Bauer Received: 16 May 2017 / Accepted: 17 July 2017 / Published online: 16 January 2018 Ó Swiss Geological Society 2017 Abstract New species of a gecko of the genus Euleptes is described here—E. klembarai. The material comes from the middle Miocene (Astaracian, MN 6) of Slovakia, more precisely from the well-known locality called Zapfe‘s fissure fillings (Devı´nska Nova´ Ves, Bratislava). The fossil material consists of isolated left maxilla, right dentary, right pterygoid and cervical and dorsal vertebrae. The currently known fossil record suggests that isolation of environment of the Zapfe‘s fissure site, created a refugium for the genus Euleptes in Central Europe (today, this taxon still inhabits southern part of Europe and North Africa—E. europea), probably resulting from the island geography of this area during the middle Miocene. The isolation of this territory might have facilitated allopatric speciation. Box 50007, SE-104 05 Stockholm, Sweden; e-mail: [email protected] Manuscript received: October 2000; accepted: January 2002 ^ Abstract This paper discusses the faunal content, the mammal biostratigraphy, and the environmental ecology of three important con tinental Tertiary vertebrate faunas from the Lower Rhine Embayment. The sites investigated are Rott (MP 30, Late Oligocene), Hambach 6C (MN 5, Middle Miocene), Frechen and Hambach 11 (both MN 16, Late Pliocene). Comparative analysis of the entire faunas shows the assemblages to exhibit many conformities in their general composition, presumably re sulting from their preference for wet lowlands. It appears that very similar environmental conditions for vertebrates reoc- curred during at least 20 Ma although the sites are located in a tectonically active region with high subsidence rates. Differ ences in the faunal composition are partly due to local differences in the depositional environment of the sites: lake deposits at the margin of the embayment (Rott), coal swamp and estuarine conditions in the centre of the embayment (Hambach 6C), and flood plain environments with small rivulets (Frechen and Hambach 1 l).The composition of the faunal assemblages (di versity and taxonomy) also documents faunal turnovers with extinctions and immigrations (Oligocene/Miocene and post- Middle Miocene), as a result of changing climate conditions. Additional vertebrate faunal data were retrieved from two new assemblages collected from younger strata at the Hambach mine (Hambach 11C and 14). -
Carnivora from the Late Miocene Love Bone Bed of Florida

Baskin1 Eleven genera and twelve species of Carnivora are known from the late Miocene Love Bone Bed Local Fauna, Alachua County, Florida. Taxa from there described in detail for the first time include the canid cf. Urocyon sp., the hemicyonine ursid cf. Plithocyon sp., and the mustelids Leptarctus webbi n. sp., Hoplictis sp., and ?Sthenictis near ?S. lacota. Postcrania of the nimravid Barbourofelis indicate that it had a subdigitigrade posture and most likely stalked and ambushed its prey in dense cover. The postcranial morphology of Nimravides (Felidae) is most similar to the jaguar, Panthera onca. The carnivorans strongly support a latest Clarendonian age assignment for the Love Bone Bed. Although the Love Bone Bed local fauna does show some evidence of endemism at the species level, it demonstrates that by the late Clarendonian, Florida had become part of the Clarendonian chronofauna of the midcontinent, in contrast to the higher endemism present in the early Miocene and in the later Miocene and Pliocene of Florida. Nippon Suisan Gakkaishi 59(12), 2025-2030 (1993) Relative Growth and Sexual Dimorphism in the Red Frog Crab Ranina ranina (Decapoda: Raninidae) Megumi Minagawa* (Received July 9, 1993) The relative growth of several body parts and the morphology of pleopods were examined in reared and captured individuals of Ranina ranina. Sexual dimorphism occurred in the pleopods at instar I, on the abdomen of individuals over 34mm carapace length, and on the cheliped in individuals over 70mm carapace. In females puberty molt was estimated to occur at 40-45mm carapace length, using the relative growth of abdomen width . In males the relationship between dactylus or propodus length of the cheliped and the carapace length was described by two or three power regression equations. The point of contact of the logarithmical ly transformed linear equations was 26 and 74mm in dactylus length and 73mm in propodus length. A growth-reproduction model of R. ranina based on changes in the relative growth is discussed. The red frog crab Ranina ranina Linnaeus is a commercially important crab found on sandy bot toms in the Indo-West Pacific.1,2) Some aspects of the reproductive biology of R. ranina have been reported, including information on the reproduc tive cycle, ovigerous season, and minimum size to maturity in Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, and Australia.3-8) However, information on the re lationship between growth and reproduction is fragmentary. A Probable Case of Heterochrony in the Solutan
A probable case of heterochrony in the solutan Dendrocystites Barrande, 1887 (Echinodermata: Blastozoa) from the Upper Ordovician of the Prague Basin (Czech Republic) and a revision of the family Dendrocystitidae Bassler, 1938 FLEUR NOAILLES, BERTRAND LEFEBVRE & LIBOR KAIÈKA The morphology of the Late Ordovician solutan Dendrocystites is reevaluated based on more than 300 specimens from the Letná and Zahořany formations (Prague Basin, Czech Republic). This genus is reported for the first time from the Bohdalec Formation, and its presence is confirmed in the Vinice Formation. The morphology of all specimens of the stratigraphically older species D. barrandei (Sandbian) is identical to that of small to medium-size individuals of D. sedgwicki (Katian). Distinctive characters of D. sedgwicki occur only in the largest specimens, and are all size-related (more asymmetrical thecal outlines, stronger ornamentation, rosetting pattern of thecal plates, proliferation of platelets in the proxistele). Consequently, the transition from D. barrandei to D. sedgwicki is interpreted as the result of heterochronic processes, with the largest individuals of D. sedgwicki displaying hyperadult morphologies (hyper- morphosis). Dendrocystites is locally abundant in both the Letná and Zahořany formations, but extremely rare in the deeper deposits of the Vinice and Bohdalec formations. This pattern coincides closely with first order fluctuations of the sea-level in the Prague Basin. The life orientation and implied feeding strategy of Dendrocystites and other solutans are both critically discussed. Several independent lines of evidence suggest that solutans were more likely detritus-feeders. Finally, it is proposed that two morphologically distinct patterns of dististele organization were elaborated independently from the polyplated, undifferentiated stalk-like appendage of Coleicarpus (plesiomorphic condition). -
