  • Meyer Retiring As Day Becomes Head Coach
Ohio State: Meyer Retiring As Day Becomes Head Coach Ohio State announced Tuesday morning that head football coach Urban Meyer is set to retire after the Buckeyes play in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. Offensive coordinator Ryan Day will be named head coach, the school said. Athletic director Gene Smith, Meyer and Day are scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 p.m. to formally announced the changes. Meyer took over as Ohio State’s head coach in 2012 after previously serving as a graduate assistant in Columbus from 1986-87 under Earle Bruce, his longtime mentor. He has compiled an 82-9 record with the Buckeyes, including an undefeated season in 2012 (Ohio State wasn’t eligible for the postseason that year) and a national title in 2014 in the first-ever College Football Playoff. He previously served as head coach at Florida (2005-10), Utah (2003-04) and Bowling Green (2001-02). Meyer has struggled with headaches for much of his career, an issue that stems from an arachnoid cyst on his brain. He could be seen dropping to his knees on the sideline during an October contest against Indiana, and often showed signs of the headaches throughout this season overall. He had previously said he planned on coaching in 2019, but never unequivocally said he would be back. Just before the start of fall camp this year, Meyer was placed on paid administrative leave amid a university investigation into his handling of the employment of former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, who was fired in July.

His Auburn players already possessed everything they needed a generation ago to overcome NCAA probation and the loss of hope it can foster. "There was a lot of pride and hunger in the older players, who remembered the teams of the 1980s, when Auburn produced NFL players and was in the top five in the country year after year," said Bowden, the new coach at Akron, of the 1993 Auburn Tigers. In 1991, Auburn had a 5-6 record. In 1992, the Tigers were 5-5-1. UCLA’s Chip Kelly: Ohio State’s Ryan Day Built To Lead Buckeyes As Urban Meyer’s Successor When the Ohio State football team turned to Ryan Day before its 2018 season began, the second-year offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach replaced seventh-year head coach Urban Meyer for the Buckeyes’ first three games with quiet confidence. Part of Day’s self-belief was reassured late last August when his mentor, UCLA head coach Chip Kelly, shot him a text message amid the news. As controversy swirled in Columbus with Meyer’s three-game suspension for the mismanagement of former wide receivers coach Zach Smith, Kelly’s sentiments to Day were simple. “He says, ‘You’re built for this,'” Day said Aug. 28. “That’s what he told me. And that’s the thing I keep going to every morning when I wake up is that I’m built for this.” Kelly was right. After he led OSU to its 3-0 start with wins over Oregon State (77-31, Sept. 1), Rutgers (52-3, Sept. 8) and then-No. 15 TCU (40-28, Sept. 15), his explosive offense finished second in college football (535.6 total yards per game) as the program went 13-1 overall with Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles. Day succeeded Meyer, who announced his retirement Dec. 4 and transitioned to assistant athletics director of athletics initiatives and relations, as he took over Jan. 2 and kept the machine running. “It’s not that he won an interview,” Kelly told USA TODAY’s George Schroeder. “It’s that his day-to-day work over the two-year span that he was there gave them confidence that he would be able to take on that role.

Not many coaches can win three national titles at two different programs and be so hated and loved by such a wide range of fans. That is the complicated and mixed legacy that Meyer will leave at his grad school alma mater, as this past season was one marked with controversy following the fallout of former wide receivers coach Zach Smith’s domestic violence case and his failure to properly report it to administrators. The rewards have never been greater. As for job security, let’s just say it’s best to have a real estate agent on speed dial. But even if it’s only for a few years, the chance to run a major college football program is an opportunity just about any coach would take. “It’s tougher because we’re being held accountable and responsible for these young men 24 hours a day,” said South Florida’s Skip Holtz, the son of Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz who is entering his 14th year as a head coach. “We’re held to a higher standard academically. We’re being asked to win. And win now. We’re not quite as patient as we once were. So I think it’s changed a little bit. I don’t think it’s for the bad. I think if you’re the head coach, you should be held responsible for those things.” This season, 28 of the 124 schools that play in the Football Bowl Subdivision will have a new man being held responsible for the program, including Penn State, where Bill O’Brien takes a job the late Joe Paterno held for 46 years and then lost in the Jerry Sandusky scandal. That list also includes some big names returning to the sideline, such as Urban Meyer at Ohio State, Rich Rodriguez at Arizona and Mike Leach at Washington State.
