Busch, driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota for JGR, would like nothing more than to repeat his Auto Club 400 victory from last March, which happened to be his 200th career victory in NASCAR’s top three series and 54th in the Cup Series. He’s since lifted those totals to 209 overall and 57 in the Cup Series. Meanwhile, the first two races of 2020 have not gone to plan for the 2019 Cup Series champion. An engine issue in the season-opening Daytona 500 and handling issues last weekend at his hometown Las Vegas Motor Speedway have been the culprits.

An event study proposal by Meredith Seurkamp This paper investigates the costs and benefits of NASCAR sponsorship. Sports sponsorship is increasing in popularity as marketers attempt to build more personal relationships with their consumers. These sponsorships range from athlete endorsements to the sponsorship of an event or physical venue. These types of sponsorships have a number of costs and benefits, as reviewed in this paper, and the individual firm must use its discretion whether sports sponsorship coincides with its marketing goals. NASCAR, a sport that has experienced a recent boom in popularity, is one of the most lucrative sponsorship venues in professional sports. NASCAR, which began as a single race in 1936, now claims seventy-five million fans and over one hundred FORTUNE 500 companies as sponsors. NASCAR offers a wide variety of sponsorship opportunities, such as driver sponsorship, event sponsorship, track signage, and a number of other options. This paper investigates the fan base at which these marketing messages are directed. Research of NASCAR fans indicates that these fans are typically more brand loyal than the average consumer. NASCAR fans exhibit particular loyalty to NASCAR sponsors that financially support the auto racing sport.     MIKE SHIPLETT: Crew Chief, No. 41 Ford Mustang Birthdate: May 17, 1972 Birthplace: Amherst, Ohio Hometown: Amherst, Ohio Residence: Denver, North Carolina Spouse: Brooke When Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) promoted Cole Custer from its NASCAR Xfinity Series team to its flagship NASCAR Cup Series program for 2020, crew chief Mike Shiplett earned a promotion too. Shiplett has been a crew chief for more than 300 races across the Xfinity Series and Cup Series, and it was his 2019 season with Custer that proved to be his most productive. In Shiplett’s first year at SHR, he guided Custer to a career-high seven wins and six poles, with 17 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes and a total of 922 laps led. It was a breakout year for Custer, who entered 2019 after consecutive single-win seasons in 2017 and 2018. Shiplett came to SHR from Chip Ganassi Racing, where in 2018 he earned six Xfinity Series wins, steering Kyle Larson to four victories and a win apiece for Ross Chastain and John Hunter Nemechek. It was a standout year for the veteran crew chief, but it ended up being short lived when Ganassi’s Xfinity Series team was unexpectedly shut down before 2019 even began. But as the door to Ganassi closed, another opened at SHR, whereupon Shiplett’s pairing with Custer delivered almost immediately. The duo scored the first of their seven victories in just the third race of the season at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Shiplett, now in his 12th year as a crew chief, built his racing career from the ground up.
