NY ACKER Awards Is Taken from an Archaic Dutch Word Meaning a Noticeable Movement in a Stream
1 THE NYC ACKER AWARDS CREATOR & PRODUCER CLAYTON PATTERSON This is our 6th successful year of the ACKER Awards. The meaning of ACKER in the NY ACKER Awards is taken from an archaic Dutch word meaning a noticeable movement in a stream. The stream is the mainstream and the noticeable movement is the avant grade. By documenting my community, on an almost daily base, I have come to understand that gentrification is much more than the changing face of real estate and forced population migrations. The influence of gen- trification can be seen in where we live and work, how we shop, bank, communicate, travel, law enforcement, doctor visits, etc. We will look back and realize that the impact of gentrification on our society is as powerful a force as the industrial revolution was. I witness the demise and obliteration of just about all of the recogniz- able parts of my community, including so much of our history. I be- lieve if we do not save our own history, then who will. The NY ACKERS are one part of a much larger vision and ambition. A vision and ambition that is not about me but it is about community. Our community. Our history. The history of the Individuals, the Outsid- ers, the Outlaws, the Misfits, the Radicals, the Visionaries, the Dream- ers, the contributors, those who provided spaces and venues which allowed creativity to flourish, wrote about, talked about, inspired, mentored the creative spirit, and those who gave much, but have not been, for whatever reason, recognized by the mainstream. -

Alt-Nation: Jesse Malin Talks Life As an Outsider in Preparation for His CD Release Show @ Firehouse 13
Alt-Nation: Jesse Malin Talks Life as an Outsider in preparation for his CD Release Show @ Firehouse 13 After a gap of nearly five years between releases, 2015 has been a whirlwind for Jesse Malin. In March, the D Generation singer released the soul stirring New York Before The War (One Little Indian / Velvet Elk Records), in April he put out a both a solo EP and comeback single with his old band D Generation for Record Store Day, and now he comes to Providence this Friday to celebrate the release of another solo album called Outsiders (One Little Indian / Velvet Elk Records). Check out www.motifri.com for an online review on the Outsiders but for now, l decided to call up Malin to get the skinny on the travels of his PMA brigade, new tunes with old friends and life on the outside. Marc Clarkin (Motif): Were the tunes on Outsiders all written at the same time as New York Before The War? Jesse Malin: Some a little bit before and some just a bit after. Actually you know it’s five years between records and I’ll never do that again. Love It To Life in 2010, New York Before The War in March, and now Outsiders. It’s like wow, the music business has gone crazy and you can do whatever you want! Let’s put out two records in one year, who cares! I’ve got two records that I really love, but it was also five years in between. I did a lot and could have probably had three records. -

JESSE MALIN :: Sunset Kids Wicked Cool Records SUNSET KIDS ARRIVES FRIDAY, AUGUST 30 VIA WICKED COOL/THE ORCHARD/VELVET ELK (Photo Credit: Olivia Jaffe) The upcoming tour celebrates Malin’s hugely anticipated new album, SUNSET KIDS, due Friday, August 30 via Wicked Cool/The Orchard/Velvet Elk; pre-orders are available now HERE. Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Lucinda Williams and engineered by the late David Bianco (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, AC/DC) and Geoff Sanoff (Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul, Fountains of Wayne), the album is heralded by the stellar first single, “Room 13 (Feat. Lucinda Williams),” streaming now HERE. The track – one of two songs on SUNSET KIDS co-written by Williams – had its exclusive world premiere via Rolling Stone, which simply raved, “With jangly guitars and a moody vibe, ‘Room 13’ is peak Malin.” SUNSET KIDS – which marks Malin’s first new LP since 2015’s OUTSIDERS – further includes the remarkable Malin/Williams duet, “Dead On,” along with guest appearances from Joseph Arthur on three tracks and newly arranged versions of songs from his classic 2010 LP with the St. Marks Social, LOVE IT TO LIFE. Additional highlights include “Strangers and Thieves” co-written by and featuring vocals from Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong. Hailed by the Times of London for “(writing) vivid songs with killer tunes and (singing) them with scary conviction,” Malin first met Williams in the early 2000s at a jazz club in NYC’s West Village. A fast friendship ensued, though it wasn’t until 2017, when Williams invited Malin to Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl to see her open what would be the final Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers concert, that talk of her producing the album first took shape. -
Alt-Nation: Shows to Put a Spring in Your Step,Alt-Nation: Pixels’
Alt-Nation: WBRU Rock Hunt It’s that time again — the finals of this year’s WBRU Rock Hunt take over The Met Café this Saturday night. The great thing about the WBRU Rock Hunt is every year is completely different. Sure, there are some years where there is an obvious favorite, but this year it’s wide open! Last year’s champs, Public Alley, came from out of nowhere to stun favorites Most Dangerous Men Alive and Forest Fires for the victory. This only goes to show that one can crunch the numbers and factor in a band’s draw all day, but come show time there is no sure bet when it comes to picking the WBRU Rock Hunt Champion. In the old days when the event was at the now defect Giza in Olneyville, one could make prop bets on the street with the guy trying to sell you the hub caps he stole off the guy parked in front of you. These days finding trouble isn’t so easy, but where there is money to made, all things are possible. Things to consider when placing a bet is sometimes bands will do ill-advised things to take them out of the running. Some examples in recent years include Baylock thinking the world really wanted to hear them do a mid-set stripped down triple bongo number or even last year when Most Dangerous Men Alive performed a Rage Against the Machine cover that was void of all the energy and passion of the original. The best thing for a band competing in the Rock Hunt is to recognize what they are good at it and stick to that.
