Small companies must pay more for accountants; software fills gaps

BY TINA TRASTER

small is anything but beau- tiful for accountants these days. Surging demand in recent years has spurred many to leave rela- tively low-paid posts at small companies and certified public accountant firms for larger ones. Miron Building Supply is an example. The 40-year-old Brooklyn business, with 150 employees, had been paying the accounting manager in its 10- person finance department about $45,000. But when the position became vacant last year, Miron couldn’t attract any takers. To remain competitive, the company bumped up the salary 15%, or $7,000. Miron got what it needed— sort of. “I’m paying more money for less talent,” says Chief Finan- cial Officer John Grein.“There are not enough people out there to fill these jobs.” Accountants trace the shortage back to 2002, when

When Amir Levin asked him to transform the barest outlines of a concept into a three-dimensional, child-safe product, the designer agreed to charge half the rate he applies to brand-name clients. “I know what it’s like to go out on your own and take a real chance,” says Mr. Gasparino, who expects his four-year-old firm to generate as much as $200,000 in revenues this year. His designs range from consumer electronics for Samsung and housewares for Bed Bath & Beyond to teakettles and flatware for a foundry in Holland. Working with entrepreneurs, though, gives him a special thrill. “A lot of people like Amir have never gone through the developmental process before, and I take their thumbnail napkin sketch and bring it to life,” says Mr. Gasparino, whose one-man studio is in Long Island City, Queens. He is now working with Mr. Levin on developing more products under the Kaboost label.

EXPERT WEIGHS IN ON AMIR EDWARD ROGOFF, academic director of the Lawrence N. Field Center for Entrepreneurship and Small Business at Baruch College Amir Levin’s drive is typical of many fledgling entrepreneurs. What sets him apart are his financial resources, immense web of contacts and plain beginner’s luck. “Most ideas go nowhere,” says Mr. Rogoff. “They go to a bank for a loan and get turned down.” Where Mr. Levin got truly lucky, though, was in getting free guidance from a large juvenile products retailer. “Usually, you can’t even get buyers to return calls,” says Mr. Rogoff. All these factors combined to put a product on the shelves in record- breaking time—just 21 months after the birth of the idea. “Usually, it takes five years from idea to market,” he notes.

CANDACE SANDY, 38, works as the communications director for Rep. , a Democrat from Queens. But in her off hours, Ms. Sandy runs the Souls of My Sisters book imprint she launched at Kensington Publishing. SOUL FOOD In college, Ms. Sandy and her friend Dawn Marie Daniels came up with the idea of writing Souls of My Sisters, a “chicken soup for the soul” designed to inspire women. After the book was published in 2000, they received so much positive feedback that they decided to create their own imprint. “Our message is universal,” Ms. Sandy explains. “Pain doesn’t have an ethnicity at all.” JUGGLING JOBS Two months after the launch, Ms. Sandy has been able to balance her work for Mr. Meeks with her new publishing duties. She says, “I get to work on the political aspect, and then the spiritual and self-help aspect.” FUTURE FEATURES Ms. Sandy will publish a book of church humor stories this fall and is planning a volume aimed at younger women. —adrianne pasquarelli EXPERT OPINIONS HOW CAN I ENHANCE MY SEDER? buck ennis most families have two BY MATTHEW FLAMM seders for Passover.
