OPUS - AN ORGANISATION FOR PROMOTING UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIETY

ERIC MILLER ANNUAL MEMORIAL LECTURE

SATURDAY 21st MARCH 2009, 11.45am to 3.00 pm

The Ambassadors Hotel, 12 Upper Woburn Place, WC1H 9EX “THE BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY.”

Presented by

Dr WESLEY CARR

Wesley was for over forty years a priest in the Church of , serving mostly in Cathedrals. Parallel with much of this work was his association with the Tavistock Institute. He has worked on the staff of Conferences both in the UK and the USA, directing many including Leicester. As he organized many National events, including Diana’s funeral and the service for the families of British 9/11 victims. He retired early on health grounds (Parkinson’s and throat cancer) but continues to write and consult.

The Lecture will consider three areas of significance in the world of Group Relations and the development of its theory and practice. They are central in the work of Eric Miller but are locked in the customary language of the Conference brochure – authority, leadership and organization. They then may become a mantra and perhaps hinder rather than help. Wesley Carr will take three themes and reflect on them with numerous stories and illustrations from his experience in Group Relations work over a period of more than thirty year: 1. Learning and the happy fault (the two essential foundations of all learning, training and consultancy – learning and opportunity); 2. Pervasive dependency (self-explanatory; but because dependency is such a feared dynamic sufficient attention may not have been given to the theory. A tentative restructuring is suggested); 3. Finally, remembering that life should not always be heavily serious, the reflection turns to some thoughts on the role of patron.

The Lecture will formally end at 2.00pm, after which you are cordially invited to join our guests for drinks and snacks until 3.00pm.

Fee £35 (includes wine & snacks). For information please contact as follows: OPUS, 26 Fernhurst Road, London SW6 7JW; 020 7736 3844; [email protected]
