FLYERS VS. BRUINS

This is the sixth meeting between the Flyers and Bruins this season and the first since the teams faced off in the Honda NHL Outdoors contest at Lake Tahoe. The clubs will wrap up their season series with three games against one another this week – tonight’s contest, and then two at Wells Fargo Center tomorrow and Saturday.

Thu. January 21 @ Boston 5-4 L (SO) Sat. January 23 @ Boston 6-1 L Wed. February 3 vs. Boston 4-3 L (OT) Fri. February 5 vs. Boston 2-1 L Sun. February 21 @ Boston (Lake Tahoe, NV) Mon. April 5 @ Boston Tue. April 6 vs. Boston Sat. April 10 vs. Boston

This will be the first season in which the Flyers and Bruins face one another eight times. The previous high was six, which took place in each of four consecutive years from 1968-69 through 1971-72. The Flyers didn’t win a game against Boston in the last three of those seasons, going 0-4-2 in 1969- 70 and 0-6-0 in each of the next two seasons. All four years were part of a stretch where the Flyers didn’t win a regular-season game in Boston from 1968-69 through 1975-76; their only win in Boston during that time was their historic victory in Game 2 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Final on an overtime goal by Bobby Clarke, which enabled the Flyers to win their first Stanley Cup with victories in the three games in Philadelphia.

This the first time the Flyers and Bruins have ever competed in the same division. The Flyers were placed in the West Division with the other five teams from the 1967 expansion until 1974, when the Flyers were placed in the Patrick Division and the Bruins in the Adams Division for an alignment that lasted the next 20 seasons. In 1993, the Bruins shifted to the Northeast Division while Philadelphia went to the Atlantic, and that alignment stayed in place for another 20 years until the most recent realignment placed Boston in the Atlantic Division and the Flyers in the Metropolitan.

The Flyers have gone 2-1 against the Bruins in each of the last two seasons. You have to go back to the mid-1980s to find the last time the Flyers had an above-.500 record against Boston in two consecutive campaigns – they were 2-1 in four consecutive seasons from 1984-85 to 1987-88.

The March 10, 2020 loss to the Bruins was the final game of the 2019-20 season for both teams. That loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Flyers against Boston, something that they had never done before. Prior to a shootout win on January 13, 2020, the Flyers had never won more than three in a row against the Bruins. LAST MEETING

Sunday, February 21, 2021 – Boston 7, Flyers 3 at Edgewood Resort, Lake Tahoe: Three Boston goals in a 99-second span in the second period changed the course of what had been a one-goal game, leading to the win for the Bruins. After David Pastrnak scored 34 seconds into the contest, the Flyers answered with goals from Joel Farabee and Sean Couturier to make it 2-1. Charlie McAvoy scored with 4:33 left in the first period to knot the score at 2-2 in the first intermission, and another first-minute goal from Pastrnak made it 3-2 early in the second. The trio of goals came from Charlie Coyle at 16:14, Trent Frederic at 16:47 and Nick Ritchie on the power play at 17:53, which made it 6-2 at the second intermission. James van Riemsdyk tallied on the power play with 7:15 left to play, and Pastrnak closed out the scoring when he completed the hat trick with 2:56 left. Carter Hart made 17 saves on 23 shots in the first two periods before stepping aside for Brian Elliott, who stopped 11 of 12 in the third. Tuukka Rask earned the win with 16 stops.

LAST GAME

Saturday, April 3, 2021 – NY Islanders 3, Flyers 2 (SO) at Nassau Coliseum: Claude Giroux scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit, but Mathew Barzal scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Islanders the extra point. Anthony Beauvillier provided both of the Islanders’ goals, scoring on the power play with 7:59 left in the first period and adding a second at even strength with 4:20 left in the second. Giroux got the Flyers on the board 6:38 into the third period and followed up with the equalizer just under four minutes later. Carter Hart returned to the net and made 22 saves on 24 shots, while Ilya Sorokin turned away 30 of 32. Stars of the Game: 1 – Anthony Beauvillier; 2 - Claude Giroux; 3 – Ilya Sorokin.

NOTABLES

Jake Voracek and Travis Konecny each had two-assist nights on the strength of setting up both Giroux goals. It’s Konecny’s second multi-assist game at Nassau Coliseum this season, after having a three-assist game on March 18, and it’s Voracek’s fourth multi-point game in his last 12 games.

Travis Sanheim co-led the team with four shots on goal and led with nine overall shot attempts.

The Flyers had 57 total shot attempts to New York’s 36.

Tanner Laczynski made his NHL debut. He recorded one shot, one hit, one blocked shot and went 3-for-3 on faceoffs in 8:17 of ice time. He became the fifth member of the Flyers’ 2016 draft class to appear in an NHL game and is the first player selected by the Flyers in the sixth round or later to debut with them since the 2010-11 season, when two players did so – Eric Wellwood (6th round in 2009, debut Nov. 1, 2010) and Zac Rinaldo (6th round in 2008, debut April 22, 2011 in playoffs).

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

Sean Couturier had a five-game point streak come to an end on Saturday night. He had four goals and four assists for eight points in the span, which was his third streak of four games or more this season. Couturier has 10 goals and 16 assists in his last 23 games since returning from injury on February 7; he has at least a point in 18 of the 23 games since returning.

Couturier is on a 1.08 point-per-game pace, which would be the best of his career. Couturier’s career high for points in a season is 76, done twice – in 80 games in 2018-19 and in 82 games in 2017-18. The 18-19 PPG average of 0.95 is his career high in that category. Couturier’s current pace would put him at 89 points over a full 82-game season.

Jake Voracek is on a three-game assist streak, with four in that run of games. He has seven assists over his last seven games. Earlier this season, Voracek climbed into fifth place in Flyers history in assists.

Kevin Hayes has goals in two of the last five games after going eight games without a tally prior to that. Since Hayes joined the team at the start of the 2019-20 season, the Flyers are 26-3-2 when he scores a goal.

Joel Farabee leads the Flyers with 14 goals on the season. That also leads the league among all players age 22 or younger. Twelve of those goals have come at even strength.

Vigneault led the Flyers to one of the NHL’s best turnarounds in 2019-20. At the time of the NHL’s pause of the season due to COVID-19, the Flyers had played 69 games and were 41-21-7 for 89 points, good for the sixth-best record in the league and fourth-best in the Eastern Conference. Vigneault was the runner-up in voting for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year for his work in engineering the turnaround.

Vigneault enters the 2020-21 season with 1,285 games of experience as an NHL head coach over parts of 17 seasons. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, he served as the head coach of the New York Rangers for five seasons (2013-18), the Vancouver Canucks for seven seasons (2006-13) and the Montreal Canadiens for parts of four seasons (1997-2000). He also served as the head coach for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, guiding the squad to a silver medal.
