These two Canadians have made Canada proud. They are known as sport champions in the world. One of them is a hockey player and the other is an athlete. Subban” is a professional Canadian ice hockey player. He is a famous NHL player (National Hockey League). Subban plays defence. He was born May 13, 1989 in Toronto. P.K.’s career in hockey started at a very early age when he learned to skate. P.K.’s dad, Karl also known as “Big Karl”, came to Canada from Jamaica. His mother, Maria also known as “Mama Subban”, came to Canada from Montserrat. P.K. has four siblings: : Nastassia, Natasha, Jordan, and Malcolm. Hockey is a family sport for the Subbans. Malcom, Jordan, and P.K. all played for the Belleville Bulls in their junior hockey careers. The Belleville Bulls is a junior ice hockey team in Ontario. Malcolm is a goalie and was chosen to play for the Boston Bruins in 2012. Jordan was chosen to play for the Vancouver Canucks in 2013. In 2007, P.K. was chosen to play for the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. In 2016, he was traded to play for the Nashville Predators. Even though he no longer plays for the Montreal Canadiens, he still keeps in touch with his fans. In 2015, he made a huge donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. His foundation, will give $10 million to the hospital over 7 years. In recognition of this donation, the hospital named its atrium in honour of P.K. Subban. Donovan Bailey One of the greatest sprinters of all time, Donovan Bailey, was an Olympic athlete who won gold medals for Canada at the 1996 Summer Olympics. At the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia, he won the men’s 100m race in record time – 9.84 seconds. He was also a part of the relay team that won a gold medal. He moved to Canada in 1981 when he was 13 years old. During high school he played basketball. He took up sprinting seriously as a sport in 1994, when he was 27 years old. In 1995, he won the 100m sprint and 4x100m relay titles at the World Track and Field Championships in Sweden.     February 26, 2021 Black History Month person of note is Donovan Bailey, who is now a retired Jamaican-Canadian athlete who is regarded as the greatest Canadian sprinter of all time. He once held the world record for the 100 metre sprint, recording a time of 9.84 seconds to win the Gold Medal at the 1996 Olympics. Usain Bolt of Jamaica surpassed that record in 2009 with a 100 metre dash of 9.58 seconds. Virtual open house is next Monday, March 1st.     DIVISION I 103 Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I 2001 Championships OUTDOOR TRACK Highlights Volunteers Are Victorious: Tennessee used a strong performance from its sprinters to edge TCU by a point May 30-June 2 at Oregon. The Volunteers earned their third title with 50 points, as the championship-clinching point was scored by the 1,600-meter relay team in the final event of the meet. Knowing it only had to finish the event to secure the point to break the tie with TCU, Tennessee’s unit passed the baton careful- ly and placed eighth. Justin Gatlin played the key role in getting Tennessee into position to win by capturing the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Gatlin was the meet’s only individual double winner. Sean Lambert supported Gatlin’s effort by finishing fourth in the 100. His position was another important factor in Tennessee’s victory, as he placed just ahead of a pair of TCU competitors. Gatlin and Lambert composed half of the Volunteers’ 400-meter relay team that was second. TCU was led by Darvis Patton, who was third in the 200, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 100. Klasse, 4 Jahre Spracherwerb The fastest immigrant in Canada “Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don’t let anyone limit your dreams”, is Donovan Bailey´s answer to Paul Irish´s question on what he would say to today´s kids on the subject of success. The interview was published in the Toronto Star on November 28th in 2011. Bailey, who immigrated to Canada as a teenager, is not only a successful businessman, he also won two gold medals at the Olympic games in Atlanta in 1996. He retired from his athletic career in 2001. Apart from investing in several business ventures, he founded the Donovan Bailey Fund to help Canada’s amateur athletes (The Famous People, n.d.). I chose to write about Donovan Bailey, the fastest immigrant in Canada, because he was not only a successful athlete, but also a successful businessman before he focused on his athletic career. Donovan Bailey, the son of Daisy and George Bailey, was born on December 16th, 1967 in Manchester, Jamaica. As long as they lived in Jamaica, he used to wake up early in the morning and take care of the family’s pigs, chickens and goats before going to school. After school, he used to play soccer (The Famous People, n.d.). In 1981, when he was 13 years old, his family immigrated to Canada hoping for a better life and he lived with his father and four brothers in Oakville, a suburban town in Ontario.
