Invariably we shall attempt a summary of the work in question, a consideration of its themes and literary qualities and the reception of the work. There will be at the appropriate place, a more detailed consideration of She Stoops to Conquer—a text which is widely read because of its popularity. Section 1: Introduction In this lesson we shall deliberate on the life and opinions of Oliver Goldsmith. He was considered a man who had the ability to turn whatever he touched to either dross or gold.The celebrated author of the Citizen of the World, poems such as, The Travelerand The Deserted Village, Enquiry into the Present State ofPolite Learning in Europe, a novelette, The Vicar of Wakefield,essays and reviews and two well-known plays – The Critic and She Stoops to Conquer. However, he also wrote Histories which are considered unreadable.He was part of a club which countedEdmund Burke (the statesman), Thomas Warton (the scholar), Sir JoshuaReynolds (the painter),Dr. Johnson (the greatCham of Literature)and Sir WilliamChambers (the judge), amongst its members. In this club, where learning was obviously visible, and wit freely displayed, Oliver Goldsmith was often the butt ofchafingat the hands of his compeers who made fun of his envious nature and his craving for attention. He was capable of saying the most outrageous things only to draw attention to himselfandhisenvyofDr. Johnson led him to make unwise remarks. He would attempt to make light of this by sometimes joining in the fun and mocking himself and ‘Nolly’ as he was affectionately called, was seen as a sympathetic character. Hewas sensitive to slights and on occasion crossed swords even with his formidable friend, Dr. Johnson, who quickly made up with his younger colleague.On balance in spite of his drunkenness and foolishness, he comes through as a well-rounded author and a major figure in Eighteenth Century EnglishLiterature. Section 2: Life and Letters of Goldsmith Goldsmith was of Irish stock and was born on November 10, 1728, in Pallas, in the county of Longford, theson of an Anglican clergyman. He studied at the Edgeworthstown School and Trinity College, Dublin, securing a BA. in 1749. He went to study medicine in Edinburgh and thenwanderedaroundEurope, begging for bread by playing the flute or practicing medicine. He understood poverty first hand and this is visible in his literary work. Among his many writings arethefour volume History of England, his eight volume History of the Earth and Animated Nature and his two volume History of Romegenerally regarded as indifferent performances. Even a brief consideration of the letters of Goldsmith where he is seen at his candid and intimate best, demonstrates the human side of Goldsmith which endeared him to his relatives and friends. Againstthe scanty biographical information available on Goldsmith, the letters are a revelation ofhis relationship with his family, particularly his brothers, and on the authenticity of his Fiddleback Adventures, his writing of the mediocre ThrenodiaAugustalis and of the brilliantShe Stoops to Conquer. His letters, edited so ably by Katherine C Balderstone as early as 1928 and reprinted in 1969 by the Folcroft Press, provide a clearer picture of him. Some information on his early life is culled from his letters to his sister, Mrs. Hodgson and the prosaic side of an otherwise colourful life, comes out in his constant demand on people for monetary loans and promises of repayment, his complaints of neglect by friends and relatives and so on. We also learn, crucially, why he could not make it to India as a physician for the East India Company. The French invasion of Madras was partly responsible for his inability to set sail. Section 3: Citizen of the World Goldsmith printed in The Public Ledger in 1760 and 1761 a series of “Chinese Letters” which in 1762 were collected and published as Citizen of the World. In this very interesting narrative, Goldsmith invents a fictional characters called Lien Chi Altangi who is purported to be a native of Hunan in China. Altangi who has met many Englishmen in Canton has learnt English and sends a series of letters from London to his friend Fum Foam, the President of the Ceremonial Academy in Peking. These letters are descriptive of the manners and customsof the English and in writing about these,Altangi exposes the ridiculous customs and characteristics of English people. Here is a witty excerpt from Altangi in Letter ii:“I have known some provinces [in China]where there is not even a name for the ocean. What a strange people therefore am I got amongst, who have founded an empire on this unstable element, who build cities upon billows that rise higher than the mountains of Tipartala,and make the deep more formidable than the wildest tempest”. Using a foreign traveller to make fun of one’s own culture is a time honoured fictional device, tried out by Montesquieu, Horace Walpole, among others. Goldsmith satirizes his country by using this device, and through these letters, fictionalizes his own experiences as a traveller to many parts of the world. The satire becomes even more authentic because Goldsmith takes care to portray Altangi as a reliable and authoritative observer of the English scene. Section 4: The Traveller The Traveller, or, a Prospect of Society was published in 1764, though he had begun writing it in 1755while he was travelling in Switzerland. From the vantage point of the Alps, the narrator speculates on happiness. It is a philosophical poem written in heroic couplets. It reflects on the causes of humanhappiness and sorrow. In this poem, as his dedication tells us, Goldsmith was attempting to show that every nationhas its own degree ofhappiness and believes they have a monopoly over happiness. Goldsmith believes that actually happiness is equally spread across the world, but manifests itself in different ways, depending on the mode of governance of a nation. He goes on to reflect on Italy, Switzerland, France, Holland and, of course, Britain. In Britain a free constitution has led to the rich oppressing the poor, and those who fled this tyranny and went to America, have found the land dangerous and harsh. True happiness, the poem concludes is to be found within oneself: “How small, of all that human hearts endure, That part which laws or Kings can cause or cure. Still to ourselves in every place consign’d, Our own felicity we make or find.” The poem, in a way, made Goldsmith’s reputation and it had the commendation of Johnson, the most influential critic of the age. It is, like The Deserted Village, a poem which has a conservative bias and is against speculation and crass capitalism and commerce. The poem has been praised for its sentiments, its elegant imagery and its sublimity. Goldsmith, on this basis, has been considered a great Augustan poet. Section 5: The Deserted Village This poem was published in 1770 and is, like The Traveller, a work of social commentary and satire. While there has been much speculation as to the original of the Village - with some identifying it with Lissoy in Ireland, others with Nuneham Courtenay - the village of the poem could actually exemplify in general, England’s rural economy shattered by depopulation, with people migrating to the urban cities or to America. Its innocence strikes a contrast with the moral degradation of the cities. Through the lives and annals of the Village,Goldsmith criticizes consumerism, capitalism and the effects of the industrial revolution, enclosure of the common land in rural parts, the vogue for landscape gardening at the expense of original landscape,andingeneral the commercial and money mindedness of the people. It is a Tory poem and is therefore profoundly political. The poem opens with a description of “Sweet Auburn”, the ideal Village of Goldsmith’s conception where health and plenty abound, the swains labour cheerfully and where spring brings plenitude. This is how Auburn was but now everything is ruined because of the depopulation of the village. Then follow two beautiful and justly famous portraits (Chaucer’s influence is clearly visible) of the Village Parson and the Village School master and a poignant description of the bonhomie which existed in the ale house at one time. Goldsmith attacks the corruptions of the day, the manner in which a village girl goes to the city and loses her innocenceand how those from Auburn who have migrated to America are hardly better off in a land of blazing suns and horrid shores. His famous remark “ill fares the land which expels its peasantry, because a village community once gone can never be replaced” and “when wealth accumulates men decay”, are justly proverbial. The poem is 430 lines long and written in heroic-couplets, with an AABBCC rhyme scheme. The consistent iambic pentameter lines and thecareful choice of diction andapt handling of syntax makes this a supreme example of Augustan satire. The pastoral tradition to which this poembelongs ,imitates classical writers such as Pliny and Juvenal, who bemoaned in their poems the displacement of the rural poor by the rich. In the manner of Virgil, who in his Georgics attributes the corruption of Rome and the Roman Empire to luxury and pride, Goldsmith warns Britain of the same danger to it.

Its magnitude lies in the sure-fire comic devices and witty characters as well in the profound insight adjoined the comic situations and events. As a transitional playwright, Farquhar has one foot in the declining traditions of the Comedy of Manners, and the other foot in the growing vogue of Sentimental Comedy, employing some character types of the old tradition with innovative alteration, together with introducing prototypes of the coming sentimental types. To keep pace with the shift in tone, he modifies the purpose of his play to suit the specifications of critics, moralists and theatre goers. With its innovative particulars, it sets an early premise for the approaching changes in the dramatic conventions and trends of the 18th Century comedies. More crucially, it forms a gateway to move into the world of sentimentalism, or a bridge between the two.     Pre-print of Hall, E. in Aristophanes in Performance (Legenda 2005) The English-Speaking Aristophanes and the Languages of Class Snobbery 1650-1914 Edith Hall Introduction In previous chapters it has been seen that as early as the 1650s an Irishman could use Aristophanes to criticise English imperialism, while by the early 19th century the possibility was being explored in France of staging a topical adaptation of Aristophanes. In 1817, moreover, Eugene Scribe could base his vaudeville show Les Comices d’Athènes on Ecclesiazusae. Aristophanes became an important figure for German Romantics, including Hegel, after Friedrich von Schlegel had in 1794 published his fine essay on the aesthetic value of Greek comedy. There von Schlegel proposed that the Romantic ideals of Freedom and Joy (Freiheit, Freude) are integral to all art; since von Schlegel regarded comedy as containing them to the highest degree, for him it was the most democratic of all art forms. Aristophanic comedy made a fundamental contribution to his theory of a popular genre with emancipatory potential. One result of the philosophical interest in Aristophanes was that in the early decades of the 18th century, until the 1848 revolution, the German theatre itself felt the impact of the ancient comic writer: topical Lustspiele displayed interest in his plays, which provided a model for German poets longing for a political comedy, for example the remarkable satirical trilogy Napoleon by Friedrich Rückert (1815-18). This international context illuminates the experiences undergone by Aristophanic comedy in England, and what became known as Britain consequent upon the 1707 Act of Union.

The language of drama can range between great extremes: on the one hand, an intensely theatrical and ritualistic manner; and on the other, an almost exact reproduction of real life A dramatic monologue is a type of lyrical poem or narrative piece that has a person speaking to a select listener and revealing his character in a dramatic situation In a strict sense, plays are classified as being either tragedies or comedies. The broad difference between the two is in the ending. Comedies end happily. Tragedies end on an unhappy note. Tragic or comic, the action of the play comes from conflict of characters how the stage people react to each other. These reactions make the play. Tragedies end on an unhappy note. The tragedy acts as a purge. It arouses our pity for the stricken one and our terror that we ourselves may be struck down. As the play closes we are washed clean of these emotions and we feel better for the experience.

Oliver Goldsmith writes that the true function of a comedy was to give a humorous exhibition of the follies and vices of men and women and to rectify them by exciting laughter. Goldsmith opposed sentimental comedy because in place of laughter and humour, it provided tears and distressing situations, pathetic lovers, serious heroines and honest servants.     Types of Comedy for Drama Class Studying comedy can be o ne of the most enjoyable units of work in any high school drama program. One of the advantages of comedy is there are so many sub genres of this form that can be isolated for investigation and performance at different levels of schooling. I find the more visual and physical forms of comedy are enjoyed by junior students, while understandably senior students often find literary and sophisticated forms of comedy rich and rewarding in their drama studies. One of the main challenges of studying comedy is that the end product should not just be entertaining, but humorous for the audience. Considering the audience is usually students’ peers in their own classroom, they often discover it is a fine line between being funny or embarrassed when the humour falls flat. So, creating a culture of acceptance in your drama classroom where students will not ridicule those who take a risk with their comedy performances, is essential. Below I have compiled a 30 different comedy forms with my own descriptions, suggested year levels at which to study them in drama, plus links to relevant published articles on The Drama Teacher. Low Comedy requires little skill in the scripting (if there is a script at all). Often a visual or highly physical work. Appropriate for all year levels. Slapstick is knockabout, physical humour. Media examples include The Three Stooges, The Marx Bros, Laurel and Hardy and Mr Bean. Appropriate for all year levels. Farce involves ridiculous, improbable situations. Media examples include Fawlty Towers and Monty Python.

    Semester VI - Discipline Specific Elective English Language and Literary Types Discussing Different Aspects of Comedy as a Literary Type Kinds Of Comedy In Diverse Historical Periods Old and New Comedy in ancient Greece The 11 surviving plays of Aristophanes represent the earliest extant body of comic drama; what is known of Greek Old Comedy is derived from these plays, the earliest of which, The Acharnians, was produced in 425 BCE. Aristophanic comedy has a distinct formal design but displays very little plot in any conventional sense. Rather, it presents a series of episodes aimed at illustrating, in humorous and often bawdy detail, the implications of a deadly serious political issue: it is a blend of invective, buffoonery, and song and dance. Old Comedy often used derision and scurrility, and this may have proved its undoing; though praised by all, the freedom it enjoyed degenerated into license and violence and had to be checked by law. In New Comedy, which began to prevail about 336 BCE, the Aristophanic depiction of public personages and events was replaced by a representation of the private affairs (usually amorous) of imaginary men and women. New Comedy is known only from the fragments that have survived of the plays of Menander (c. 342–c. 292 BCE) and from plays written in imitation of the form by the Romans Plautus (c. 254–184 BCE) and Terence (195 or 185–159 BCE). A number of the stock comic characters survived from Old Comedy into New: an old man, a young man, an old woman, a young woman, a learned doctor or pedant, a cook, a parasite, a swaggering soldier, a comic slave.

Abstract: The comedy of manners is a phrase often used in literary history and criticism. It is particularly applied to the Restoration dramatists in England. Sheridan‟s purpose in writing “The Rivals” was to entertain the audience by making them laugh and not by making them shed tears and serious. The sentimental comedy of 18th century was actually reaction against the comedy of manners which had been voyage during the restoration period. That mainly appears to our feelings of sentimentality, pity, compassionate sympathy. Anti-sentimental comedy is reaction against sentimental comedy. The sentimental comedy did not last language.     comedy Evolution of Comedy Dramatic comedy grew out of the boisterous choruses and dialogue of the fertility rites of the feasts of the Greek god Dionysus. What became known to theater historians as Old Comedy in ancient Greece was a series of loosely connected scenes (using a chorus and individual characters) in which a particular situation was thoroughly exploited through farce, fantasy, satire, and parody, the series ending in a lyrical celebration of unity. Reaching its height in the brilliantly scathing plays of Aristophanes, Old Comedy gradually declined and was replaced by a less vital and imaginative drama. In New Comedy, generally considered to have begun in the mid-4th cent. B.C., the plays were more consciously literary, often romantic in tone, and decidedly less satirical and critical.Menander was the most famous writer of New Comedy. During the Middle Ages the Church strove to keep the joyous and critical aspects of the drama to a minimum, but comic drama survived in medieval folk plays and festivals, in the Italian commedia dell'arte, in mock liturgical dramas, and in the farcical elements of miracle and morality plays. With the advent of the Renaissance, a new and vital drama emerged. In England in the 16th cent. the tradition of the interlude, developed by John Heywood and others, blended with that of Latin classic comedy, eventually producing the great Elizabethan comedy, which reached its highest expression in the plays of Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. Shakespeare, whose comedies ranged from the farcical to the tragicomic, was the master of the romantic comedy, while Jonson, whose drama was strongly influenced by classical tenets, wrote caustic, rich satire.

    MODERNIST MEANINGS IN THE EUROPEAN RENOVATION OF COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE DRAMA Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Anita Jean Saha, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Eugenia Romero, Advisor Stephen Summerhill, Co-advisor Rebecca Haidt Copyright by Anita Jean Saha 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the rediscovery of commedia dell’arte theatre in Europe during the Modernist era (approximately 1890-1930) by dramatists and theatre directors, which led to its usage as a tool for individual experimentation and general escape from the anxieties associated with the changing political environment. The appropriation of commedia dell’arte theatre was, for many theatre practitioners, the perfect structure with which to counteract the dominant realist aesthetic that was prevalent throughout Europe at the time. Although these Modernist commedia-based plays and productions were generally created as art-for-art’s sake, this is not the case everywhere, as evidenced by some of the themes, both overt and masked, in the works of a few Spanish dramatists. Using literary history as the theoretical framework, this dissertation contends that Modernist commedia-based dramas serve as an appropriate point of departure for comprehending literary reactions to, and reproductions of, the revolutions in technology, politics, and social practices that contributed to the modern order. While representations of cynical clowns, such as Harlequin, were mostly apolitical, the pessimism that dominates the farces, the pantomimes and the puppet plays can be viewed in response to the radically changing social and political environment.
