Only the City of London is geographically smaller. The Royal Borough’s has a population of more than 184,000 people that makes it the size of a medium-sized town, comparable to Luton, Northampton or Aberdeen. Kensington and Chelsea is also one of the most distinctive urban communities in Britain. It is the most densely- populated local authority in the country and, in the context of an urban setting at the heart of a megalopolis, it offers one of the most attractive places to live or work anywhere in the world. The present Royal Borough was created during the re-organisation of London local government in 1965 as a result of the merger of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea and the Royal Borough of Kensington.
