  • On October SO, 1993, the Mirage Resorts, Inc., Imploded the Casino and North Tower, Which Was Televised
Dunes MICHELLE REED On October SO, 1993, the Mirage Resorts, Inc., imploded the casino and north tower, which was televised. The Dunes's death signified the birth of another resort. n I ily, we're going to be late," Robert says. He paces nervously in front of Lthe door and jingles our car keys in his hand. "It doesn't matter," I say. "They're always running behind anyway." I slurp the leftover milk from my cereal bowl and place it on the coffee table. "I want to see what they're going to say about the Dunes." Robert sighs loudly as he moves around the room. He fluffs the pillows beside me on the sofa and straightens the pile of magazines on the floor beside his chair. It's not his fault that he doesn't understand. He doesn't know Lizzy, has never even heard of her. I pick up the remote control and turn the volume up on the television. The news of the implosion of the Dunes made it all the way from Las Vegas to New Orleans, and a KNYZ reporter is announcing that it will be broadcast tonight at 6 p.m. The screen behind her shows a group of people gathered around the casino's marquee. Thanks for the Memories, it reads. It's been nineteen years since I've seen my sister. I search the crowd for her face, almost sure that I won't see her but hoping anyway. Lizzy was in the eighth grade when I was nine. It was 1973, the year she stopped celebrating her birthday.

_______________________________________________________ 2002, in Nature and its Discontents from Virgin Land to Disney World: Reinterpretations of Freud's Civilization Thesis in the America(s) of Yesterday and Today. Ed. B. Herzogenrath. New York: Editions Rodopi ________________________________________________________ Natasha Dow Schull Oasis/Mirage: Fantasies of Nature in Las Vegas* I had the great fortune of arriving in Las Vegas at dawn in an airplane. It was light enough to see the city and part of the desert, but it was still dark enough so that they hadn't turned the signs off for the day. I never saw such a sight in my life. It looked like an entire city was lurching across the desert. It was an incredible movement! I rented a car and started driving and I saw an extraordinary thing: the horizon, the skyline, was not made of trees and it was not made of buildings. It was all signs. Tom Wolfe (in Stern 1979:11) The towns of the desert end abruptly; they have no surround. And they have about them something of the mirage, which may vanish at any instant. You have only to see Las Vegas, sublime Las Vegas, rise in its entirety from the desert at nightfall bathed in phosphorescent lights, and return to the desert when the sun rises, after exhausting its intense, superficial energy all night long, still more intense in the first light of dawn, to understand the secret of the desert and the signs to be found there: a spellbinding discontinuity, an all-enveloping, intermittent radiation. Jean Baudrillard (1989:127) Almost everyone notes that there is no “time” in Las Vegas, no night and no day and no past and no future; neither is there any logical sense of where one is.

  • Bellagio Resort Parking Garage
BELLAGIO RESORT PARKING GARAGE Although Las Vegas is known for its gambling, that was the last thing developers wanted to do when it came to selecting protective coatings for the new 10-story, 5,300 space employee parking structure at the elegant Bellagio Resort and Casino. That’s why proven protective coatings from Tnemec were applied on the parking structure’s interior concrete, exterior concrete columns and shop primed steel located on the tenth floor, as well as the decorative ornamental steel. The new construction replaces an employee parking lot located on the site of the $11 billion Project CityCenter, a 66-acre mixed-use development described as the largest privately financed development in the U.S. Nearly 34,000 gallons of Series 180 W.B. Tneme-Crete, an acrylic emulsion coating, were applied to the concrete in the parking structure, according to Eric Brackman, Tnemec coating consultant for the project. “The interior of the structure was a little more than two million square feet,” Brackman noted. “Being a dry-fall material, we didn’t have to worry about overspray of the product on employee or customer vehicles.” Concrete substrates were pressure washed to provide a clean, PROJECT INFORMATION dry and sound surface prior to the application. Afterwards, the interior coating was applied by airless spray equipment. “They first started applying the material in December 2005 when the Project Location temperature can get cold, so the ability to apply the coating in Las Vegas, Nevada cooler weather was critical,” Brackman acknowledged. Project Completion Date “The fact that the coating can be applied as soon as seven days Fall 2006 after the concrete is poured was another important factor,” Owner Brackman said.

Commerce St. Caesars has a significant presence in Las Vegas with a 63% EBITDA Las Vegas, NV 89141 exposure. Labor contracts for most Las Vegas casino resorts, including all but one of the Caesars properties, expire at the end of May. Last week, 25,000 union members voted to authorize a strike by a 99% margin. Main outstanding issues in CZR negotiations include technology, housekeeping workload study, union security in case of change of ownership, and wages and benefits. The difference between the two sides’ economic proposals is approximately $7.4 million in the first year and $8.9 million in the fifth year. A one-month strike could reduce CZR’s EBITDAR by nearly $120 million. Negotiations are scheduled for May 29 and May 30 Labor contracts for most Las Vegas casino resorts expire at the end of May. Collective bargaining agreements between UNITE HERE’s Culinary Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165 (“the Union”) and most of the casino resorts on the Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas are set to expire at the end of this month. All Caesars properties except the Rio have contracts expiring at the end of the month. (See the end of this note for a list of properties at risk.) Caesars has a significant presence in Las Vegas with a 63% EBITDA exposure. Negotiations for a new 5-year deal covering all CZR properties’ approximately 12,000 workers started in March, but major differences remain between the unions and the company.
