Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. • Vipers' Head Coach Resigns Meet
Vipers’ Head Coach Resigns Larry Brown resigns from his position due to medical issues Florence, SC – February 12, 2014 – The Pee Dee Vipers’ Head Coach, Larry Brown, has resigned from his position as a consequence of medical concerns and precautions. Brown and the Vipers took into consideration the long-term health of Brown and productivity of the team when making this decision. Brown does not feel that he can adequately provide the Vipers with the standard of coaching he is accustom to contributing and focus on improving his health at the same time. The entire Vipers Organization backs Brown in his decision and will continue to support him during his journey to good health. Andre Bovain has been named Head Coach. Bovain served as the Vipers’ Assistant Coach under Brown. NBA legend and Columbia, SC native, Xavier McDaniel will be one of the Vipers’ assistant coaches. Bryan Hergenroether will also join the Vipers’ coaching staff. The Vipers’ new coaching staff will leave much of what Brown has developed in place; plays and structure will be similar. Brown and Bovain worked closely to ensure that the coaching transition will be smooth and not dramatically impact the team’s winning style of play. Xavier McDaniel: • Played in college at Wichita State (1981-1985) • 4th overall in the 1985 NBA draft to the Seattle SuperSonics • Played 14 seasons in the NBA (1985-1998) • NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1986 • NBA All-Star in 1988 • Career Stats (NBA): Points – 13,606; Rebounds – 5,313; Assists – 1,775 • Played against names such as Magic Johnson,

  • The First Question Any Social Enterprise Should Be Asking
JERR’S JOURNAL July 17, 2014 The first question any social enterprise should be asking . I once spent three days working with The Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, a safe haven for indigent men who needed a place to stay and nourishing food for up to seven days. The CEO asked me to meet with his entire Board and staff, help them understand social enterprise, and then facilitate a closing discussion about the shelter’s strategic direction. The first question I asked during the discussion came right from Peter Drucker’s playbook. In his seminal work The Practice of Management , he wrote that because the question “is so rarely asked – at least in a clear and sharp form -- and (is) so rarely given adequate study and thought, (it) is perhaps the most important single cause of business failure.” The question? “What business are you in?” Shouldn’t be that hard to answer, should it? Well . * * * * * Does anybody here remember Jack McKinney? During the summer of 1979, the Los Angeles Lakers hired an obscure, 44-year-old assistant coach from Portland to coach a team that featured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the five-time NBA MVP, and a rookie point guard named Magic Johnson. Now, I grew up worshipping the (then) Minneapolis Lakers, even played in an abbreviated grade school game against one of our hated enemies during halftime of a Lakers game at the Minneapolis Auditorium. Those were the George Mikan, Jim Pollard, Vern Mikkelsen Lakers -- the original Big Three -- who won five NBA titles in six seasons from 1949 through 1954.

Figueroa Street, Room 1510 Los Angeles, CA 90012 Re: The Greek Theatre Concession Award - Response to Mayer Brown Letters of October 8, 2014 and October 20, 2014 Dear President Patsaouras and Honorable Commissioners: On behalf of Live Nation Worldwide, Inc. ("Live Nation"), we write in response to the October 8, 2014 and October 20, 2014 letters from Nederlander-AEG's legal counsel. Unfortunately, these letters are nothing more than additional attempts to confuse and delay the process after your staff and a five person independent panel of experts (the "Evaluation Panel") unanimously found that Live Nation by far delivered the superior proposal to operate the Greek Theatre for the next 20 years. Live Nation scored a total of 455 points out of a possible 500, whereas Nederlander-AEG only scored 396. Live Nation delivered a vastly superior proposal - it is that simple. This letter will demonstrate, and even the most cursory review of the two proposals will confirm, that Nederlander-AEG's proposal - like Nederlander's current operation of the Greek Theatre - leaves much to be desired. Whether it's the Nederlander-AEG proposal's inappropriate use of Patina Group venue photographs (Patina Group is not Nederlander's, but Live Nation's food and beverage partner), a capital improvement contribution that isn't even half of Live Nation's, or a misleading pro forma projecting revenue from up to 80 shows when the proposal guarantees 50 shows elsewhere, the 40-year incumbent's proposal was so flawed that it could only have come from a company with a self-entitled belief that it, and not the people of Los Angeles, own the Greek Theatre.

DOWNTRODDEN YET DETERMINED: EXPLORING THE HISTORY OF BLACK MALES IN PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL AND HOW THE PLAYERS ASSOCIATION ADDRESSES THEIR WELFARE A Dissertation by JUSTIN RYAN GARNER Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, John N. Singer Committee Members, Natasha Brison Paul J. Batista Tommy J. Curry Head of Department, Melinda Sheffield-Moore May 2019 Major Subject: Kinesiology Copyright 2019 Justin R. Garner ABSTRACT Professional athletes are paid for their labor and it is often believed they have a weaker argument of exploitation. However, labor disputes in professional sports suggest athletes do not always receive fair compensation for their contributions to league and team success. Any professional athlete, regardless of their race, may claim to endure unjust wages relative to their fellow athlete peers, yet Black professional athletes’ history of exploitation inspires greater concerns. The purpose of this study was twofold: 1) to explore and trace the historical development of basketball in the United States (US) and the critical role Black males played in its growth and commercial development, and 2) to illuminate the perspectives and experiences of Black male professional basketball players concerning the role the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), collectively considered as the Players Association for this study, played in their welfare and addressing issues of exploitation. While drawing from the conceptual framework of anti-colonial thought, an exploratory case study was employed in which in-depth interviews were conducted with a list of Black male professional basketball players who are members of the Players Association.
