner at Windsor in August for Mark Usher. After 37 runs over trips up to 1m2f and having recorded five victories it could be said she deserves a rest from racing, and Schwartz said a paddock was waiting. Her dam, Cornakill (Stormin Fever), won twice and her five-year-old son Ghost Serge gained a Listed place in France. Schwartz added: “She’s been bought for a client in Ireland and will probably go to the breeding shed next year. She walks very well and is very attractive. The client was keen to buy her – she’s tough and genuine.” A 16,000gns bid by Swedish breeder Pernilla Nilsson enabled her to sign for the Selwood Bloodstock-consigned Canyara (Lot 2157), an eight-year-old mare carrying to Time Test. The dam of one winner, unraced Canyara also foaled Chatarina (Lawman) who has been placed four times in Nilsson’s home country. Sandown, 1st & 2nd December 1995 Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the 1995 renewal of the Tingle Creek meeting saw a vintage array of classy winners on show. The lengthy career of Willsford (Beau Charmer) [1] saw him net 14 victories in all, including at the Cheltenham Festival in 1989, and this day saw him record the last of those successes in the 3m5f chase. Still only a five-year-old, the future Gr.2 winner Chief’s Song (Chief Singer) [2] out-battled Eskimo Nel (Shy Groom) to win the 2m handicap hurdle. [3] The future Gr.1 Cheltenham Gold Cup victor See More Business (Seymour Hicks) recorded the first of his 11 Graded victories in the Gr.2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle. [4] Racegoers were treated to the sight of the outstanding US jumper Lonesome Glory (Transworld) making a winning debut in Britain in the 2m4f handicap chase, in which he defeated the smart Egypt Mill Prince by 15 lengths. The main race of the day, [5] the Gr.1 Tingle Creek Trophy Chase, went to Sound Man (Kemal) [white cap], the first of his two victories in that race. [6] The Gr.2 (then) Henry VIII Novices’ Chase was won by Certainly Strong (Strong Gale; nearside), who defeated Captain Khedive by seven lengths, while the future Gr.1 Queen Mother Champion Chase victor Call Equiname (Belfort) [7] won the 2m novice hurdle.
