He combined interesting facts and methods into a very motivational package aimed at personal development. His idea of success went far beyond monetary. Born poor, he loved to read and wanted to write. During World War II, he joined the Marines. While on duty, he began working for a radio station and developed a passion throughout his life. After the war, he became a successful CBS radio host. But then he gave up a successful corporate career. He decided to develop a radio program focused on his passion to learn, think and teach. The result was a great success, despite a number of obstacles. This book is somewhat billed as an autobiography. It is, to some extent. But it is more a summary of his observations and experiences with the principles of personal development, which he learned from his reading, personal observations and reflections on what makes a successful life. Back in the '60s and '70s, I loved listening to his radio broadcasts. In my town it was sponsored by a bank and you can call the bank to get transcripts of any show. It was unusual and wonderful. His biggest breakthrough came when he teamed up with direct marketer, Lloyd Conant, to form Nightingale-Conant Inc. to this day, the company's perhaps the largest manufacturer of educational and motivational compact days around. It all started with records, went on cassettes, and compact documents, and now MP3s. Compact documents such as The Strangest Secret and Lead the Field, as well as the work of a number of major players in the self-fulfilling industry. The basic principles of his teachings: You are what you think about, and that true success arises from finding your best way to be serving others. Now that it may seem hokey, but Nightingale makes it practical and compelling with examples of how it really works, and lots of little suggestions and tricks that make it work for you. The book is very clear and well written - fulfilling the original intention of Nightingale childhood to become a writer. It's well worth reading. I have to warn you though. It's a letter. You miss something if you don't buy one of his audio programs. I miss that deep, gravel radio voice inspiring and teaching me how I rode through those years ago. You should not miss it if you have a sincere desire for personal development and be all you can be. Maybe you don't, for now, have that serious desire. You will be after reading this book. Even if you don't know your goals or passions, his tips and methods will help. You may be surprised by the results. November 11, 2008 James appreciated it was amazing to recommend it for: Every positive motivational book ... There are a lot of great tips for focusing on what you and I really want from life. The main message for me: We are what we think about most... whether it's positive or negative! Excellent reading... Cheers, James Read ...
