What if groceries could be delivered directly to your fridge?

In our quest for future business models, the Group IoT team, together with Mat.se, Kolonial.no, Yale Doorman digital lock and Gjensidige, is currently testing a concept around in-home delivery.

Internet of Things is changing our homes into smart-homes. To cater to this, Telenor is exploring new positions in industry verticals where new business models will emerge based on sensor data and analytics. Three key segments include; smart homes, smart buildings and smart cars.

Pilot project exploring In-Home delivery

This fall, a project team, is conducting a pilot for deliveries into homes using digital keys – without the customer needing to be at home. The “Tikky”-service (name of the test pilot) will secure that a digital key can give service providers such as Mat.se and Kolonial.no temporary access with Yale Doorman (Assa, TrioVing) digital lock, to deliver inside the door or even into the fridge. After the delivery the digital key can no longer be used. “We believe this can be a way of making daily life easier with use of connected services. In the initial pilot we are focusing on food delivery with mat.se and kolonial.no as partners, Assa Abloy Scandinavia for the digital lock (Yale Doorman), and Gjensidige for a complementary ,” says Per Simonsen, Head of Internet of Things, at Telenor Digital Businesses. In addition to the above partners, the company Safe4, assists with technology, support and installation services. “It will be our priority during the pilot, that the service is experienced both as safe and easy,” adds Simonsen.

Food delivered directly to your fridge

Together with partners a pilot solution has been built including handling of temporary accesses for service providers, digital lock communications and an end-user mobile app. “We want to test the service concept in-field and get real learnings as to how future deliveries of goods and services could be made smarter, with the use of connected technology. The pilot includes a connected door-lock for which a service provider can get a temporary code to deliver goods or services, and an app to manage lock and service deliveries”, continues Simonsen. The objective of the pilot is to test a potential solution to make future logistics of goods into the homes, smarter and more efficient. The idea is that this will benefit both service providers (more efficient logistics) and consumers (no need to be at home, easy delivery of goods / services).

Why is this area interesting for Telenor?

Digital disruption is changing the way business is done in many areas. Increasing e-commerce shopping, new innovative home-related services such as cleaning, dog-walking, and Airbnb - and an overall strong trend towards the online food sector, all pointing to more activity around the home and ultimately, your door. “Online shopping is nowadays very efficient in many aspects. However, we believe last mile logistics can be made much easier and with less friction for the consumer. We hope that the Tikky pilot can give us important learnings how Telenor can play a role within this area,” Simonsen finishes off. The pilot will be tested with approximately 50 users in in and
