By way of this examination, literary changes over time become readable, highlighting the speed at which the rhetoric and aims of many immigration narratives became patently anti-America in the twenty- first century, significantly departing from the traditions established in the twentieth century, which, at their core still held pro-America aims. The first chapter, “The Solution is the Problem: Immigrant Narratives of Internment and Detention,” considers nonfiction narratives regarding immigration detention within the borders of the United States.

  • Interplanetary Border Imaginaries in Upside Down: Divisions and Connections in the American Continent
Interplanetary Border Imaginaries in Upside Down: Divisions and Connections in the American Continent PABLO GÓMEZ MUÑOZ The science fiction film genre, which portrays imaginary, alternative worlds, often draws on the present environment to speculate on the future. Upside Down (dir. Juan Solanas, 2012) makes this premise evident by depicting a futuristic dystopian universe where borders organize space, people, and social relations. Despite the abundance of social discourses on globalization and extensive interconnectedness, Juan Solanas’s film evinces that borders and boundaries still structure contemporary societies. This article focuses on Solanas’s film because of its particularly complex articulation of an alternative world in powerful combination with the phenomenon of transnational love. To briefly summarize, Upside Down portrays two twin planets (Up Top and Down Below) that resemble the United States and Latin America respectively. While Up Top looks like a modern city full of skyscrapers, Down Below resembles a poor city in ruins. The two worlds are located on top of each other and each of them has a different gravity.1 Even though the planets are separated, there are three points of contact: the Sage Mountains, a skyscraper that connects both worlds, and a café. Yet heavily policed borders prevent citizens on one planet from contacting people on the other. Adam (Jim Sturgess) and Eden (Kirsten Dunst), who are from Down Below and from Up Top respectively, meet at the Sage Mountains. They lose touch for a few years but eventually find each other and strive to build a relationship. My analysis of Upside Down revolves around the science fiction film genre, borders, and transnational interactions and relationships.

JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES – VOLUME 16 (2018), 165-183. http://doi.org/10.18172/jes.3523 BORDERS AND COSMOPOLITANISM IN THE GLOBAL CITY: LONDON RIVER ANA VIRGINIA LÓPEZ FUENTES Universidad de Zaragoza [email protected] ABSTRACT. This article explores the representation of borders and cosmopolitanism in the city of London in London River, a film about two parents looking for their children in global city after the 7th of July of 2005 terrorist attacks. As will be argued, different spaces in the city work simultaneously as dividing lines and as borderlands, emphasising the dual nature of borders theorized by border scholars such as Gloria Anzaldúa (1999), Mike Davis (2000) and Anthony Cooper and Christopher Rumford (2011). Elijah Anderson’s (2011) concept of cosmopolitan canopy and Gerard Delanty’s (2006) moments of openness will be used to analyse the articulation of cosmopolitanism in the different constructed spaces displayed in the film. Keywords: Film studies, London River, cosmopolitanism, borders, borderlands, global cities. 165 Journal of English Studies, vol.

14 October 2019 The Honorable Frank Pallone, Chairman The Honorable Greg Walden, Ranking Member House Committee on Energy and Commerce 2125 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Dear Chairman Pallone, Ranking Member Walden, and Members of the Committee: Thank you for holding the Oct. 16, 2019 hearing on the online liability protections in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. CreativeFuture is a nonprofit coalition of more than 550 companies and organizations and more than 230,000 individuals from film, television, music, book publishing, photography, and other creative industries. We respectfully request that you include in the record of the hearing this cover letter and the attached documents. The internet is an extraordinary tool. It enables our members – as well as anyone and everyone around the world – to create content and reach audiences like never before. Unfortunately, a lack of accountability on the part of social media companies and online intermediaries is also facilitating piracy of a scale and scope like never before. That piracy and lack of accountability is jeopardizing the ability of creatives to fund and produce their art, and to earn a living. It also jeopardizes the 5.7 million U.S. jobs and $1.3 trillion in GDP that the core copyright industries bring to the U.S. economy. We are therefore grateful to see that not just this Committee, but all of Congress, is carefully examining whether social media companies and online intermediaries are living up to Congress’ expectations in exchange for the liability limitations they enjoy from Section 230, and in Section 512 of the Copyright Act.

  • Cinema from the Border, Cinema As Border: Creation, Subversion, and Deconstruction of Latino Stereotypes in Border Crossing Films
CINEMA FROM THE BORDER, CINEMA AS BORDER: CREATION, SUBVERSION, AND DECONSTRUCTION OF LATINO STEREOTYPES IN BORDER CROSSING FILMS By MICHAEL TADEUSZ DABROWSKI Integrated Studies Final Project Essay (MAIS 700) submitted to Dr. Mike Guismondi in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts – Integrated Studies Athabasca, Alberta August, 2013 ABSTRACT A trajectory of movies dealing with the border migrations on the U.S./Mexico frontier starting with El Norte in 1983, with a focus on the last decade is examined in relation to how it reinforces or subverts existing Latino stereotypes. The dialectic between cinema and North American society’s treatment of Latinos is explored through the use or undermining of their images on the screen. The staging of the border crossing, border police, and Latino gender roles is examined in select movies as it is utilized to challenge expected norms. Emphasis is placed on La misma luna and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada as both these films provide extensive subversive elements which showcase how film can be used to alter our stereotypical notions of immigrants who have been marginalized. We explore the ways in which film embraces the world that it originates from, shaping and challenging the social and cultural mosaic emerging in the U.S./Mexico border region where Latino presence is on the upswing.
