Contact information 32 2 INTRODUCTION Six species of seabirds breed on the Juan Fernández Archipelago: the pink-footed shearwater (Puffinus creatopus), Juan Fernández petrel (Pterodroma externa), Stejneger’s petrel (Pterodroma longirostris), Kermadec petrel (Pterodroma neglecta), white-bellied storm petrel (Fregetta grallaria), and Defilippe’s petrel (Pterodroma defilippiana). -

DISCUSSION OF THE FLORA OF GUADALUPE ISLAND Dr. Reid Moran1: Guadalupe Island lies about 250 miles south- southwest of San Diego, California, and about 160 miles off the peninsula of Baja California, Mexico. Volcanic in origin and sep arated from the peninsula by depths of about 12,000 feet, it is clearly an oceanic island. Among the vascular plants recorded from Guadalupe Island and its islets, apparently 164 species are native. Goats, introduced more than a century ago, have eliminated some species and re duced others nearly to extinction. Outer Islet, a goatless refugium two miles south of the main island, has a native florula of 36 species. Nine of these (including Euphorbia misera and Lavatera occidentalis) are very scarce on the main island, largely confined to cliffs inaccessible to goats; another one (Coreopsis gigantea) has not been collected there since 1875; and five others (includ ing Lavatera lindsayi, Dudleya guadalupensis, and Rhus integri¬ folia) have never been recorded from there. Although it is not known that these five ever did occur on the main island, presum ably they did but were exterminated by the goats. These five, comprising 14 per cent of the native florula of Outer Islet, give the only suggestion we have as to how many species must have been eliminated from the main island by the goats before they could be found by botanists. Also reported from Guadalupe Island are 42 species that prob ably are not native. Several of these, each found only once, ap parently have not persisted; but, with the severe reduction of many native plants by the goats, other introduced plants have become abundant. -

ERICKSON, LSA Associates, 20 Executive Park, Suite 200, Irvine, California 92614; [email protected] ABSTRACT: We report 56 bird specimens of 31 species taken on Isla Guadalupe, Baja California, between 1986 and 2004 and housed at the Colección Ornitológica del Laboratorio de Vertebrados de la Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Ensenada, along with other sight and specimen records. The speci- mens include the first published Guadalupe records for 10 species: the Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris), Long-billed Curlew (Numenius americanus), Bonaparte’s Gull (Larus philadelphia), Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens), Warbling Vireo (Vireo gilvus), Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor), Yellow Warbler (Dendroica petechia), Magnolia Warbler (Dendroica magnolia), Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xan- thocephalus xanthocephalus), and Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius). A specimen of the eastern subspecies of Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater ater) and a sight record of the Gray-cheeked Thrush (Catharus minimus) are the first reported from the Baja California Peninsula (and islands). A photographed Franklin’s Gull (Larus pipixcan) is also an island first. Currently 136 native species and three species intro- duced in North America have been recorded from the island and nearby waters. -

Behavioural Responses of White Sharks to Specific Baits During Cage

Hoyos‑Padilla2,3*, Primo Micarelli4, Felipe Galván‑Magaña1 & Emilio Sperone5 This study describes the efect of diferent baits on the attraction, surface behaviour and conditioning of white sharks Carcharodon carcharias during local ecotourism activities. The sightings, behaviours, and pictures used for photographic identifcation were obtained during August to November 2012– 2014 onboard tourist boats in Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Four types of baits were used: (1) frozen bait; (2) frozen bait and natural chum; (3) fresh fsh bait; and (4) mackerel bags. Data were analysed according to sex, maturity and the total of sharks using 6,145 sightings of 121 white sharks. The type of bait showed no signifcant diference on the efectiveness to attracting sharks. Ethological analysis showed that the type of bait had a signifcant efect on the shark’s surface behaviour during its interactions with boats. Natural chum and fresh baits showed short term behavioural patterns constituted by increased number of violent interactions with the bait, while the frozen bait did not generate a defned behavioural pattern. Conditioning of white sharks was determined by the number of interactions and the consumption frequency of the bait. Fifty nine percent of sharks (n = 41) showed no conditioning, 36% (n = 25) showed a low risk and only 5% (n = 3) were found to have a high risk of conditioning. The results suggest that current ecotourism has no efect on the conditioning of the white sharks, and that all baits have a similar efectiveness for attracting the sharks. -

Deméré1 and Annalisa Berta2 New crania, dentitions, and postcrania of the fossil otariid Thalassoleon mexicanus are described from the latest Miocene–early Pliocene Capistrano Formation of southern California. Previous morphological evidence for age variation and sexual dimorphism in this taxon is confirmed. Analysis of the dentition and postcrania of Thalassoleon mexicanus provides evidence of adaptations for pierce feeding, ambulatory terrestrial locomotion, and forelimb swimming in this basal otariid pinniped. Cladistic analysis supports recognition of Thalassoleon as monophyletic and distinct from other basal otariids (i.e., Pithanotaria, Hydrarctos, and Callorhinus). Re-evaluation of the status of Thalassoleon supports recognition of two species, Thalassoleon mexicanus and Thalassoleon macnallyae, distributed in the eastern North Pacific. Recognition of a third species, Thalassoleon inouei from the western North Pacific, is questioned.
