Abstract The one great blessing that the unification of India through the British rule had brought about was the rise and growth of a sense of national unity, however vague and uncertain it might have been in the initial stages; and this conception was strengthened by the work of reform bodies like the Brahmo Samaj, Ramakrishna Mission ( established by Swami Vivekananda), the Prarthana Samaj in Bombay (1867), the Arya Samaj in the Punjab (1875), the Theosophical Society in Madras (1882), and the Sarvajanik Sabha of Poona. Most of these movements aimed of course at the eradication of social abuses and unhealthy developments in religious practices. But this renaissance, especially in India where every aspect of life is infused by religious and moral purposes, was bound to lead to efforts at improvement in the political field also. The political revival of the Maratha and Sikh powers was preceded by religious movements, rousing the people to new endeavour. The press and the new literature that grew up in the years previous to 1885 also indicated the disaffection that was steadily growing among the people. Haveri district along with Gadag district was earlier part of undivided Dharwad district. Owing to the demands of the people Haveri district was carved out of old Dharwad district and was formed on 24.08.1997.

In the State of Karnataka, the Karnataka Goods and Service Tax Act, 2017(Karnataka Act 27 of 2017) is in force. In order to verify whether the taxable persons have accounted the turnovers in their books of accounts, to prevent the evasion of tax on goods and services, to take up inspections of the business premises of taxable persons, conduct test purchases, checking of goods vehicles, checking of stocks, physical verification, to confiscate goods vehicles and goods and to enforce other statutory functions is necessary in the interest of collection of revenue under the Karnataka Goods and Service Act 2017 by all officers working in the Enforcement and Vigilance divisions in the State. Therefore, it is essential to assign the geographical jurisdiction and statutory powers to all the officers working in the Enforcement and Vigilance Divisions of the Department. 2. Accordingly, all pending cases of inspection of business premises under the presently repealed Acts prior to the introduction of Goods and Service Tax Act, 2017, by the enforcement and vigilance wing are required to be finalized exercising the powers provided under section 174 of the Karnataka Goods and Services Tax Act 2017.

The analysis starts with the brief profile of Haveri district. The Haveri district was formed in the year 2001 by dividing the earlier Dharwad district into Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag districts. The Haveri district is located between north latitudes 140 17’ 02” to 150 15’ 01” and east longitudes 7500’35” to 75049’23” falling in the survey of India Toposheet Nos-48M/4, 48 M/8, 48M/12, 48N/1, 48N/2, 48N/5, 48N/6, 48N/7, 48N/9, 48N/10, 48N/11, 48N/13, 48N/14, and 48N/15. Haveri is a district in the state of Karnataka, India with the potential to become a tourist hub. As of 2001, it had a population of 1,439,116 of which 20.78% were urban residents. Haveri District is exactly in the centre of Karnataka with equidistant from Bidar in the far north to Kollegal in the far south. The district consists of seven taluks namely Hanagal, Shiggaon, Savanur, Haveri, Byadagi, Hirekerur, and Ranebennur. It is bounded by Dharwad district on the north, by Gadag district in the northeast, by Bellary district on the east, by Davangere district on the south, by Shimoga district in the southwest and by Uttar Kannada on the west and northwest.

    GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES CENTRAL GROUND WATER BOARD GROUND WATER INFORMATION BOOKLET GADAG DISTRICT, KARNATAKA SOUTH WESTERN REGION BANGALORE JANUARY 2009 FOREWORD Ground water contributes to about eighty percent of the drinking water requirements in the rural areas, fifty percent of the urban water requirements and more than fifty percent of the irrigation requirements of the nation. Central Ground Water Board has decided to bring out district level ground water information booklets highlighting the ground water scenario, its resource potential, quality aspects, recharge – discharge relationship, etc., for all the districts of the country. As part of this, Central Ground Water Board, South Western Region, Bangalore, is preparing such booklets for all the 27 districts of Karnataka state, of which six of the districts fall under farmers’ distress category. The Gadag district Ground Water Information Booklet has been prepared based on the information available and data collected from various state and central government organisations by several hydro- scientists of Central Ground Water Board with utmost care and dedication. This booklet has been prepared by Shri K.N.Nagaraja, Scietist-D, under the guidance of Dr. K. Md. Najeeb, Superintending Hydrogeologist, Central Ground Water Board, South Western Region, Bangalore. The figures were prepared by S/Sri. H.P.Jayaprakash, Scientist-C and K.Rajarajan, Assistant Hydrogeologist. The efforts of Report processing section in finalising and bringing out the report in this format are commendable. I take this opportunity to congratulate them for the diligent and careful compilation and observation in the form of this booklet, which will certainly serve as a guiding document for further work and help the planners, administrators, hydrogeologists and engineers to plan the water resources management in a better way in the district.
