  • On December 31, 1999,Yeltsin's Russia Became Putin's Russia
PROLOGUE n December 31, 1999,Yeltsin’s Russia became Putin’s Russia. Boris Yeltsin—a political maverick who until the end tried to Oplay the mutually exclusive roles of democrat and tsar, who made revolutionary frenzy and turmoil his way of survival—unexpect- edly left the Kremlin and handed over power, like a New Year’s gift, to Vladimir Putin, an unknown former intelligence officer who had hardly ever dreamed of becoming a Russian leader. Yeltsin—tired and sick, disoriented and having lost his stamina— apparently understood that he could no longer keep power in his fist. It was a painful and dramatic decision for a politician for whom nonstop struggle for power and domination was the substance of life and his main ambition. His failing health and numerous heart attacks, however, were not the main reasons behind his unexpected resignation. The moment came when Yeltsin could not control the situation much longer and—more important—he did not know how to deal with the new challenges Russia was facing. He had been accustomed to making breakthroughs, to defeating his enemies, to overcoming obstacles. He was not prepared for state building, for the effort of everyday governance, for consensus making, for knitting a new national unity. By nature he was a terminator, not a transformational leader. It was time for him to gra- ciously bow out and hand over power to his successor. And Russia had to live through a time of real suspense while the Kremlin was preparing the transfer of power. The new Russian leader Vladimir Putin has become a symbol of a staggering mix of continuity and change.

  • Sofia Ready for Intriguing Short Track World Championships
March 6, 2019 Sofia, Bulgaria Sofia ready for intriguing Short Track World Championships The ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships – the biggest event on the sport’s calendar – take place at the Arena Armeec, Sofia, Bulgaria, from March 8 to 10. It promises to be a riveting conclusion to a season in which much dynamic new talent has emerged and the greatness of others been confirmed. At the start of the ISU World Cup Short Track season many fans wondered whether the Republic of Korea’s grip on the sport’s top prizes would continue, following an Olympic Games in which challenges from the Netherlands, China, Canada, Poland, Hungary and Italy threatened to break their dominance. The answer has been both yes and no. In the Men’s competition, Korea completed a clean sweep of winners in the individual World Cup classifications, while in the Ladies’ overall, Europeans reigned supreme. Suzanne Schulting has been the standout skater from either gender. In a sport with as many variables as Short Track, she’s been about as dominant during 2018-19as it is possible to be. The Dutch ace owned the 1000m, winning four of seven possible World Cup gold medals to claim the overall title by a mile. She also came out on top in the 1500m overall competition, after winning in both Calgary and Torino. It’ll be surprising if she doesn’t grab top slot in one distance – or both – in Sofia. The 1500m feels like the race where Schulting is more vulnerable. Second in the overall World Cup standings was Kim Ji Yoo (KOR), who has hit form recently and won the 1500m in impressive style in Dresden.

HISTORY EDUCATION REFORM IN POST-COMMUNIST POLAND, 1989-1999: HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY EFFECTS ON EDUCATIONAL TRANSITION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Christine S. Parker, M.A. ******* The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Antoinette Errante, Adviser Robert Lawson Adviser College of Education Steven Miller Department of Educational Policy & Leadership Copyright by Christine S. Parker 2003 ABSTRACT This dissertation will describe and analyze how state officials, educators, publishers, and historians in Poland have addressed the task of reforming its national curriculum standards and supporting textbooks in the period of transition from the end of Communist rule in 1989 to the introduction of a new system of education in 1999. The goals of this study are to determine (1) the sources of transitional curriculum policies in history education and the role of reform actors in Poland since 1989; (2) why the history education curriculum reforms changed as they did between the creation of proposals and the eventual codification of the reform into law; (3) the influences on the reform of history textbooks during the transitional period; (4) the differences between anticipated goals and actual outcomes of the curricular and textbook reforms, and (5) how to account for those changes in light of the greater scope of the historical development of democratic education in Poland. This grounded study is based on multiple data sources, including documentary evidence, professional journals, and personal interviews with individuals participating in the reform of the history curriculum.
