The impetus for the consideration of academic and athletic missions came from the minds of Dr. T. Frank Saunders and Dr. Boyd B. The interview process required considerable cooperation, not only from the individuals and departments scrutinized, but also from those in my own department who allowed me the latitude for the completion of a project that occasionally became my occupation. It was hypothesized that a department with a base of academic integrity and service to the student-athlete will be more likely to be in congruence with the educational mission of the institution. It was expected that an athletic department with a clearly articulated mission and commonly agreed upon goals would elicit a performance commitment by the individual to the department and to the institution. In 1972 Jerry wrote a guest column for The Press-Telegram, in Long Beach, California, disparaging the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA’s) sanctioning process. These columns expressed Tarkanian’s belief that the NCAA used sanctions vindictively and arbitrarily. While many coaches would have agreed with Jerry, usually only those who had already been punished spoke out. Either Tarkanian was more courageous than his contemporaries or he wasn’t smart enough to know better. Whichever the case, Tarkanian paid the price over the next twenty one years. The NCAA began investigating Long Beach State in 1972 for recruiting violations. Long Beach State was placed on three year disciplinary probation in 1974, a year after Tarkanian was hired by UNLV.
