Jack Weiss is the only Democrat and the only Environmentalist Running for LA City Attorney. Jack Weiss is a lifelong Democrat – Throughout his service as a federal prosecutor and City Councilmember Jack Weiss has stood for Democratic values - for civil rights, women’s rights, LGBT rights, immigrants' rights and the rights of working families and children. In 2008 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. An early supporter of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Jack Weiss has been an ally and partner to the Mayor in public safety, educational, and quality of life improvements for the City. Jack Weiss is a proud Democrat who is a founding member of the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, and a member of the Westside Urban Forum, Heal the Bay, and Los Angeles County Young Democrats, in addition to serving on many local bodies and bar committees. Jack Weiss was an early and strong supporter of Measure R which provides funding for a subway to the sea, and a more overall efficient public transit system for LA. He has fought for improvements for transit users including the Orange Line and Expo Line both to reduce traffic and fight air pollution. ∗ Jack Weiss has fought for public education – He has supported schools throughout his district by improving safety for kids around campuses, providing funds to help parent/teacher organizations, and assisting schools to upgrade their libraries and facilities to help students learn. ∗ Jack Weiss stopped the city from fighting environmentalists in court. As a result, the City is now reducing the trash flowing into the Los Angeles River to prevent pollution of the ocean. ∗ Jack Weiss is Greening Century City with a plan to encourage pedestrians and use of transit. The plan includes the site for a future subway stop and a shuttle to make transit a more viable option for more drivers. He was a strong supporter of Prop R to improve transit in the region. ∗ Jack Weiss received the Award for Public Service from the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters for his leadership on environmental issues. He is President of the Santa Monica Bay Watershed Council and served four years as chair of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission. ∗ Jack Weiss is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, who served in the public corruption section of the U.S. Attorney’s office in Los Angeles. He specialized in prosecuting corruption, civil rights and violent crime cases. ∗ Jack Weiss earned his Law Degree at UCLA, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the UCLA Law Review. He was an Honors graduate at Princeton University, Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs. ∗ Jack Weiss received the Humanitarian Award from the LA Commission on Assaults Against Women and was honored by the LA County Sexual Assault Coordinating Council for his leadership in reforming how DNA is used to catch and prosecute rapists. ∗ As Chair of the L.A. City Council Public Safety Committee, Jack Weiss wrote “Preparing Los Angeles for Terrorism -- a 10-Point Plan” a comprehensive plan to ensure that the City’s firefighters, police, and residents are able to respond to any type of disaster including an earthquake, fire, or other large scale emergency. Money and Power in the City of Angels Money and Power in the City of Angels Twenty years have passed since voters modifi ed Los Angeles’ campaign fi nance laws to regulate money in municipal elections. Those reforms successfully reduced candidate dependence on large organizational contributions, but lobbyists and special interests have found ways around those reforms and continue to fl ood the system with contributions and independent expenditures. • Organizations and special interests provide candidates and elected offi cials with unlimited amounts of money by contributing to ballot measure committees that the candidates and offi cials control. Between 2006 and 2009, three Los Angeles municipal offi ce holders raised almost $10 million for such committees, with some contributions as large as $500,000. • Special interest use of independent expenditures has also skyrocketed. In 2009, labor unions spent almost $800,000 or 45% of all independent expenditures in municipal races. Page 4 November 2010 COUNCILMEMBER PAUL KORETZ LEADS EFFORT TO SAVE MULHOLLAND DRIVE VIEW PARCEL Speaking on the recent success of purchasing the key parcel of land at the junction of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, City Councilmember Paul Koretz highlighted the powerful visual value of the property and the importance he placed on protecting it from development. A long-time advocate of both environmental issues and the preservation of historic space, Koretz explained his position, "I have always been a supporter of environmental issues both when I was in the State Assembly and now back here in Los Angeles. My goals are to preserve the Mulholland property and the Century Plaza Hotel." During his term in the State Assembly, Koretz was instrumental in bringing about the preservation of Briar Summit. This transaction helped the Mountains Recreation Authority (MRCA) obtain 77 lots on Beverly Glen Boulevard, all of which went to enhance the natural environment and maintain the ecological balance of the Santa Monica Mountains. Attempts to preserve the Laurel Canyon/Mulholland property started many years ago when Joel Wachs was the councilmember for that area. Wachs worked diligently on the effort as did prior Councilmember Jack Weiss; however, it took the confluence of several events and the actions of Koretz to finally bring the purchase to fruition. Over the past decade in Los Angeles, as in many cities across the United States, ethnic activists and businesses have lobbied local governments for official designations that publicly acknowledge their presence in a neighborhood. Yet ethnic place names have been adopted predominantly in neighborhoods where Latinos represent a majority. Street and freeway signs throughout the city promote the public identity of places such as Thai Town, Little Ethiopia, and Little Armenia, neighborhoods in which the ‘official’ immigrant community is in the minority. ii Employing comparative historical and ethnographic methods, I find that demographic changes initiated by immigration reform and the social movements of the 1960’s have established a new ‘collective act’ responsible for shaping the public identity of ethnic spaces in Los Angeles.
