Finalment, vull concloure aquest apartat, com no, destacant el suport de la meua família, que m’han demostrat sempre estar al meu costat. viii Resum Els entocitèrids són una família d’ostracodes (Crustacea), majoritàriament d’origen americà, ectosimbionts (bàsicament comensals) d’altres crustacis, principalment decàpodes d’aigua dolça. Les darreres dècades, els carrancs natius europeus s’han vist perjudicats per la inva- sió de carrancs exòtics, degut a fenòmens d’exclusió competitiva i transmissió de simbionts parasitaris. En la present tesi, hem avaluat la presència d’entocitèrids associats a carrancs de riu (natius i exòtics) a Europa. Hem contribuït a sentar unes bases bibliogràfiques i metodològiques per a l’estudi dels entocitèrids. S’ha analitzat l’especificitat d’hoste d’En- tocytheridae i el patró latitudinal de riquesa de les espècies americanes del grup. També hem estudiat els factors abiòtics i biòtics que afecten la distribució i els paràmetres pobla- cionals d’un entocitèrid exòtic. Finalment, hem testat la transmissió d’entocitèrids exòtics a carrancs de riu europeus sota condicions experimentals. Per primera vegada, hem regis- trat la presència a Europa de dues espècies d’entocitèrids exòtics (Ankylocythere sinuosa i Uncinocythere occidentalis) associats a carrancs de riu invasors d’origen americà (Procam- barus clarkii i Pacifastacus leniusculus). Hem aportat una base de dades georeferenciada d’escala global d’accés lliure i gratuït per a la comunitat científica, els llistats actualitzats de les espècies i la bibliografia del grup, i informació pràctica per l’establiment de protocols de mostreig d’entocitèrids. Hem pogut constatar que l’especialització en una única espècie d’hoste no és majoritària en els entocitèrids. D’altra banda, els entocitèrids americans mos- tren un patró inhabitual de distribució de riquesa d’espècies amb la latitud, probablement, relacionat amb el vincle evolutiu amb els seus hostes. El nostre model de simbiont, A. sinuo- sa, suposadament no parasitari, s’ajustà a tres patrons generals en ecologia de poblacions de macroparàsits, suggerint que algunes regles poblacionals establertes en paràsits podrien ser regles més generals dels simbionts. Les poblacions exòtiques d’ A. sinuosa es veieren marca- dament afectades per les condicions climàtiques i limnològiques, mostrant que alguns grups particulars de simbionts poden ser especialment sensibles a la variabilitat ambiental, per exemple els ectosimbionts d’aigua dolça no parasitaris, com els entocitèrids. D’acord amb els nostres resultats, l’expansió d’un simbiont exòtic com A. sinuosa podria veure’s afectada per filtres espacials restrictius deguts a limitacions climàtiques del simbiont, els quals im- plicarien la pèrdua del simbiont en aquelles àrees envaïdes per l’hoste afectades pels filtres. Finalment, hem confirmat la transmissió de l’entocitèrid exòtic, A. sinuosa, a un carranc de riu natiu europeu, sota condicions experimentals. Per tant, seria convenient avaluar experi- mentalment el grau d’amenaça real per a la conservació del carranc europeu que suposaria l’esdeveniment en cas d’ocórrer en la natura. ix Resumen Los entocitéridos son una familia de ostrácodos (Crustacea), mayoritariamente de origen americano, ectosimbiontes (básicamente comensales) de otros crustáceos, principalmente decápodos de agua dulce. Durante las últimas décadas, los cangrejos de río nativos europeos se han visto perjudicados por la invasión de cangrejos exóticos, debido a fenómenos de ex- clusión competitiva y transmisión de simbiontes parasitarios. En la presente tesis, hemos evaluado la presencia de entocitéridos asociados a cangrejos de río (nativos y exóticos) en Eu- ropa. Hemos contribuido a sentar unas bases bibliográficas y metodológicas para el estudio de los entocitéridos. Se han analizado la especificidad de hospedador de los Entocytheridae y el patrón latitudinal de riqueza del grupo. También hemos estudiado los factores abióticos y bióticos que afectan a la distribución y los parámetros poblacionales de un entocitérido exó- tico. Finalmente, hemos testado la transmisión de entocitéridos exóticos a cangrejos de río europeos bajo condiciones experimentales. A total of 320 samples were collected from surface, interstitial and ground waters. Whenever possible, ostracod identification was performed at species level based on the morphology of both valves and limbs. Seventy-four taxa in 30 genera belonging to 9 different families (Darwinulidae, Candonidae, Ilyocyprididae, Notodromadidae, Cyprididae, Limnocytheridae, Cytheridae, Leptocytheridae and Xestoleberididae) were identified. The maximum number of taxa per site was seven. The most common species was Cypria ophthalmica (133 records), followed by Cyclocypris ovum (86 records), C. laevis (49 records), Cypridopsis vidua (40 records) and Notodromas persica (28 records). Of particular relevance is the occurrence of six species new to Italy: Microdarwinula zimmeri, Penthesilenula brasiliensis, Fabaeformiscandona wegelini, Pseudocandona semicognita, Candonopsis scourfieldi, and C. mediosetosa. Scanning electron microscopy images of valves are provided for most of the described taxa. Geographical distribution of ostracods and their occurrence in relation to environmental variables were examined.

En el presente trabajo se muestra la primera cita del ostrácodo Heterocypris bosniaca Petkowski, Scharf y Keyser, 2000 para la Península Ibérica. Se trata de una especie de cipridoideo muy poco conocida que habita pozas de aguas temporales. Se descubrió el año 2000 en Bosnia y desde entonces solo se ha reportado su presencia en Israel (2004) y en Valencia (presente trabajo).

In particular, the freshwater ostracod Heterocypris incongruens has been repeatedly used for toxicity test (Chial Belgis at al. 2003, Oleszczuk, 2008, Kuldak at al., 2011, Havel et al., 1995). Heterocypris incongruens is a cosmopolitan and common species, inhabiting shallow seasonal (summer) pools and small water bodies (Meisch 2000). Heterocypris incongruens is tolerant of different temperatures, salinities variations and can stand low oxygen concentration and organic pollution (Mezquita et al. 1999; Meisch 2000). Lineages that are at least superficially morphologically identical, but are genetically distinct, are usually misclassified as a single nominal species, while they actually belong to a cryptic species complex (Feckler et al. 2012). Genetic studies have detected cryptic diversity in many animal taxa including ostracods (Crustacea) (e.g. Bode et al. 2010; Schön et al. 2012), with the general implication that there are many more species than were previously recognised (Scheffers et al.

FINGER1*,SANDA IEPURE2,SANDRO MARIANI3, ALESSANDRO MONTANARI4, AND TADEUSZ NAMIOTKO5 Abstract: Rich, diverse assemblages comprising a total (live + dead) of twenty-one ostracod species belonging to fifteen genera were recovered from phreatic waters of the hypogenic Frasassi Cave system and the adjacent Frasassi sulfidic spring and Sentino River in the Marche region of the northeastern Apennines of Italy. Specimens were recovered from ten sites, eight of which were in the phreatic waters of the cave system and sampled at different times of the year over a period of five years. Approximately 6900 specimens were recovered, the vast majority of which were disarticulated valves; live ostracods were also collected. The most abundant species in the sulfidic spring and Sentino River were Prionocypris zenkeri, Herpetocypris chevreuxi,andCypridopsis vidua, while the phreatic waters of the cave system were dominated by two putatively new stygobitic species of Mixtacandona and Pseudolimnocythere and a species that was also abundant in the sulfidic spring, Fabaeformiscandona ex gr. F. fabaeformis. Pseudocandona ex gr. P. eremita, likely another new stygobitic species, is recorded for the first time in Italy. The relatively high diversity of the ostracod assemblages at Frasassi could be attributed to the heterogeneity of groundwater and associated habitats or to niche partitioning promoted by the creation of a chemoautotrophic ecosystem based on sulfur-oxidizing bacteria.

Breve definición del grupo y principales caracteres diagnósticos Según el criterio más extendido actualmente, y que aquí seguiremos, se considera a los ostrácodos como una clase (Cl. Ostracoda) del Subphylum Crustacea, perteneciente al Phylum Arthropoda. No obstante, existen autores que defienden su pertenencia, como subclase, a la clase Maxillopoda (que incluiría tam- bién a branquiuros, tantulocáridos, copépodos y cirrípedos, entre otros). Más allá de esta circunstancia, los ostrácodos pueden describirse como crustáceos de tamaño mediano a pequeño (desde los 0,2 a los 5 mm; con casos excepcionales que alcanzan los 3 cm), que poseen un ojo naupliar medial, con la segmen- tación corporal severamente reducida, entre cinco y ocho pares de apéndices y, como elemento más significativo, la presencia de un caparazón bivalvo. Aunque el caparazón contiene en sí mismo rasgos diagnósticos (tamaño, forma, ornamentación...) que ayudan a la correcta asignación taxonómica de los ostrácodos, su presencia—que obstaculiza la observación in vivo de muchos detalles diagnósticos del animal— y el pequeño tamaño de estos organismos obligan con frecuencia a la disección de los ejempla- res para su identificación, especialmente para la identificación a nivel específico.
