Sassenach Society Scoop Volume 102 July 2016 Sassenach Society Scoop Facebook Group: Sassenach Society of South Jersey SSOSJ Twitter: @SassenachJersey Website: www.SSOSJ.com (coming soon) EMAIL: [email protected] Editors: Celeste Amundsen (@hal12362) & Christine Gordon(@SASSENACHSJ) Interview:”Ask Scott kyle” Ross on Outlander by: Christine Gordon Recently Sassenach Society of South Jersey had the great pleasure to “Ask Scott Kyle” some questions. Scott is an actor, producer, and manager of the Bathgate Regal Theater. Most re- cently Scott appeared as Ross in Season Two of Starz hit show “Outlander.” Christine asked: What’s your involvement with Regal Theater? Have you done period act- ing before Outlander? Scott: I’m the Artistic Director & Venue Manager working on a full-time basis, I am fortunate enough to have the support of the Trustees to work on occasional acting projects. The thea- tre is very much my passion and it gives me a chance to create opportunities for other per- formers, which is very important to me. I love performing on stage and most of my career has been on stage, however as I have got older I seem to be drifting more and more towards film and television. Cheryl asked: Did you do anything in particular to get prepared for your role as Ross? Scott: I watched the whole of season 1 as well as listening to the audio books, I also worked with the dialect coach on Outlander Carol Ann Crawford to dub down my Glaswegian accent. Carole asked: What are your next projects? Scott: Busy working at the theatre at the moment and preparing for our Christmas season, I have had auditions for a few new projects but as of yet no offers have come in. Celeste asked: Have you read the Outlander books? Scott: I listened to the audio books up to Dragonfly in Amber, but haven’t got any further than that. V o l u m e 1 0 2 P a g e 3 Interview: "Ask Scott kyle” Ross on Outlander — C o n t ’ d Martha asked: Can you let us know a little about your acting background? Scott: I attended The City of Glasgow College where I studied Acting and Performance (NQ, HNC, HND). During my studies I received a number of awards for my entrepreneurial skills. After graduating from college I went on to establish NLP Theatre Company. NLP’s first production “Singin I’m No A Billy, He’s a Tim” by Des Dillon was a critically acclaimed show ("Scottish Theatre's greatest success story of recent times." - Alan Chadwick - STV Entertainment) and a commercial success, grossing over £2 million at the box office. Over 75% of the people who came to see the show had never been to the theatre before. This was my aim to encourage hard to reach audiences to visit the theatre. I appeared in the production as Billy, and received the "Best Actor Award" at The Stage Awards for Acting Excellence in 2010 (Edinburgh Festival ). In 2013 I formed the Regal Rep Company in association with NLP Theatre which presented a new piece of work “How To Make a Killing in Bollywood” at the Edinburgh Festival. It grossed over £20,000 in ticket sales at the Gilded Balloon, receiving excellent 4 and 5 star reviews. The show was selected by BBC Scotland, Radio 2 and BBC Asian Network as one of the “Highlights of the Fringe”, and the cast were invited to perform in the BBC events tent to an invitation only audience of 400. In 2014 this show continued to tour through the whole of the UK. Recently played the part of Cpl Stu Pearson in the feature film “Kajaki The True Story” KILO TWO BRAVO in the US. This film was produced by Oscar winning producer Gareth-Ellis Unwin (The King’s Speech) and Pukka Films. Kajaki is a British War Film based on actual events during the Afghan War. It was released in cinemas on 28th November 2014, and received a BAFTA nomination for "Outstanding Debute by a British Writer, Director or Producer" at the 2015 BAFTAS. Carrie asked: How many days did it take to film your Outlander sequences? Scott: It takes 2 weeks to film and episode and I was on set for 12 weeks (The mathematicians amongst you are smiling shh not a word). Some weeks I was only needed for two days and that meant that I filmed on my days off and went to work at the theatre the other 5. Carrie asked: What do you think of the Outlander "fandom"? Scott: To be honest the fact that anyone was interested in me and my part was the biggest surprise. One of the best things about the support has been the support given to the Regal Community Theatre, we have had donations from all over the world and that means that people are really supporting me and the other artists and volunteers at the theatre. Bathgate Regal Theater is a community led venue in the heart of Bathgate. They are proud to provide exciting programs of film, music, theater, comedy and children’s events. The theater first opened in 1938 as the Regal Picture House. Their vision is to provide a vibrant local theater contributing to the social, cultural and economic wealth of the community. Please consider donating to support this wonderful community theater: Donations Link: http://www.bathgateregal.org/fundraising.php Claire’s Reflection by Marianne Sarcone Claire’s Reflection When I sit and think of the time we shared and every moment that he cared Sometimes it seems like it's all a dream A marriage made up of Highlands and schemes The Prince, the Comte and Jack Randall too Who certainly bit off more than they could chew With feelings of hatred and plots to construe The faith of Culloden was sure to come true We found our way from day to day With Murtagh’s help in every way For all we accomplished and all that had failed I feel in my heart that I truly had bailed! The pain and the sadness of leaving his side The pride that I carried of being his bride With the deepest love a heart can feel I know what we had...was forever real I miss his heart, his hands, his face, I miss his loving warm embrace I see his initial that I trace Within my heart will not erase Our child that I carry will be just like him I know in my heart, it's not just a whim I'll pray for his red hair and fine features too Our baby will be perfect, this will be true I'll look to the future and back in time And know that my Jamie Will always be mine With "Faith", hope and charity, it's in his arms...I long to be. BEATS BY BRIAN WELSH SYNOPSIS 1994, a small town in central Scotland. Best mates Johnno and Spanner share a deep bond. Now on the cusp of adulthood, life is destined to take them in different directions – Johnno’s family are moving him to a new town and a better life, leaving Spanner behind to face a precarious future. But this summer is going to be different for them, and for the country. The explosion of the free party scene and the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history is happening across the UK. In pursuit of adventure and escape, the boys head out on one last night together to an illegal rave. Stealing cash from Spanner’s older brother, under the hazy stewardship of pirate radio DJ D-Man, the boys journey into an underworld of anarchy, freedom and a full-on collision with the forces of law and order. A universal coming of age story, set to a soundtrack as eclectic and electrifying as the scene it gave birth to, BEATS is a story for our time – of friendship, rebellion and the irresistible power of gathered youth. DIRECTOR: Brian Welsh PRODUCER: Camilla Bray EXEC. PRODUCER: Steven Soderbergh SCREENPLAY: Kieran Hurley, Brian Welsh MUSIC: JD Twitch (Optimo) CAST: Cristian Ortega, Lorn Macdonald, Laura Fraser Q&A WITH BRIAN WELSH How did you come to be involved with BEATS, which is based on Kieran Hurley’s 2012 play of the same name? A friend said, “You have to see this show playing at the Bush Theatre in London – it’s about you growing up.” When I read the synopsis of BEATS – this story about a 15-year-old boy going to a rave at the time the Criminal Justice Act was introduced – I grabbed a ticket and went along.

There is currently a competition underway for genetics labs to enter – winning applications will receive support for whole genome sequencing, RZSS have entered. The ‘Newtonmore’ cat, which had a low pelage score of 11, was also confirmed to have not met the genetic wildcat threshold. Sarah Robinson announced that she was leaving the RZSS before Christmas and moving to a new job. The Chair and members wished her well, and thanked her for her significant contribution to the wildcat work. AGENDA ITEM 3 + 4 – PRIORITY AREAS PROJECT UPDATE + COMMS UPDATE See Annex 3 for a full report. Efforts are being made to ensure the winter fieldwork is more achievable and realistic for project staff. Two Landrovers have been sourced for fieldwork (previously used for SNH goose management work).
