Since this isn't the first time you've been here, you may be interested in downloading the guide to 20 Amazing Offbeat Places in Paris. Click here to get a free copy right now! If you want to understand the features of a Gothic cathedral or church, you can find a lot of information on the internet. However, there are two reasons why books are still a good option. First of all, I love reading a paper document myself. Secondly, not everything (yet) can be found on the Internet ... Books offer more specialized information with high-quality illustrations that you rarely get online. This small selection of my favorite Gothic art books will definitely help you if you are visiting a Gothic church in France or just want to learn more from your chair! My pick of the best books on Gothic art There are many resources available at your local or online store. The problem is, which book to choose? By the way, the choice of a book is often a personal action. You can enjoy the look of the lid, whether it's a paperback or a hardcover. Maybe, like me, you are reasonable to the quality of illustrations ... and when reading is too technical... Well, you just read diagonally (hoping it will be easier later!)) What will be next short of a selection of my favorite books that you can order online (I'm not looking for books that can only be found by accident on the flea market or that aren't published anymore).

I'd been in and around Munich during my very first visit to Europe back about1970, and even had a chance to play the old organ (since replaced) in Benediktbeuron. This was a revelation to a young student who had never before laid hands on an old keyboard, nor thought about how one must phrase and the tempos one must adopt when playing into a voluminous room with a lengthy acoustic decay.

  • St Gwynllyw's Cathedral, Newport
Archaeologia Cambrensis 155 (2006), 163–185 St Gwynllyw’s Cathedral, Newport: the Romanesque archway By J. K. K NIGHT and RITA WOOD From east to west, St Gwynllyw’s cathedral (now Anglicised to ‘St Woolos’) comprises four architectural elements—a modern chancel of 1960–64, designed for the liturgical needs of the newly-elevated cathedral of the diocese of Monmouth; a Romanesque nave with enlarged aisles and a large south porch added by the Stafford Dukes of Buckingham between 1424 and 1483; a western chapel of thirteenth- century date communicating with the nave through a Romanesque arch, and a west tower attributed to Jasper Tudor, lord of Newport from 1485 to 1495. 1 This paper is concerned with the arch between the nave and the western chapel and with the carvings on the capitals above the two reused Roman columns incorporated in it. The historical sources The ancient pre-Norman clas or minster church of St Gwynllyw at Newport was granted to St Peter’s Abbey in Gloucester (now Gloucester cathedral) by Robert de la Haya sometime between 1093 and 1104. 2 Our knowledge of its pre-Norman and early Norman history, and of its community of canons under a dean ( decanus ) derives from a twelfth-century Life, the Vita Gundleii , in London, British Library Ms Cotton Vespasian A XIV 3 and from documents relating to a prolonged dispute over the validity of Robert de la Haya’s grant which took place between 1123 and 1156 between St Peter’s Abbey and the lords of Newport, the earls of Gloucester.

Baker “Be You as Living Stones Built Up, A Spiritual House, A Holy Priesthood”: Cistercian Exegesis, Reforms, and the Construction of Holy Architectures ABSTRACT The development of the Cistercian Order in the twelfth century came as a product of a number of eleventh-century reforms. These reforms affected all strata of society, and they impacted the way in which medieval European Christians viewed themselves, their social, political, and theological structures, the world around them, and their relationship to the Christian narrative of salvation history and eschatology.
